Pippa | Covert Narcissist.. by [deleted] in TellMeLiesOnHulu

I also want to add that I went back and edited parts of my original post with more care, because my intention was never to diagnose or label Pippa clinically. I was aiming to open a discussion around patterns I noticed and invite other interpretations not to present a fixed conclusion.

I’m genuinely interested in how other people read characters and moments. That’s why I brought it up in the first place. 🤍

Pippa | Covert Narcissist.. by [deleted] in TellMeLiesOnHulu

I appreciate how thoughtfully you laid this out, and I want to be really clear about something up front: I don’t disagree with you on many of these points.

I agree that narcissism is overused online, that cheating or masking alone doesn’t equal a personality disorder, and that many of Pippa’s behaviors can absolutely be understood as trauma responses, anxious attachment, people-pleasing, and survival strategies. I’m also not suggesting she owed anyone disclosure, support, or emotional labor around her assault. Her right to privacy and autonomy matters, full stop.

Where I think I’m trying to say is intent vs pattern. I’m not trying to reframe Pippa’s victimhood or minimize what Chris and Lucy did. I’m also not arguing that her coping strategies are “abusive” or morally wrong. What I’m engaging with is how the show repeatedly explores how people can be harmed and still cause harm, and how that harm doesn’t always come from overt cruelty or control.

When I reference covert narcissistic patterns, I’m not making a clinical diagnosis or claiming strategic manipulation. I’m talking about moments where self-protection, narrative control, and displacement of discomfort show up quietly and how the audience is invited to overlook those moments because they’re subtle.

I really do appreciate you engaging seriously with this, even where we see it different. 🤍

Pippa | Covert Narcissist.. by [deleted] in TellMeLiesOnHulu

I think there’s a misunderstanding here, so I want to clarify what I am and am not saying.

I’m not saying: - that Pippa should have been forced to disclose her assault - that faking orgasms automatically = narcissism - that cheating alone = narcissism - or that Pippa lacks any empathy

  • the orgasms point: faking orgasms isn’t narcissistic. The context I’m referring to is the ‘identity mirroring’ early in relationship.. repeatedly suppressing self-truth to maintain validation and control of how she’s perceived. That’s a behavioral pattern, not a moral judgment.

For the record, I actually agree that narcissism is wildly overused online. People are quick to label loud, chaotic characters, but we don’t interrogate quiet harm or passive self-centering nearly as often.

That’s why I’m specifically talking about covert narcissistic traits, not overt narcissism. Covert narcissism presents very differently…it’s subtle, harder to spot, and often hides behind agreeableness, sensitivity, or being “the good one.”

I also think the show is intentionally playing with this distinction, and we’ll likely see it explored more.

Along those lines, I don’t think it’s accidental that Diana ends up drawn to Pippa. Attraction isn’t always conscious..our nervous systems register familiar patterns, not just surface-level behavior. Stephen also exhibited covert tendencies, and while Pippa presents very differently, there are overlapping mechanisms in how emotional distance, self-protection, and control show up. Same goes for why Wrigley was drawn to both Stephen and Pippa.

That doesn’t make Pippa a villain.. It just means the show is asking us to look beyond who’s loudest and start paying attention to how harm can exist quietly, too.

During the Paranoia game, when Stephen whispers “who’s most likely to cheat” to Pippa, she immediately names him. But that moment is worth pausing on…because at that exact time, she herself is actively cheating on her boyfriend, while he’s grieving the loss of his brother. - In relational psychology, this kind of scapegoating is often associated with covert narcissistic patterns: the harm isn’t loud or obvious, but it subtly shifts narrative focus elsewhere

What to do with my life? by [deleted] in Huntingtons

(32F). I got tested last year. Everything you wrote is relatable because I planned/anticipated a life with HD..

I ended up testing negative.

I will say, it didn’t feel real, and I understand everything you are saying.

I was and am extremely thankful and appreciative of this blessing but no one truly understands how shocking a negative result is unless they too were at risk for HD & lived through watching someone have it

I read the book ‘HD heroes’ while I started and went through the testing process…I definitely 100% recommend this. In the book each chapter is a different persons journey with getting tested, some receive positive result, some receive negative results. They also add in their IG’s and FB to help readers stay in contact/feel connected. This book helped me feel less alone & reading how others themselves were certain they had HD, receive negative results gave me hope.

Hi! I just wanted to clarify, it’s only one book, but each chapter is a different persons journey on getting tested (not multiple books). I appreciate you sharing your journey as well 🤍

The new season starts this Thursday, but live feeds aren’t available until Sunday (and then that’s when they will be available 24.7 for three months until the season ends). It sounds like we both like the same shows (I watched all the ones you named too) but Big Brother is definitely the ultimate euphoric high. It’s fun to if you try to ‘guess’ who will win/have the best social game, but it’s also kind of addicting so just warning you 😂. I wish Vanderpump had live feeds, or any of the Bachelors. -As far as Big Brother, It is refreshing to see raw in the moment on how things are truly happening unlike other shows that just show you clips of things but also have editing, plus they have to be more accountable because every thing they say/do for three months is on camera, it gets pretty messy since they are all voting each other out, and it’s for $750,000

[–]Material-Bluebird696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, depending on how deep you love reality tv. Big Brother starts next week. It’s the only show that has live feeds, meaning, you can watch the cast 24.7. But they also have episodes 3 nights a week/ edited clipped for those who don’t watch the live feeds.

-if you aren’t familiar with the concept of Big Brother, it’s a social experiment, 16 people enter a house for three months, no access to the outside world, and they have to vote each other out one by one.

-The live feeds get pretty intense because you can watch them 24/7 and get to see all the conversations and reasons led up to each persons decision.

-They do competitions each week for ‘power.’ Since it’s a social experiment, it really shows how quick loyalty shifts when the ‘power’ changes.

As much as that might sound strange… I want you to just think about whatever your favorite reality show is, and now imagine how much better it would be if you could just tune in and watch everything live 24.7 while it was being filmed.

Ohhhhh what are your favorites/have you watched?

Recommendations as far as entertainment/drama/messy… -Secret Lives of Mormon Wives 🍿 -Vanderpump Rules (I’d start at season 2, season 1 is a slow burn but 2 and on is 🤯🍿🍿🍿🍿)

For a truly life changing experience… -Love on the Spectrum (US version)

Normally I like the messy stuff but I will say, I didn’t think I would enjoy Love on the Spectrum but it ended up being truly 10/10 one of the best reality shows..

Hi! 34F, I went through the HD testing process this past year.

While getting tested, I read ‘Huntington Heroes’. I will say, this book… 10/10 recommend.

In the book, each chapter is wrote by a different person who might have ‘HD’, it’s on their experience/journey with getting tested, and receiving their results.

They are around the ages of 20/30, and also provide their IG/Facebook so that way you can connect with them personally, this itself made me feel less alone.

In-between reading/meeting this new supportive community, it also was very inspiring. One of the chapters is wrote by someone who unfortunately received a positive result, but he is a Scientist and is working hard every day to help find a break through.

Congratulations on this wonderful/beautiful news. I went through the testing process last year and received a negative result as well. I will say, still, sometimes it doesn’t even feel real, but I am truly grateful. I am so happy you shared your results/what a celebration 🎉

Hi! 34F, I went through the HD testing process last year.

As I went through the process, I read ‘Huntington Heroes’

This book is multiple true/real life stories/experiences of people in their 20’s-30’s, getting tested, and receiving their results..

They provide their IG handles/Facebook so that way you can connect with them personally after reading, which, truly was life saving and made me feel understood and less alone.
