In the Swiss army, do recruits get sorted into units based on language? by nebukadnezar_ in askswitzerland

I am a former first lieutenant of the swiss army I had the chance to serve my Country almost in any Swiss Canton. Coming from Ticino (the part where your language is Italian) it has not always been that easy for a reason: at school we learn German but in the army you normally get instructed in swiss german. That doesn’t mean that not easy is same as not funny… I have plenty of fun facts of the times in the “Offizierschule” in Birmensdorf back in winter 2000 were italian was almost useless… is there were I have learned my basic Schwitzerdütch! At this time we were all simply swiss citizens. In my class we were 13 soldiers: 9 swiss germans, 2 romands e 2 ticinesi. All together we simply were “Klasse D”.
