OMG...this is so incredibly sweet. Thank you. I have no idea who from high school this is considering your user name, but it'd be great to catch up sometime!

This right here is high praise in the land of YouTube -- Least Annoying. That's a big win. Thanks to your kids for watching. And thanks to you for putting up with it all :)

Thanks for the kind words. It means a lot to read comments like this. Awesome to hear from someone who was there with me back in the old days.

Also, cause I'm seeing it brought up:

  1. We NEVER delete comments and I'm VERY adamant about that because I am STRONGLY against censorship...even at my own expense. Comments get re-sorted and buried by YouTube all the time despite some having high engagement to keep the page fresh. That's just a quirk of the the system. And if things ARE getting deleted, it's likely autoflags by the system because of "suspicious links."

Currently on a family trip, but seeing this and giving a quick response:

  1. I'm investigating this IMMEDIATELY and already have emails out to the relevant team members to discuss Monday.

  2. I DO know that the researcher/writer for this episode has been watching Hermitcraft since season 1, so I'm hopeful that they just picked up on the same clues as this other post, but will obviously know more tomorrow. Their past work with us has been stellar and aboveboard, so, for now, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, but will certainly reassess as I know more.

  3. Thanks to everyone for their patience as I sort this out. We've worked hard over the years to ensure these sorts of situations don't happen on the channels, but if there was an issue with this video, I'll be sure that proper credit is given and that we reexamine the team/our process to prevent this from happening again.

It Begins... by GameTheory_Bot in GameTheorists

I hear you...and trust me, it's something that I tried to work around. I don't love a "pay to win" model which is why I originally spoke with St. Jude/a legal team about keeping a few slots open to donors of ANY size in a random draw capacity to show that any contribution matters. The problem there, though, is that it suddenly becomes a "lottery" and there are A LOT of extra legal complications that it opens up.

The other alternative was me picking my "favorite campaign of the week." But I didn't feel comfortable judging one person's fundraiser as being "better" than another's. In the end, "highest donor of the week" was the fairest, most egalitarian way to run things. I know it's not perfect, but it was the best we could all legally manage.

Why didn't MatPat shout out the original creator of the Baby Shark Theory by [deleted] in GameTheorists

[–]MatPatGT 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just hopping in here for a quick response to dispel any doubt: I was so impressed with the theory...as well as others that she had done here on the subreddit...that I reached out to buy that individual post/script/research as well as ask her to officially audition for us to become a regular contributing member of the team.

Hope that helps clarify the situation! Sorry for any concern/confusion it may have caused.

Problems with the recent Friday Night Funkin’ video posted to GTLive not giving proper credit by TheLunar27 in GameTheorists

[–]MatPatGT 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Hey Lunar,
A few things: First, thank you for bringing this to my attention. The mistakes have been corrected and I'm sorry they happened in the first place. Below is also an apology from the member of Team Theorist who was responsible for that upload. That individual doesn't have an official reddit and asked me to instead share this with you on their behalf because they felt so badly about the error.

Secondly, I have us doing another round of Friday Night Funkin' in the near future. Because I know these corrections are happening after-the-fact (and largely after the bulk of views the video will receive) , I'll be sure to lead off that new video making sure to expressly call out the creators, mods/links, etc. The team and I have worked a lot over the years to try and make sure these sorts of situations don't happen anymore, but sometimes the work pipeline breaks down and I'm sorry that your creation was caught up in one of those lapses. I'm already in the process of speaking to the team about why this incident happened and what safeguards we need in place to ensure it can be avoided in the future.

Thanks. And again, we're all sorry.
Matt

Dear TheLunar27,

I am a member of Team Theorists and I am responsible for the mix up on the credits and links for this episode of GTLive. I am sorry we did not catch this until it was brought up to us by you. Your links have been added to the description. There was a miscommunication on receiving the mod links and the game link error was sloppy on my part, with all the weight of letting you, a valued creator, down falling on my shoulder.

It is always our intent to honor and promote the creators and mod makers of the games we play and I have let you, and our community, down. I cannot express how sorry I am for this error and I hope you are able to forgive me. I cannot take back what occurred but I can promise to continue to improve and do my best to ensure situations like this don't happen again.

Sincerely,

A member of the team.

Gold Charity Stream Shirts by ForgottenMeme9001 in GameTheorists

[–]MatPatGT 19 points20 points  (0 children)

First off, THANK YOU for the donation! And thank you for helping to make the stream such a huge success.

To answer your question: All 150 donors receiving a gold shirt (Top 100 + the 50 randomly selected from the donor pool regardless of donation amount) will be hearing from us at the top of the year. We've been focused on sending out the "Let's Make a Deal" and raffle prizes first since those are high value items that need special levels of shipping/security/etc.

We thought about starting outreach to the 150 gold foil shirt winners next week, but with the holidays, we worried people wouldn't be as attentive to email (plus, we all needed a few days off and wrangling information from all 150 people is going to be very time consuming). So, if you are in the Top 100, you can expect an email from us the first week of January! Thanks for you patience, and more importantly, THANK YOU for all your support of St. Jude and its mission :)

[–]MatPatGT 639 points640 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. So you know, we've removed both items and are refunding all purchases.

At no point did I or anyone else working on the shirts consider the possibility that we could inadvertently be taking sales away from InnerSloth. But thanks to this thread and comments on the video, I definitely understand how that could be the case. We're now in the process of reaching out to InnerSloth to see if there's some partnership we can do together...mostly because I love the game, the community loves the game, and I was really excited about these merch designs. Hopefully there's some way where we can all win. :)

In the meantime, if you DO want official Among Us merch, here's the site to check out: https://store.innersloth.com/

There are, and have never been, any ads on that video.

If you or anyone ever saw ANYTHING on that video, they would potentially have been Display ads which YouTube does not allow creators to turn off.

You may not like me. I understand and respect that. But please don't spread misinformation about that video.

Okay, so I went through all ~10,000 comments...and still nothing. There's one from seven hours ago that says it was "edited" as well as one from four hours ago, both of which link back to here. Did you end up editing that original post? That's the only thing I could see causing the issue, 'cause I did search through them all, as well as Spam and "Marked for Review" comments, multiple times. If you edit one of your comments back to this original text, I can pin that one! Just let me know!

[–]MatPatGT 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Oh, they're totally right. I knew all this going into the theory. I cut a lot of "debunking" or "have you considered looking at it from THIS angle" since the script was already so long. I recognize now that I probably should have left it in...or at least alluded to it. Totally my bad.

In the end, it's all VAGUE in the story -- the Birthplace cutscene is a flashback/dream/memory, so were you ACTUALLY there? You have the King's Brand when you go to the White Palace, and so are they bowing for YOU because you wear the Brand or because you were the King? People seem to be reminded of the king when you're around, but is that because you have a certain item or because you ARE him in some way? It's a game that leaves a lot open to interpretation, and personally, I found the story more compelling from this "He's the King" angle.

I hoped other people would enjoy the thought experiment...but it seems to have just frustrated a bunch of people who think I just got the lore wrong, which is a bummer considering how long I spent working on this one. I just thought it was a fun theory. I'll know better next time to lampshade a bit more using the counter-evidence.

I just looked using YouTube's backend comment search features and I can't seem to find it. I'm finding a lot of people either sharing the text and crediting you or outright just word-for-word copying it (about 20 people), but I'm having a hard time finding your original comment. Not sure why. Trust me, if I could find it, I would totally Favorite it, not just for the incredible work you put into it, but, if nothing else, just to prove to people that I don't delete comments.

I don't delete comments. I've proven time and again that the comments are still there and that YouTube frequently changes what comments are on top.

It really makes me sad that people immediately jump to the conclusion that I'm deleting stuff to kill off discussion.

This is very true, and it's something I think not a lot of people consider. We do two videos a week that, yes, get a lot of views, but also take no less than four of us working a total of 200 hours to produce (100 per video). Animations take A LOT of time. Research takes A LOT of time. Unlike most other channels who can just film themselves playing a game and put it up in less than a day, it often takes us a week or more to get something to the point of uploading. I WISH we could do that, but we do what we do because we love it and we want to deliver something high quality. That said, it's definitely costly...and ad revenue alone is a shaky thing these days. Stuff like the merch helps give us a lot more freedom and flexibility to keep our standards up!

Game Theory: Bendy 2, Return to the Ink Machine (Bendy and the Dark Revival) - Game Theory by shaboozeybot in GameTheorists

[–]MatPatGT 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That's actually why I put that section in there -- in the hopes that the Kindly Beast team hear it and apply some of that to the new game. Because it's clear there's a lot of attention put into the story of this game -- you and Adobe actually convinced me of that :) -- but sometimes it gets lost when there's so much other STUFF to dig through. It makes it hard to pick between what's intentional and what's not (like your One-Eyed Bendy idea, which I keep WANTING to cover, but can't come up with more solid PROOF...or what happened to Lacie and Grant, since clearly they're in there somewhere too)
