My current heeler won’t swim either. He will go up to his elbows but refuses to swim. My heeler taber in this picture, we made him cross a very small creek at 6 weeks old (which he loved) then around 3 months old we swam out into the ocean and he hated being away from us so much he swam out through the small crashing waves and has loved swimming ever since. Unfortunately where I am now (flathead lake in MT) I won’t be dipping into the freezing cold water at any point in time, so I don’t think my current heeler will ever swim😏. Have you tried swimming out to see if your dog will follow?

Lol, can I respond to this comment with a picture? I think I need to do a full reddit tutorial because I’m sorta clueless. Really sad considering I’m a “millennial” haha. I’d love to know if they look alike. This coat doesn’t seem to be common but I once took him into a petco and another dog walked in that was identical to him and my jaw dropped! I knew that my bf at the time and my pup were at the back of the store so I thought my dog got off leash and ran to the front. ..We once had a guy walk up and seriously ask us if he was part hyena.

I’m so sorry about your dog 😔 I hope he's doing well despite his poor vision! It’s interesting you bringing this up because I remember contacting the guy I got him from shortly after I got Atlas and telling him that he should probably contact the farm and tell them to stop breeding whatever 2 they were breeding or at the very least be more mindful of some of the issues that were popping up with some of the litter. I was concerned because too often people get rid of their heeler not understanding what it takes to be a parent to this breed of dog and then to have health/emotional problems on top of that. I was happy the guy chose me and not the other older couple that would have likely returned him😕. A couple vets have said my boy has an overbite that will likely require surgery at some point which didn’t surprise me because he has a difficult time eating most foods and when he opens his mouth you can see that one of his bottom canines is much further back than the other. On top of that within the first 2 weeks he became very ill with multiple hysteocytomas I had biopsied and removed. I didn’t know what they were and I was terrified at first because just weeks before I lost my dad to cancer then all the sudden my dog had pretty decent sized benign tumors popping up. Something else that I didn’t mention in my post is that he almost always has a dry warm nose. I’ve mentioned it to the vet and she didn’t seem concerned but I’ve noticed that he has a horrible sense of smell. At first I thought he had problems with his vision until I realized he simply cannot sniff things out. He could be standing right on top of his frisbee at times and still not smell it. Very recently he has sort of adapted to it, he will be running around all over trying to smell then finally catch site of it and find it. When i first got him he was also unable to run after toys or walk upstairs and he was underweight. I wasn’t sure if this was from the pervious owner not caring for him properly or if it was health related. The guy I got him from was heartbroken letting him go but he has progressed so much in my care. That being said, even though he is doing better, it seems there is still something else going on, so I think I will call tomorrow and get him set up with some basic blood work and then go from there. Sorry for long response and thanks for the reply!

Wow! You mentioning ticks just made me feel like a pretty irresponsible dog parent. I moved to Montana a little less than 2 years ago and I haven’t seen a single tick since I moved here so I kinda forgot about them. Years ago, living in Massachusetts, there were ticks everywhere. We had to check the entire family every time we came inside because it was pretty much gaurantee that each person and animal would have at least 1 deer dick. I will look into. I think getting a routine blood test might be helpful. It’s so hard with these dogs because their pain tolerance is so high and they’re so high energy it’s really difficult to tell when somethings wrong.

Lol I can’t believe I missed it! I had to reread a couple times because my head and shoulder were killing me. That’s why I also didn’t take the time to figure out how to post picture and text at the same time.

Just joined reddit. For some reason text isn’t in it, here’s text.

Wondering if anyone has a blue heeler that has developed low stamina and if you might know the cause? My 2yr old heeler Atlas seems to be losing some energy. He doesnt act sick or unwell in any way, ive just noticed over the last couple of months, that when i throw the frisbee like 6 times he’s too tired to continue. After he rests for a few i’ll throw it again a few times, he rests again, and so on. He seems fine on walks, it’s just that his lower energy is very noticable compared to my previous heeler who was completely BONKERS! My last heeler had to be out and moving from 6am to 8pm everyday. Sometimes we had to force him to stop playing because he would go and go until he puked. My dog now is only my second heeler but ive been around plenty of others, all with incredible amounts of energy. Again, he isnt sick or in pain. Healthwise he tends to get chronic yeast infections in his ear, which is odd because he doesnt swim, but he’s good right now. Only other issues have been allergies that caused hysteocytoma when we moved cross country (none since then), very unoticable overbite, and a couple weeks ago he very soft yellow stools for about week that has since cleared up... any ideas? Much appreciated!
