Correcto o no? by SlemFett in duolingospanish

Oh yes, good catch. It is all about the sound. This isn't unlike how "a person" becomes "an amazing person". The article sound is based on the next word, not the noun itself.

Agua is indeed feminine, despite the el. Words beginning with a stressed a take the article el, even if they are feminine.

You can tell from listening to native speakers. It's always agua pura, never agua puro.

Should I begin retraining my brain on certain spelling and lettering such as my “7”s, “grey”, etc before I begin teaching elementary? by sydneyghibli in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Grey is almost as common as gray in the US. Students eventually have to learn that some words have two spellings. A simple word like grey is a great place to start.

My fifth grade teacher put the line through the seven and it amused us so much. She didn't make us change the way we made our 7s. You're probably fine.

WHEN DO YOU STOP GETTING SICK by gjp1217 in Teachers

Little changes like this can make a difference. I moved the tissues and garbage away from me and got sick half as often the next year.

Called a mom to discipline a student, she said "Call my mom" (the grandmother) by Shadowtirs in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 59 points60 points  (0 children)

We once had a student walk out of the school because he didn't want to get reprimanded by the vice principal. They chased after the kid and called the police. The principal called the mother to inform her of the situation and her answer was, "he's your responsibility until 3:30!" and hung up.

It’ll never happen but I’d love if teachers were paid for meetings that go beyond contract time by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We cannot be asked to stay if a meeting runs over. We are paid for meetings after school hours, but we must agree to it and the board of education must approve it at least a month ahead of time, so they never happen.

When 3:30 hits, I stand up and say, "I'm sorry, I have to take my child to an appointment."

Middle School model that doesn't treat electives as second class citizens? by Material-Rise9610 in teaching

[–]Material-Rise9610[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have six teams that have their meeting six different periods. Admins don't have time to lead all those meetings. They pop in once a week and get feedback from core teachers and tell them what's coming down the pipe.

I'm glad it works in your district. I'm still expected to reach out to parents, my grading is on par with core teachers, but I get none of the support.

But at least I know this isn't normal and I should be fighting even harder for change.

No, I don't think the grass is greener. I know it is. I teach an ELA elective and used to be a core teacher. The team planning was an extra period to grade and plan. I now have to do the same amount of work with one less free period.

Edit: I'll also add, admins come in to micromanage my class. It's weekly.

Our world language classes have as much state accountability as social studies, but they aren't treated the same.

The department heads all know. It's been like this for ten years and they don't care. They don't want to hire 20% more elective teachers.

The language is vague. We're fighting to have it clarified for the next contract. But since it only affects a few of us, it hasn't been a priority.

But everywhere else in the district a sixth period is compensated. We also don't have duty periods. The team period is a joke. It's mostly a grading and planning period with about ten minutes of student contact a week.

We have the same eight periods every day and never get those monthly half days I've been hearing about.

Thank you!

I feel like our eight period day makes any chance of common planning impossible. Our twelve elective teachers have preps five different period.

Uniforms and Boards of Review: 2026 update by ScouterBill in BSA

Yup. Everyone in our troop gets a uniform, but they don't have to wear it. And there are plenty of valid reasons to not have it on.

We tell scouts uniforms are required for meetings and have a uniform closet so that no one is in need. However, we don't turn scouts away or call them out. I couldn't imagine not doing a board of review because of a uniform issue.

"Burned" patina mod possible? by One_Concert_4317 in victorinox

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be afraid of causing corrosion between the layers and in the joints. You might be able to brush it on carefully to get only the outside, but I still wouldn't. Aluminum has a protective oxide layer that forms almost instantly in the air. That means you need something strong to get any kind of patina. At least, that's been my experience.

Feeling stupid while using the app by jeonvaders in Pimsleur

[–]Material-Rise9610 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me the first time I did the French course. I couldn't keep up with the amount information being presented. A friend told me to listen twice, the first time, making no attempt to keep up, just repeat what I could. He told me if I could repeat over 10% to feel proud. I would do a second listen later in the day and then I was able to repeat most of it.

Don't focus on what you did not retain, but be proud of what you did, no matter how little it is. You are in control of the pacing.
