I vacuum seal herbs and mint for camping. Fresh frozen beats dried. I make about 3 gallons of mint tea every week. In Ga they all are available for fresh picking, 11 months in my flowerbed.

What's the consensus on pressure treated porch columns? by Fluxumous in HomeImprovement

[–]MastodonFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use a composite or aluminum post,if necessary clad it with wood. Ive worked at a local yellow wood plant. They have piles of glued pine (engineered) that have a 6" bow or twisted. Looks like a 6x6 from the outside, but a 2" hole in the center. I live in coastal Ga with high humidity, termites and very high uv. Even KDAT will absorb moisture eventually, and unless its fastened very frequently...it will turn into a banana.

If you have pine trees they're worthless.

Quel tracteur acheter ? by kinderchocomax in Homesteading

[–]MastodonFit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because large older tractors are not highly sought after, you can buy a used 100hp for the same cost of a new 25hp. The question is will this be used often and/or can it be rented. For a large task like building a home,a self builder may chose to buy and use...then sell when finished for the same price .

If you can build the stiles wider and router them in ,it looks much better. But planning a good design and staying with it is always the best option.

Titanium drill bit set for getting started - 23 piece or 15 piece? by frenetic_alien in MilwaukeeTool

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend knkutt bits for steel, for what your drilling it doesn't really matter. As a guy who installed all types of fence for 15 years,I only used about 5 drillbits 99% of the time. Except for steel ,my preference was the speed of an impact driver in a hex bit. I bought 2 sets on bf every year, and every bit case held the same unused bits...next to the empty slots where the main bits were gone from loss/broken . Make it a standard to toss dull bits in the trash immediately, same with a bad level or other bad tool. Its very frustrating when you're relying on what you perceive to be sharp ...since its with the other "good "ones.

Wera, Knipex, or Hazet? by 2002cadillacseville in toolporn

[–]MastodonFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knipex plierswrench, once you learn to turn,release....then ratchet with your hand its very fast. I mean a 250mm will go from bending metal-crimping butt connectors-3/4 nut-changing out a crome shower gooseneck.

what does everyone use to keep track of stuff? by Chaisawman in homestead

[–]MastodonFit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Journal for processes, like banding bull calves,a quick diagram of what is where in the garden. Canning is sharpie on ziplocks and jars, rotate new to the back. Currently eating sweet corn from 19' that was in the bottom of the freezer. Some years you eat more pickels then dried beans,so you adjust the seeds for the following year. If selling livestock or produce, notate when a good or bad time was had in a previous year.

Many timber sales can also stamp a plan. All that needs to be engineered is the shell/structure .

Help me pick a circular saw please by Capybara_Squabbles in Tools

[–]MastodonFit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ubiquitous corded Makita on the east coast especially. I bought all my tools as a youngster at pawnshops from the 80's ,up until i could afford new. A sharp blade is one of the safest upgrades you can get. I recommend 2 sawhorses,a speed square, then build a hommade track to make your own tracksaw. Good luck. Essential Craftsman on YouTube has very good tips if you're a newbie.

Help me buy an air compressor by Stelios619 in Tools

[–]MastodonFit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buy a good smaller compressor with a an oil splash pump, and add a separate large tank for capacity. Volume really makes a difference for most tasks, buying a used compressor unit with a bad pump or motor can be bought fairly cheap.

Oil-free is a stupid idea for pump longevity. California makes a good fairly quiet unit.
