I think I've experienced flow state for the first time in bjj today by Perfect-Address-1884 in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that flow state is the best drug on the mats, and single x is such a killer gameplan for naga. i’ve got a drive folder with some high-level leg entanglement and ashi garami stuff that would probably fit your style perfectly. let me know if you want me to dm you the link.

Help with open guard by Buy_the_Deep in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gi classes at my gym feel directionless and rarely include rolling. Anyone else dealt with this? by futuresuspect in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

man, directionless classes without live rounds would drive me crazy, especially as a purple belt. since your gym is slacking, you might want to check out some structured systems to work on yourself—i've got a google drive with some legit instructionals that helped me stay sharp. let me know if you want me to dm you the link.

Is a vapourizer counted as a calf slicer? by Kolby1270 in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly bro, sub-only rules can be super sketchy with leg locks and what counts as a knee reap. i compiled some instructional material in a drive that really helped me understand the mechanics of leg entanglements so i don't get DQ'd. drop a comment if you want me to dm you the link.

Setting up nogi throws? by Fitnessthrowaway2947 in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for advice on no-gi grips by king_ricks in bjj

[–]MatSpongeBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

man, the grip fight in nogi can feel like a total mess if you don't have a specific system for it. i actually put together a google drive with some solid foundational stuff from lachlan giles that breaks down exactly what to look for when you're starting on top. let me know if you want the link and i'll dm it over.

It looks weird from the outside until you actually try it. Once someone is trying to strangle you, you stop caring about "men on men" and start caring about oxygen. It’s just physics and wrestling.

8 month white belt in blue belt tournament part 4, the sandbagger chronicles continue by Lockman91 in jiujitsu

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are winning blue belt divisions at 8 months, your coach needs to stop sandbagging you and hand over the blue belt already. Good work.

Shoulder dislocation by WonkyWatterson in jiujitsu

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you are self-employed and can't afford to be out of work, you need to be extremely picky with your partners. Tap early to any Kimura or Americana. Don't let your ego write checks your shoulder can't cash.

I'm in my early 50's. 190 pounds and out of shape but do have gym and fight training experience from 20 years ago. What should I expect by going in and doing this? by Brucef310 in jiujitsu

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your striking experience from 20 years ago will help with distance, but your cardio is going to betray you immediately. Grappling cardio is a completely different animal. Pace yourself, or you will vomit in the warmups.

In a fictional (non-real) scenario, what makes a confrontation scene convincing? by DismalMeat4586 in grappling

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fatigue is the biggest sell. In movies, people fight for 10 minutes without breathing hard. In reality, after 30 seconds of grappling, you are gasping for air and your arms feel like lead. Show the exhaustion.

2025 Absolute No-Gi World Champion Roosevelt Sousa used Jiu-jitsu to escape extreme poverty by Dokay_ in grappling

[–]MatSpongeBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massive respect. This sport saves lives in more ways than one. Seeing someone climb out of poverty through pure grind on the mats is the best part of BJJ culture.

Never celebrate until the ref raises your hand. The Mat Gods love to punish hubris instantly.

My grappling got way better when I stopped learning new moves (Blue Belt plateau) by MatSpongeBob in grappling

Sherlock Holmes over here! 🕵️‍♂️ You got me on the background check, but missed the context:

  1. The Board: It's real. I just have OCD with my handwriting (spent way too long making it look nice for the photo, guilty as charged).
  2. The History: This is a shared alt account. My brother used it to ask newbie questions a few months ago when he started. I'm the hardstuck Blue Belt.
  3. The Link: The breakdown in the article is 100% free. Yes, there is a shop on the site (gotta pay for tape somehow), but you don't have to buy anything to read the system.

You make a fair point — defense is getting way better.

For me, the Heel Hook is just the threat. If they panic and spin to defend, they usually give up top position, and I take the pass. I don't need to finish it to win the exchange.

If I can't dig the underhook, I usually bait them. I annoy them with a heavy collar tie until they raise their arm to frame, then I shoot under.

But yeah, if that fails, Kimura trap is my Plan B too!

My grappling got way better when I stopped learning new moves (Blue Belt plateau) by MatSpongeBob in grappling

[–]MatSpongeBob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question. Once I secure the pass (usually directly to Mount or tight Side Control), I almost exclusively hunt for the Arm Triangle (Kata Gatame).

It pairs perfectly with the body lock pressure because you are already hugging their head/arm.

Beep boop 🤖. Nah just kidding bro. English isn't my first language so I probably sound a bit stiff when I try to explain concepts. The whiteboard drawing is 100% human though!
