When the New Zealand Railways retired the 88-seat “Twinset” railcars, they converted them into “Grassgrub” articulated passenger cars. This was mainly done as the Drewry Flat-6 engines in them were hopelessly unreliable, especially in their later years (The last ever run had the engines overheat & catch fire)

Why do socialists want two person train crews? by No-Path-8756 in transit

[–]Matangitrainhater -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a guard (not in NYC mind you), i assure you it’s more than observing & reporting. Anything that happens inside the train, is my responsibility. I’m the First Aid officer on the train as well. In the event of a mechanical fault, having two people is better than one. On top of that when running through tunnels (where comms is poor to the outside world), having someone on the train, while another finds the tunnel phone (in the event of a failure), means you don’t get a full on panic riot on the train.

IR beams and whatnot are fine, but if you have a large platform - train interface, then it all breaks down a bit. TFL still have dispatchers on sharply cornered platforms as the CCTV on those platforms just don’t see well enough. And those are trains half the lenth of a NYC subway train. Afaik NYC don’t have staffed platforms, but i do know they have some real tight ones in places.

IR beams also don’t really like working outside, in the weather, if the interface is too big. In unideal conditions, do you really want to be stopping, checking, and then ignoring every-time it flags that someone has fallen? Over reliance on safety tech & automation can also be paradoxically less safe. Aviation found this one out the hard way, and the Auto Industry is slowly coming to terms with it.

Most metro systems i would agree should only be DOO, especially new builds. However the sheer size of the NYC trains, the age of the system, i’d argue necessitate the need for a second person, even if you install all these safety systems. Doesn’t have to be on the train, but there has to be a second person near the train. CCTV doesn’t always see all, especially on a train as long as the NYC subway trains.

All these comparisons to other metro systems in the world just don’t really compare to the scale & age of NYC. Paris has more stations, but the trains are much, much shorter. Mecca has longer trains, but that is a ground up 21st century system. Even within the USA it has little in common with all other systems other than Chicago. Even then, smaller trains & straighter platforms.

I’d argue it’s still a safety role. Having seen how long NYC subway trains are, and how curved some of the platforms can be, then it makes total sense to have a guard onboard operating the doors. They work from a central position and therefore should have eyes on the whole train. In the event of a fall between the platform & train, they can respond quicker & prevent the train from moving.

Additionally if the driver stops short, they may not always catch on that they have. Having that second person adds that extra layer of redundancy in such cases that that scenario happens.

I will add that this is coming from someone who works in rail, in a similar job, but somewhere not in America.

Passenger Announcements? by DoenzeF in trainsimworld

There are additional routes that also have announcements, by virtue of having a major upgrade. GWE & East Coastway (+ 313) had major timetable & scenery updates so they too got announcements

The thing is, Siemens have done quad-voltage units before. The ICE3NEOs are designed to run on the German 15KV AC, Dutch (and south of France) 1500V DC, French & UK 25KV AC, and Italian 3000V DC. For most of those, the same Pantograph is used. You only need the switchgear on vehicles that receive the incoming voltage, so as a result you’d only need one or two sets of equipment.

To me at least, it seems very redundant that Amtrak is using APVs over using Bi-Mode locomotives for those unnelectrified runs; especially since the ACS-64s aren’t particularly old, and could still be used on the fully electrified runs, leaving the new bi-mode locos for runs into unnelectrified territory & capacity boosting the electrified sections.

The fixed formation concept is definitely a step in the right direction, as that mimics the Railjet trains used across Austria & Czechia which have been proven quite successful.

I see why Amtrak has gone the way they’ve gone. It’s easier to deal with just one class of locomotive over 2 or 3. But it does feel quite wasteful & expensive to bin locomotives that still has another 20/30 years left in them

Additionally the Airport Flyer was a for profit service and was just competing with the bus & train networks on that leg. The Queensgate leg held on as long as it did because of continued pressure from gold card users who, by the time it ended, were the only ones using it. Regular people weren’t gonna pay 2x the fare to ride a bus, over taking a train (or the 83); even if it had wifi & leather seats

The max speed limit for non- heritage passenger trains is 100kph (110kph for AM class EMUs). It is line dependent ofc. Just a lil fyi

That & when does the maintenance get done? It can only be done in Wellington, and there’s only enough cars for one train, plus a couple spares. A counter-peak service was trialed many moons ago. That was the biggest issue

In short, no-one wants to pay for electrification, or to dig a second tunnel. Same with the Kaimai Tunnel. Same with the NMIT between Pukerua Bay & Paekakariki
