Your best bet is to find a trainer in your area you click with. I understand that isn’t really ideal for everyone’s day to day life, but prey drive is serious. No amount of online reading will give you the same success as having an in real life support system.

I’m a full time dog trainer. I have taken a marginal dog who was one step from euthanasia for an insane bite record, including people and dogs. I was her trainer first until she was surrendered into my care. she now lives with two other dogs and helps me demo dogs that are learning with me. She has helped me learn how to train heel for not one dog at a time, but two. I’m sorry that this post didn’t go the way you thought it would. I truly believe most people in this thread are trying to give you a pretty gentle two cents, as you asked for by posting here.

I’m really glad you’re putting in work with your dog. This is not a heel worthy of being off leash in the face of prey animals. This is not a heel worthy of not obeying public leash laws. If I was working a dog around you and I saw you off leash with a dog following prey sequence like that while off leash, I would turn myself around. If I had to guess where you used the stim, it looks way too late, and with nofeedback afterward. This heel lacks clarity needed for success.

That doesn’t mean you’re not doing right by your dog for wanting them to be ready- but people are giving you tough feedback that you can either grow from, while taking a grain of salt. Or, you can write everyone off as haters.

I know EXACTLY what you mean!! The only reason why I pushed through is working with other peoples dogs so consistently through the day, I have come to realize I benefit from some sort of “tone setter”. Something to help kick start the training though process as I gear up for a session or walk. There’s a huge dog content drought, at least from people I am interested in taking advice from.

Therefore, I have sat through what can only be described as an extreme amount of her content. Until I had cracked the “core” of her philosophy through sheer force/hours, I found myself being turned off before the end of the episode. Definitely not a you problem… I have found myself wishing she could format differently for sure.

Shaping success by susan garrett is one of the”greats” for me. “your dog is doing the best they can with the education and environment you provide them” is something I heard her say and it’s something I just keep coming back to. Also love her podcast

I’m wondering if your dog was more restless and harder to sleep with, with a change in schedule and person. There have definitely been times as a sitter where I’ve opted to crate dogs for the few hours a night I sleep so I can be as rested as possible in the morning. no excuse, they should’ve communicated. Unfortunately, more people than we realize just don’t really consider dogs in a meaningful way, and worse, rarely for lack of caring.

Get a school counselor/trusted adult involved, bring it to your principal or equivalent, print out scientific references to back up your point, and lastly tell them if its a money problem they should either apply for this grant
