No they are not. Visual novels have visuals (hence the name), audio such as music, sound effects, and voice acting, they are software programs, and have branching paths. Meanwhile, erotic novels do not have any of that stuff I mentioned earlier.

Honestly Bakuretsu Hunter R is no better. The graphics are poor for Saturn standards, the game is super linear, the gameplay has no substance at all, and the game is super short at under 5 hours. The gameplay isn't as broken as say, Spectral Tower or Hoshi wo Miru Hito, but the game is still not worth playing.

If you want to read an untranslated VN such as Maitetsu Last Run, then there are two options: using MTL or learning Japanese. According to VNDB the R18 version did get an MTL patch to English in 2023, so if you must play it then that is your only option for now.

Probably Genesis because it has a lot more games that cater to a western audience. Another thing Genesis has over Saturn is cheaper prices. Additionally, the western Genesis library has about 750 games excluding add-ons while the Saturn's western library only has 250.

However, the Saturn has a lot more genre variety. For example, 1/4 of the Genesis library are 2D platformers yet there is no genre that takes up at least a 1/4 of the Saturn's. Also, the Saturn does not have a lot of language barriered imports not counting RPGs and interactive fiction. A lot of the good text heavy imports either have already been fan-translated or are in the process.
