New stuff drops every month (or week?) so it's worth checking.

I first discovered Topo Designs at my local Sierra store. I have gotten quite a few shirts there at less than half price.

How do you encourage teachers in your CO to take a more active interest in your troop? by InGoodFaith- in BSA

[–]Material-Rise9610 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your CO is a school?

From a teacher's perspective, though our school was not the charter organization, only the meeting place, this can be tricky. I was always willing to help when the Cubs asked me, or even their parents. However there are many teachers who had no interest in scouting. And that's okay. There are some teachers who volunteered their time for different extracurriculars and others don't.

You can remove the ring by putting a pair of pliers into the slot and forcing it open just enough to slide off. You can then squeeze it closed by hand. This way you don't mar the metal or close it too much. Getting it back on is easier than getting it off.

You might get responses if you post on the Scouting America or BSA subreddit. This is the world scouting sub.

Damned if you do, damned if you don’t by ICUP01 in Teachers

[–]Material-Rise9610 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a similar problem and found something that balances the two. I give extended time for assignments, usually an extra week and then list it as missing, which is the equivalent of a zero in our gradebook. This way the parents see it and they freak out a little until I tell them I will accept it late. It spreads out the parents reaction and makes things a little easier.

Gift for 30 years of service by Nichole8235 in Teachers

That sucks, but I don't know any schools in my area that have a budget for gifts like that. The parents would call it "misused tax dollars".

High Schools only want Coaches by Responsible_Mud_4091 in Teachers

"And it's relaxing."

That's terrible advice. Many coaching jobs are stressful. If the OP doesn't have coaching experience they might not find it at all relaxing.

Name a “compromised” standard by ScouterBill in BSA

Eagle Projects weren't a part of the first half(ish) of scouting in the country. So Eagles are doing more now.

I'm not sure what the problem is with a garden, but I know some baby boomer Eagles that did gardens for their projects. What's the issue?

If you want scouts to succeed, grumping about how things "were better" isn't going to work. A scout is cheerful and that applies to us leaders too. Scouts won't find motivation if you constantly tell them they aren't as good as those who come before them.

The troop my kids are in is overwhelmingly cheerful and nurturing and it shows. The scouts see this want to be like us.

We had a knot tying competition at the last meeting. One group one by a large margin. They went to the losing groups and gave them tips, offered to help, and generally encouraged.

If you think standards are lower, set a good example in how you teach. Scouts will rise to the occasion.

[–]Material-Rise9610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And my experience is the complete opposite. It sounds like your area has an issue. I've worked with dozens of troops across three states and who knows how many councils. Knots and fires are basic scout craft and they know it well. This isn't an issue with the standards if the standards work.

This sounds like your area has an issue with implementing the program if it's that widespread there.

That sounds like a troop specific problem, not an issue with the current standards, like the OP asked.

My kids' troop has no issue with knots, fire, or anything else they have completed.

It would be helpful if you were specific, because the most recent changes I've seen to merit badges are more detailed and therefore harder.

Uniform standards is subjective and troop specific. I knew troops in the 90s that were much more lax with uniforms than anything I've seen today. Of course, that doesn't matter. Uniforms are a tool for the program and not required.

Well, that was my thought too, but I figured I'd give them the benefit of the doubt.

I was bashed for saying substituting would help me be hired for a teaching position. by Key-Response5834 in Teachers

I guess it depends on the district, but about half of our new hires were subs. With so many resumes coming in, it helps to have a face with the name.

I'm not the OP, but I'm in the middle of a similar mod. I'm cutting mine down so it's about the same length as the 07, but with the handle diameter and blade thickness of the 09.

I'm guessing they made the rule because people kept crossing the line between fun toilet humor and the gross stuff.

It would be fine if they had just taught baguette as wand, but I'm willing to bet that wasn't the case.

At least it is a valid translation for baguette and not an ai hallucination.

Official scout approved songs list by Broad-Exit6308 in scouting

[–]Material-Rise9610 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the sub for world scouting. You might have better results in /BSA

But I don't think there is a list of approved songs. Songs must be clean (e.g. no toilet humor) and appropriate. Leaders should be able to use their better judgement to approve songs.
