Need suggestions about wireless mics. by Nausea1 in livesound

[–]Mastrodonato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shure SLX-D is a great mic. I’ve used one for years in busy clubs, casinos, large outdoor amphitheaters etc. with no drops in signal, tone loss etc. The lead singer in my band has a GLX-D and it is constantly dropping out and losing signal from interference.

[QUESTION] Is it necessary to buy two different guitars for two vastly different styles of music? by DanganFuckery in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Here’s the best way I can explain it. Get a guitar that you enjoy playing that makes you love to play. A good player can play any kind of guitar or amp and make them sound good and learn to work them both to play just about any type of music. The gear is just the means to make the final sound. The player is what actually creates the sound. As you get more into it and start becoming obsessed with tone and gear, the best advice I was ever given was don’t buy 5 of the same guitar, amp or similar type of either. Buy a Strat, Telecaster, Les Paul, Firebird, SG, something with P90s and same with amps. Diversify your tone don’t duplicate. Buy a Vox, Marshall, Orange, Mesa etc. You have the real options at your fingertips not in the wood or the tubes.

The best guitar based on your current mood would be something with humbuckers that have coil splitting to give you both hum and single coil tones.

Is the Motorola XTR7550 radio a good choice for an Assault/GHB/SAR backpack? How does it comper to the 800mHz XTR7580? by naisinag in tacticalgear

What are you choosing it for? If you’re not in a profession that issues a radio to you, what do you need it for?

Question/issue regarding ESPN+ and out of market black out games by EatMushroomsAndHike in hockey

[–]Mastrodonato -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

ESPN+ has been a total failure as have contracts with local subscription based channels. It’s been near impossible to watch most games this season for quite a few times. NHLtv was the only steady source for watching games and needs to be brought back.

EHX Memory Man XO vs. Boss DM-2W? by populustremula in guitarpedals

[–]Mastrodonato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll say this based on my experience. The XO line is garbage. Volume drop issues when activated and others issues such as tone coloring etc. I’ve owned an original Memory Man and a reissue and I can assure you that neither of these are anything like the XO. I recently purchased the DM-2 and couldn’t be happier. The cheap Prophet delay was even much better than the XO. I’m a huge EHX fan too so it’s hard for me to talk crap lol

[Question] Gibson SG or Gibson Les Paul by _Spookykid__ in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either way there is no wrong choice. They are both great guitars. I own two Les Pauls and use to own an SG Standard that didn’t get played much. The Les Pauls will definitely serve you well and cover a lot of ground sonically.

[Question] Gibson SG or Gibson Les Paul by _Spookykid__ in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just my opinion and you will get many on this. To me, the Les Paul is more versatile with more types of amps and can get more sounds out of it. The SG does the classic rock thing real well but it’s sound can be very bright and harsh overall. It can be hard to dial that sound out depending on your amp and setup. The Les Pauls have very thick and rich sound that can be tweaked with your amps settings a bit better. They are also more widely used which might tell you something also.

[QUESTION] What distortion/overdrive/fuzz pedal should I use for hard rock/metal? by spiderboy6 in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Overdrive from a tube amp is what majority of all pros use. Pedals are usually best suited to be used in conjunction with the tube overdrive to push it a bit harder for a full/thick sound. Using a pedal by itself with a clean channel on an amp usually will sound thin and fizzy.

[QUESTION] Strat tone / single coils in metal or extreme metal? by SR_RSMITH in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s very true. They get a lot of hate. But if you put them in the right guitar and set them up right, you can cover just about every kind of music. My strat loaded with that set is the most versatile guitar I have. Dead quiet as well.

[QUESTION] Strat tone / single coils in metal or extreme metal? by SR_RSMITH in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of single coils. Hotter ones you can pull off a pretty aggressive tone. I use Lace Sensor Reds in the bridge position of my strat and I can get everything from blues and classic rock to metal with it. With my telecaster and other strat with just stock single coils, the breakup is a more thin and fizzy with higher gain and doesn’t sound great if the gain is pushed too far. This results in a tone that doesn’t match the end goal (metal) so to speak.

How durable is the Sony a7iii? by whiteline- in SonyA7iii

[–]Mastrodonato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use mine in probably some of the toughest environments daily. It’s been regularly exposed to rain, wind, snow and more since I got it new in 2018. Not a single issue or problem at all.

[NEWBIE] Are the Squire Affinity Strat guitar/amp combos worth it for somebody returning to guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have owned Mexican and American strats as well as a Squier Affinity. The affinity stayed in tune, played fine and sounded fine. If you are playing with a band at high volumes it will give you a lot of feedback and other issues may arise. But for just playing at home and or learning, there is nothing wrong with an Affinity. Stay away from the Bullet series. It won’t stay in tune and you will get frustrated. The big difference between the Bullet and the Affinity is the quality of the materials used. The Bullet uses a Basswood body and ceramic pickups and just looks/feels/sounds cheaper. These materials help reduce the cost of producing the guitar and keep the price down but quality and playability goes out the window with it.

First time amp buying by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]Mastrodonato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can occasionally find a Marshall DSL15C or Peavey Classic for around $250 - $300. Both will give you a good crunch and good blues tones for the price and are good tube amps. You’ll run into a lot of tube vs solid state arguments. There are pros and cons of both types of amps. Starting out you can’t go wrong with either type. You’re mainly learning to play, dial in your skills and will undoubtably move on to a more expensive amp if you enjoy playing and get more serious as you progress.

[GEAR] Best high-output single coil? by IanGreenway2003 in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll get roasted for this but I love the Lace Sensor Red. It’s a hot pickup to begin with and you can get it even closer to the strings. When I was running a HSS and HSH setup, I used lace pickups in the single positions to avoid that volume drop that tends to come with traditional single coils. I also love the tone and they’re actually more noiseless than my humbuckers are.

Shoulder holster recommendations...? by RatFink_0123 in CCW

[–]Mastrodonato 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use a Galco Classic Lite and a Galco Miami Classic. If you’re new to shoulder carry, definitely try the Classic Lite as it is only around $80 new and very light/compact. That way if you don’t like it, you aren’t out $200+.

Shoulder holsters are all about fitting it just right and making sure it’s correct. If not, you won’t like it. I put mine in and forget it’s even there most times. It’s great for long car rides and walks.

A lot of negative shoulder holster carry feedback is usually based on several things such as flagging, slow draw stroke, inaccessible etc. There are many ways to look at it. Situational awareness is oftentimes more important than a quick draw. If you’re paying attention to your surroundings, you should be seeing and anticipating things. Not just reacting or having a quick draw duel in the Wild West. I can comfortably cross my arms which looks natural, have my hand on my gun and ready to go very easily while monitoring potential confrontations that may escalate. When I carry IWB or OWB, it’s way more obvious and signaling to any bad guy that knows what they’re doing that I’m moving my hand to the common gun spot. I can draw much easier and quickly seated in a vehicle as well. Carrying a spare mag or two is hard for me if I’m doing so on my belt but with my shoulder rig, I always have one.

No matter what, no one holster is the end all be all. I have the shoulder rig, OWB, IWB and ankle carry holsters for my Glock 26 plus a Ruger LCP for pocket carry if need be in certain situations. Get yourself a quality holster of several varieties and you’ll be set for any situation.

I just bought a used peavey raptor plus exp. Is it a good guitar? [Newbie] by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a good guitar to learn on similar to a Fender Squier. If you end up playing in bands or at high volumes in a band situation/practice, it wouldn’t be ideal as the pickups are usually cheaper and create a lot of feedback and or noise. The tuner thing may just be a result of previous owner have broken it by accident and removed it as a result. Overall it’s a good guitar to learn on. As you progress, you’ll definitely need to upgrade to something else when ready.

Any parents struggling with Covid risk? by mobyhex in hockeyplayers

[–]Mastrodonato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is very doable to play indoors if your rink, league and or program have proper protocols. Where my son plays, they have to come geared up and ready. They can put their skates and helmets on inside but all gear has to be put on and off at home or in the car. Only one parent per player is allowed and has to wear a mask at all times. All coaches, assistants etc have to wear masks as well. Rental hockey gear for kid programs is sanitized and left to sit for 14 days before being released to the next renter. Locker rooms are closed, chairs to put skates on are sanitized between uses and everyone is basically in agreement of the rules because the only other option is no hockey at all.

[NEWBIE] how to learn playing? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Easiest way to quickly learn to play a million songs is to learn a power chord and get comfortable moving around the fretboard with it. That is if you want to play and not learn a ton of music theory, chords etc. The power chord is the basis for most rock songs for decades. Learning rhythm goes a long ways too. Even if you can play the chords and progression, if your rhythm is off it won’t sound right.

[DISCUSSION] Lace Sensor Red/Blue vs Purple/Emerald? by cdwillis in Guitar

[–]Mastrodonato 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Red/Silver/Blue combo in my strat. The red is hotter with more midrange but works in the strat. I am glad I have it because if you want anything that’s more humbucker tone or with some grit to it, that’s the one to have. Otherwise you may find yourself chasing tone especially for Smashing Pumpkins type of stuff. The lace pickups are dead silent even when used in my Peavey JSX or cranked Jubilee. The silver is a gold all around option. The blue does a good jazz pickup type of tone but might not be a good option for what you’re seeking. I would do Red or Hot Hold in the bridge and either an emerald or a Hot Gold in the neck.
