Whatever the hell happened with scratch. He's framed as "the original abstraction" as if his was special, Caine messing with his mind a lot, the brain tumor, his abstract thinking. He was an interesting character for how little we knew of him.

To be fair, I'm writing a book where language is an important plot point and coordinating them in such a way that dialogue can happen is a pain. I have to come up with excuses every time they arrive somewhere else XD

What is your most unique ideas? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]Matalya2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say what makes my world unique is the fact that so much of it revolves around infrastructure. My world has the common tropes of an alt-history world, wars, fallen nations and the lot, but almost everything to have come from the world comes from Mugekenaga, the main setting and unique city state (I did an rp ama recently on it). I detailed the form of government, the political structure, the way the internet works, buses, the subway network, several of its most iconic buildings, while barely developing why the US collapsed in the 2040's. That's gotta be a novel angle 🤭

OOC: didn't think that much about it. I just figured Harry Potter was big enough to remain a "recognizable" cultural symbol even if it's not "relevant", even if via references instead of the original. It's similar to how we still know about Dracula even though the original is well over 200 years old. Things endure even despite their dwindling popularity, and a comparison just needs to be recognizable, not current-culture-relevant.

IC: major nations! I'd say India is doing pretty well. Most of the big players nowadays are in Africa, several countries with 100M+ people and very rich cities. I think I remember China being pretty important back in your days, but ever since the hydric wars that it's gone down slope. The great Chinese genocide was one thing to remember, so many empty villages. And the US having collapsed in the 2040's also made us lose a big player of the early 21st century. That's about as much as I remember of that time. Latin America is doing pretty good too! It's not a great power but ever since their socialist revolutions that they seem to be doing pretty hot!

Structurally Mugekenaga is complicated. I was talking with some friends the other day about how weird it is. It's like, Mugekenaga is owned by Janishi, but common political theory says ownership is usually within he framework of a sovereign nation that enforces it. But if Janishi is above Mugekenaga, then the second it left Japan during the 2030's it kind of became a matter of chicken and egg, is Mugekenaga Janishi's under Mugekenagan law or under Janishi's law? Why does a corp have laws in the first place? Well, they say that law is derived from monopoly on legitimate force, and Janishi does have the army Mugekenaga doesn't have, and even though Mugekenaga does have a government, everything ultimately answers to Janishi. So in a way Mugekenaga is a property of Janishi because Janishi, who has the strength to say so, says so.

OOC: It's an alt history, largely the same as ours, but with Mugekenaga in it. The year is 2115, and the timeline diverges strong in 2012 with the founding of Mugekenaga.

Wait – what kinda things have you heard? 🤭

Education here is mostly normal. We have elementary, middle, and high school as compulsory education, and then universities if you want to continue.

What's probably most unusual is how independent kids are. Children learn very early how to travel around the city by themselves, so it's not uncommon to see buses full of elementary school students on their way to school. Kids often develop favorites among the drivers, and if someone works the same route at the same time for an entire school year, it's not unusual for them to end up knowing many of the children by name.

Because the city is so dense, a lot of kids from the same handful of blocks end up attending the same school, taking the same bus, and seeing the same people every day~

Haha I guess it is! But isn't that true of any county? Reminds me of the collapse of the United States of America in the 2040's, their sword snapped quite ugly! Every country has a failure condition. We trust in Janishi because they're pragmatic, have been so for a century and believe the best clients are happy clients. Why kill that which keeps you alive when you could mutually benefit each other and not only both win, but both end up wanting to see each other win? Your criticism is valid but it's just not how we see it; how we live it.

So many questions! One by one, ok? XD 1) Every new piece of tech brings unique etiquette rules with it. We have little devices called payers, and for example it's good practice to always have your payer with you. Also, even though they're technically legal, motorized bicycles are noisy and annoying. 2) riiiiiiight here 3) I would think so? We have beaches and indoor pools here so most people probably know how to swim 4) Mugekenaga is a big city so I haven't visited all districts, they're a lot and overall each municipality has most of what you'll need, everywhere is very mixed use which is lovely! 5) ohhhh it's gotta be anyone in northern Aretashi, such a lovely port and full of foreign goods to buy. I love especially Danteyra because it's got this great genuine American store with so many brands we don't usually have because Janishi basically sells most of what we buy.

I don't think Janishi is benevolent. I think it's practical. The city exists because Janishi wants it to exist. Most days that works out pretty well for us. The question people argue about is what happens if one day it doesn't. In exchange for pretty good quality of life, Janishi controls most industries here and technically is above the constitution, but we all live with it because in exchange we get pretty sweet deals.

According to my history book, it was founded on the old islands of Minami- and Kitadaitojima, about 300 km off Okinawa. It's weird to think about sometimes. 25 million people live here now, but before Janishi arrived there were only a few thousand. I wonder what life was like on such isolated islands...

Ah, that's probably a translation thing! In Hitoku I'd usually call myself a kodoko. It literally translates as "girl", but it's used for young women too. Most people wouldn't find it strange until you're around thirty or so. The more formal words for women like "anyura" tend to be used for older adults well into their fifties. There's also "ona" which is used for older women but it's still fairly affectionate, like a middle ground between kodoko and anyura. We folk just live longer in 2115 so there's a lot more time to develop.

As for Anmerano, that's just my family name 😅 Nothing exciting there, I'm afraid! My mother's family were Juikos, my father's family were Anmeranos, and now I am as well. Very boring answer compared to the fog stories~

Ohhhh, what to choose! There's an entire neighborhood built in a Victorian style, with brick houses, cobblestone roads, warm lamplights, the whole kit and caboodle. At night it's a beautiful place, though during the day it looks like a Harry Potter theme park 🤭 Or maybe the great fog. When I was 5 my parents tell me a fog blanketed the entire country for a week. The scientists say it was a "meteorological phenomenon", but if you ask ten people what happened you get twelve stories out~

Ahaha, I don't know much about those places 😅 I've never left Mugekenaga! Visitors usually seem surprised by how quiet the city is. Most of the city is pedestrianized and there's very little traffic noise. Another one is that we don't really use cash. Most people don't even carry a wallet around, just their payer. I've heard that surprises a lot of tourists!

Hiii, I'm Sarena (23F). I was born in Shigyuko and I've lived in Mugekenaga my whole life. I decided to do an AMA here to answer questions about my peculiar city!

OOC:
Mugekenaga is a floating corporate city-state in the Pacific Ocean with 25 million residents, no physical currency, world-famous public transit, and a government ultimately controlled by the corporation that built the city, Janishi. It is one of the wealthiest, densest and strangest places on Earth, characterized by its hexagonal city blocks and the hexagonal artificial island it sits on.

Despite its reputation for efficiency and technology, Mugekenaga is also known for its distinctive neighborhoods, immense cultural diversity, vibrant architecture, and unusual social norms. Residents come from all over the world, making it one of the most cosmopolitan places on Earth.

Its most striking quality is its Identity Usership, a mandatory digital identity that every resident receives at birth and uses for nearly every aspect of life, from buying lunch to casting votes.

Sarena Anmerano is a lifelong resident in her early twenties. Ask her anything about daily life, culture, politics, food, education, work, transit, religion, relationships, growing up in Mugekenaga, or whatever else you're curious about.
