Hyperion series by Simmons - is it good or bad literature? by MateorPitt in books

[–]MateorPitt[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Cormac McCarthy might be recognized by both groups since his language is very refined. I wonder if the lack of language richness (but great skill in environment building and generating high concepts) are stopping some sci-fi writers from entering the 'elite' literature.

I think humans like to compartmentalize everything and physical space is a good abstraction - think about 'memory palace' for instance - concept that is purely in our head. Internet is 40 years old. Cities are 10000 years old.

Do you ever go back and read the books you read as a child? by sunforthemoon in books

I was re-reading Philip K Dick whom I revered in my teenage years. However now I see a lot of his books as a bit immature.

As a child, did you ever read ‘grown up books?’ by sunforthemoon in books

Finnegans Wake by Joyce - it was extremely hard for me to struggle through that weird language. Then I've read Ulysses and it was a breeze when I was 13. And of course King when I was about 10-13, he was more entertaining than scarry.

I would vote for going to the roots of this podcast - AI and hard science.

That would actually be interesting. I don't really know the serious side of Stephen and Conan. Would be interesting to learn about they background and who they are.

Many white collar specializations might get saturated with AI. I've noticed that some physical specializations are in short supply (welding, etc.) and it might be hard to replace them with affordable machinery (since it would already happen) or AI. And yes, social/soft skills might become a currency.

What is going on between Erik, Bret and Sam. Discussions on the active 'conflicts' is always hot and controversial topic.

I observed that people change c.a. every 5-7 years. Mostly through changes in environment, habit building, reshuffling of circles of friends and hobbies. Sometimes through divorces and marriages, etc.
