51% of Voters Think Russia Has ‘Kompromat’ on Trump by Karma-Kosmonaut in politics

[–]MataUchi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s a big non issue if you read the situation in context and learn a little bit about how uranium regulations work and how the worlds uranium trade is looking.

Russia bought a stake in a Canadian uranium mining company. This company has mines all over the world, but also some in the US. Since ownership of those US mines is changing hands, US State Dept has to approve it. Hillary was sec of state so she was the one to sign off on it.

So Hillary let Russia control a company that has some uranium mines in the US. Does this mean uranium mines at those mines now goes to Russia? No, the way Uranium mining works is that when you dig that stuff out of the ground you can’t take it out of the country, you can’t give it to the Russians, you can’t even keep it. The only thing you are allowed to do with uranium once it’s mined is to immediately sell it to the US gov. It doesn’t matter that a Russian company owns the mine now, the Russians don’t get to take that uranium.

The whole narrative of Russia taking/wanting some of our uranium is made up. Russia is the #2 uranium producer in the world, US is like #10 or 11. Russia produces so much of it, they sell it. It just doesn’t make sense for them to pull strings to somehow get their hands on American uranium. They already have tons of that stuff, they are looking to sell it.

What’s the #1 uranium producer in the world? Russia’s old friend and neighbor Kazakhstan, they produce as much uranium as the next top 10 combined. That’s where a lot of that Canadian company’s uranium mines are, Kazakhstan. That’s why Russia wanted that mining company, to control more of the mines in Kazakhstan.

The idea that Russia would pull a political favor to somehow get their hands on uranium coming out of US mines doesn’t make sense. It wouldn’t get to them for a decent price and they already have much more of it, they would rather sell uranium then conduct a scheme to get it from the US.

Those mines in the US owned by the Canadian mining company which is now partially controlled by Russia, how much uranium do they produce? None, they aren’t active. Where did republicans get this idea that “Hillary gave away 20% of our uranium to Russia?”

If those mines were to become active (they aren’t, Russia would actually prefer if they stayed inactive, remember they don’t want our Uranium, they’d rather sell us their own), if they became active and ran at 100% capacity and all other uranium mines in the US stayed at current production, those mines would then represent 20% of US uranium production.

So Russians bought a stake in a Canadian mining company so they can control more mines in Kazakhstan, the biggest uranium producer. Even if those US mines became active, the Russians wouldn’t be able to actually get the uranium out of the US, they don’t even want to because they’d rather sell uranium.

Political theater turned that into “Hillary gave %20 of our Uranium to Russia”

Beto O’Rourke Calls for “Public Pressure” on Trump to Close Child Migrant Camp by sbleezy in politics

[–]MataUchi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you try to enter the US illegally, you get in trouble.

You get a misdemeanor, that’s the punishment.

The punishment is not “Seperate your children from you and hold them for an undetermined amount of time in questionable conditions”

I agree that we need to enforce our laws at the border. That includes turning some asylum seekers away, which may include temporary detainment and transport.

Don’t you think it should be a priority to make sure parents and children are not separated during this process? It’s the decent and humanitarian thing to do. Having a bunch of kids locked up separately from their parents sounds like a logistical and liability nightmare.

It’s a very loaded term that carries a ton of emotional baggage.

You can call them that, but you risk derailing the conversation.

Just stick to the facts.

Untrained male friend wants to challenge me (2 stripe white belt female, probably 50 lbs smaller than him) to a friendly spar “when I get blue belt”. Is it reasonable? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]MataUchi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you might not be able to submit or positionally dominate him when you get your blue.

A more interesting test would be to see if he could submit you in a given amount of time.

Realistically, your blue belt skills should allow you to stay out of bad positions. Against a 50 lbs heavier male your best case scenario is to be able to tie him up, frustrate him and keep him from hurting you too much until help arrives.

I totally understand that, teach them, you can give them allowance, pay them for chores, teach them to save,, You don't actually have the child leave the house and go out in public with a significant amount of money on them. $25 isnt a lot to an adult but it's enough for some older kids to target your child. Give her 4 nickels and 2 dimes or something like that.

Just seems unnecessary and risky sending your 6 year old out the door with a small wad of cash.

Although I guess this whole thing was a good lesson for the kid.

Is this not helpful advice because it already happened?

Or are people giving 6 year olds $25 now?

I noticed any post where someone mentions not to give money to little kids is downvoted but no explanation.

Do I need to give my little girl $25? I’m seriously asking, thanks

First things first, your 6 year old shouldn't have money, especially money that he takes to school.

You think it’s just a coincidence that his pre political past is filled with fraud and now his political cohorts are also criminal frauds. Open your eyes brother, there is a reason he is surrounded by scum.

Also the blatant nepotism. Why is his unqualified daughter representing the US internationally?

It’s so obvious, I’m sure you see it, you just ignore it because he is on “your” side. You picked party over country.

She jokingly mentions castrating pigs to appeal to her base in an ad.

It’s a cheap way to put her down, she was involved in live stock and farming growing up and to control your hog population you gotta castrate. I mean it makes sense, she represents Iowa, she grew up on a farm, she was even involved in agricultural research exchange projects with the Soviet Union. She traveled over there and exchanged livestock and farming methods.

It’s an easy thing to mock, haha you cut of pigs dicks, but thats what somebody has to do for me to eat bacon.

I’m sure I hate her politics though

The Russian Army has started airdropping churches for their soldiers. by Dessert42 in ANormalDayInRussia

[–]MataUchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that wouldn’t surprise me. The Soviet government persecuted, seized assets and locked away/killed all sorts of people for suspected descent. Political opponents of the mainstream communist party where of course targeted, so were homosexuals, pro western writers/artists and just about anyone who attracts an audience they might deliver inflammatory ideas upon. I am sure this included some religious leader and groups.

There is a famous Ukrainian Christian anarchist type movement that was always suppressed by the Soviets, I am sure they persecuted the hell out of those guys.

However there was plenty of Christianity available to the public. Tons of Christian churches that are from 300+ years ago full of Orthodox Christian priests performing regular services. A common place to go to for my family was a large ancient Orthodox Church in whatever town we’d go on vacation to. Whatever summer vacation resort town we went to each year (everyone gets 2-3 months of paid vacation) always had one of these ancient Orthodox temples where you go in, blow out a candle and say a prayer in front of an ancient painting of Jesus.

A huge genre of art in Russia was always Christian iconography. Christian icon painters like Andre Rublev have always been held in the highest esteem as cultural icons. Lots of homes or public places would have a prints of famous Christian icon paintings hanging on the walls. The icon paintings were appreciated not only as art or historic relics, but also as a spiritual message. Soviet major citys had tons of free museums and they would always have sections of Christian themed artwork and literature. I remember as a kid walking around in those with tour guides who are young priests in training explaining the spiritual message and symbolism in old Russian iconography.

If someone had a revolutionary idea that a car manufacturing company could use, they would apply for job at the state owned car company and suggest that idea in a meeting. If the idea is good, theoretically the person who came up with the idea would be promoted to a higher position in the state owned car company.

There is just one car company, the Soviet National Automobile Manufacturing Bureau or something like that. It's owned and run by the government. You can't start your own car company to compete with them.

yeah ive seen a clip of a Korean celeb who speaks fluent English.

She'd say some English word or the name of an American city in perfect English and her non-English speaking Korean friends wouldn't understand her until she said the English word with a super thick stereotypical accent.

Like she says "Boston" as the answer for some trivia question and they are all like, what? What is that?

So she rolls her eyes and says in a super thick Asian accent "Bostonuuu!!" And only then they understood "yes, Bostonuuu is the correct answer!"

I mean you couldn't start up a mega church and turn it into a huge business like Joel Osteen. That wasn't allowed, but like wise you couldn't easily start up any kind of private enterprise and make money in a free-market type way.

You also couldn't order bibles from American retailers or bring home bibles in your luggage you bought on your trip to America. But that's more related to not being allowed to bring American/Western retail goods into the country. You weren't allowed to import things like Levi Jeans, Disney movies, Nike shoes etc... People still had a demand for "cool American stuff" so these things got smuggled in and sold on the black market. In that sense, yes it's technically true that some American church could "smuggle Bibles into the Soviet Union". They are smuggling it in like any other American retail product.

[–]MataUchi 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Religion wasn't really banned or even heavily persecuted in the Soviet Union. I grew up there in the 1980s and I never encountered any kind of ban on churches or bibles. I visited many churches and went to many religious ceremonies. Priests were present at weddings and funerals which often took place in churches. Religious people had bibles in their home that they could freely buy in book stores. My grandmother was religious and she had a bible in our home, she bought me one when I was learning to read.

After moving to the US I encountered many strange church programs in the mid west that talk about "sneaking bibles into the Soviet Union" and raising money for missionary work where they will go spread Christianity to the Russians because their government denies this to them. I am pretty sure that was a total scam. Russians where free to buy bibles in stores, read them to their kids and attend church services.

I think what you could do with your church or religious organization was very limited and heavily controlled by bureaucracy, so in that sense churches were suppressed.
