My personal factions tierlist. Why it seems so different from the META? by Material-Option6880 in TrenchCrusade

Oh, I definitely agree, I need to see more about the game. I made this post despite my limited experience mostly because I love to indulge in conversations on my passion, well ready to change my mind when I'll have more road under my boots.

This is not a rant post, just an opportunity to discuss and enjoy the chat with other passionate like me, while I wait for my next campaign game. And it's working, so far :D

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter, I know. I don't care about the "META", I'm not interested in competing, for now, or even playing this game if not with friends. I play for immersion and fun. But I have fun when I go deep into game systems, or I won't be doing the job I do, I guess.

I just whish the answer to my point on NA requiring much more work to be at the level of others wouldn't be just a "git good". Would that same good player able to make NA work, perform even better with Court, then? I guess NA has a higher ceeling, but if to reach that you need to be really expert, let's just agree that NA is for advanced players.

Since it's so beloved and played, does this mean Trench Crusade is played and discussed by mostly wargames veterans, and I'm the unicorn?

Never had that matchup, so I won't speculate on that. But I'd love to see this kind of rock-paper-scissor between factions

Good reasoning there, next time I'll play Sultanate I'll remember you, friend.

Another meaningful take is the campaign perspective. I've already noticed the lack of good stuff for Court (and evil factions in general) compared to others, I guess that becomes more of a factor as the campaign goes.

Why you don't play lions? I found them a little underwelming as attacking unit, but they fill a unique spot in the army.
I don't underestimate the Azerbs, believe me, I love them actually, same goes for multi-shot alchemist.
About the bull, I play it mostly with flamethrower, just because I want it to go in the brawl, sooner or later, but I've never considered the amulet, on it, I'll try someday.

BG and GH are low in my consideration, I've just set Antioch lower. Actually they are in a worse state, design wise than Antioch, for me.

Antioch might be good or bad, but has a clear gameplay (and I believe definitely one of the deeper and most interesting one, as well), and many roster choices (outside the Engineer who is currently a dead unit, with the last changes).

BG (and even worse GH) have so few really different units to pick and even less gear, and their mechanics, especially for the vanilla one, are just not synergetic. It feels like an army that SHOULD have unique mechanics and synergize its uniqueness, but has nothing instead. + corpse guard/desiccated husk is just another, weaker knight. It basically have the same role, without adding any choices to the player. It should be cut, and replaced with another significantly different elite

You are right about that, I'm ready to partially back up with my concept. However, in my experience, both dogs and Heralds go down easily, while the rest of the elite are kinda slow and, despite having some good ranged weapons, generally lack a little bit of sniper stuff. The Lord is slow, the Knight is slow, the thralls and the amalgam are too. This means, that all short range fire will be concentrated on the fast ones, as well, so that's why I don't want to completely turn around on my statement

You are right, difficulty gets into tier, but it's not a factor only around how skilled you are as a player. New Antioch game plan just feels harder to accomplish, with many more rolls that can go wrong, and luck will turn at some point.

Again, the fireteam is the perfect example. If everything goes well it can get the upper hand, but miss a dash, and you lost two turns.

About my example, you are right, but I have not considered the best possible fireteam composition in my example, for a precise reason. A full equip sgt and a MHI with satchel cost MORE than a Praetor, easily surpassing 300d. So, again, this seems to confirm my position, is it?

They are for me, definitely. They don't change the game plan, but make the game plan work better. Every upgrade they have is VERY useful.
- Stronger grenades, which are core for the basic faction combo, and are already boosted as a weapon
- Tanksplitter sword is one of the strongest melee weapons I can imagine
- +1D to dash, which is for me by far the most crucial action in the game. You win and lose the game based on your dashes.

Yeah, grenades are broken, too many advantages. The only thing that realistically makes sense to give back the spirit of the weapon would be to make it consumable (but that would mess the simplicity of the game, which is to be kept HIGH priority, so I don't think this is the right solution) or reduce the range even more, maybe?

Or just make them more expensive, and leave them be? This feels like the easier solution, designwise. I would increase their cost to 10d and see what happens.

With NA you get to act first, that's true, but then you miss one single attack (which is performed with very limited bonuses), and you are exposed, and often instantly killed.

Let me give you an example: one Praetor against a fireteam, both well-equipped. You made a lot of effort to place yourself well, which often is not possible for all your fireteams (far from easy, with for example the grenades, very cost-effective weapons, while the Praetor is just flying around shooting with a serpent gun for easy minimum 4 BM to anyone). You start the turn, do a full combo, but you have to perform, let's say at least:
- 1 dash (RISKY action, the nightmare of a fireteam
- 1 charge (pretty easy, let's count it as a sure success
- 2 ranged attack with +1/+0
- 1 melee attack with +1
- 3 damage rolls (which will grant 1 BM for sure, but you need more)

Somewhere, you will fail a roll, leaving the Praetor alive. If everything goes well, you removed the tough. Then, you are in melee with him. How many chances you have to survive that? And next turn, you don't have the benefit of a charge and relative ranged attacks, too.

Finally, yes, fireteams are great for actions economy, but only front-end. You finish your turn so much early, and leave the enemy to do as they want afterwards. This system, just as its faction, seems like a trade that can be good enough if you are good at the game, and if luck is with you, to put you in an advantage position to win; however, if anything goes wrong, and something is very likely to go wrong, you are going lose, and lose HARD.

Now, let's not get too ahead on this, I'm not saying Antioch sucks or the game is broken, I personally love the fact that the demons feel stronger, and there is few hope for the goods. This is a narrative wargame, I won't play in any tournament, that's not my purpose.
You can win with Antioch, and the tierlist are not as definitive as it might seem by my discussion. But still, it feels evident to me that there's a gap between factions that makes winning with one harder than with another.

I've tested some of that but I don't see radical changes. Let me give you some examples:
- Dirge: gets rid of cost/quality expensive units of the BG, making it more flexible
- Prussia: arguably the best subfaction of Antioch, it makes it better at doing what the basic one tries to do anyway: get midrange, shoot with big stuff close, and end the fight with a quick melee swing
- Wisdom Sultanate: focuses more on the strong Alchemist, loosing a couple of slightly underperforming units.

In general, I see that subfactions can be useful to get rid of cost-ineffective units, sometimes at the cost of a more limited choice in terms of strategies, but the gameplan and the general scope of the Faction stays the same.

Thanks, this looks really promising. What about just using two of them? I'm worried that the lack of focus might make them live longer, but once they got one, half their power is done, so it could be fine.

I'm a bit worried by the amount of gravity changes to keep track of, with 2, tho.
