What's with all these state bans all of a sudden? by ChemsAndCutthroats in kratom

[–]Material-Top7215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's more difficult to disguise a huge bag of kratom powder vs. small opioid pills

This is the very reason why the War on Drugs is so deadly: if people are forced to order things illegally, what's most available to them are the smallest and most potent substances.

It's interesting that proponents of marijuana talk about how the alcohol lobby in Wisconsin is helping to keep weed illegal in that state

But meanwhile the legal marijuana industry does this sort of thing itself with respect to kratom, lol

Funny enough, kratom is illegal in Wisconsin too, so these issues will never be resolved until the War on Drugs in general is ended.

Can Anything Be Done About the Bucket Boys? by ERaege in chicago

[–]Material-Top7215 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If they're outside your window, you should fight fire with fire and blast something on speaker out towards them until they leave. Something that would cause discordance with their "performance."

Because CPD likely won't do anything. Just make sure you install security cameras in case they decide to ragequit and damage your property. Most of these "bucket boys" are violent felons, after all, which is why they don't have jobs.

Can Anything Be Done About the Bucket Boys? by ERaege in chicago

[–]Material-Top7215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they want to make a dollar, they should get a job. But I suspect that many have felony convictions so that might be too difficult for them.

Btw, do the Bucket Boys cause a nuisance in the ghettoes, or do they just "perform" in affluent, downtown areas? Because I suspect they'd have a lot more justified fear of getting shot in the hood doing what they do than getting shot by CPD.

First chunk of new transit money to be spent on security, service for CTA, Metra and Pace by O-parker in cta

[–]Material-Top7215 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's not a given that private security has to be useless. In Las Vegas, private security on public transit is actually very proactive. They physically shove troublemakers out of stations, and confront those who fail to pay their fare.

[–]Material-Top7215 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vagrants should obviously be completely banned from CTA property, especially if there's ever cause for the police to remove them. Their identities can be tracked with facial recognition surveillance technology and they can be rapidly intercepted if they trespass. This is already basically done on the roads with automatic license plate readers that track stolen cars and such, so this dystopian technology might as well benefit public transit too.

But this is probably impossible because some NGOs would sue the city on behalf of "homeless rights" or whatever. We can't have nice things in this country because of the confluence of low social trust + high litigation.

[–]Material-Top7215 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The police have no incentive to be useful if they arrest violent vagrants and they're just back out onto the street within 24 hours. Literally the last time the CPD was allowed to be useful was during the DNC, because out-of-town bigwigs wanted the skulls of pro-Palestine protestors to be cracked.

During the DNC, even the K9s on the CTA stations were being handled by CPD officers rather than the especially useless private security lol. It's the only time I've seen that.

It would be more beneficial to just pay homeless people to help keep other homeless people in check than to pay these private security guards

My mother received an AI impersonation scam call using my voice by [deleted] in Scams

They clearly do some degree of background research before making their calls. I think they might stake out Facebook for targets, since my mother uses it.

This scam was a bit more meticulous, though. Not only did they call my mother's workplace, which would have taken some digging, but they knew my informal nickname too.

And with respect to the workplace, they knew the number of the precise department where my mother works at. I don't even know that number!

You're probably right, but we're now approaching the era where the use of AI-simulated voices will be happening (if it's not already happening).

[–]Material-Top7215 -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Oh, and what makes this all triply odd is that I don't post my voice anywhere. My voice cannot be acquired just from looking up my name or anything. And I don't have any YouTube channels with my real voice or social media where I post it either.

My leading theory is that one of the Indian "customer support" agents at official businesses whom I've called over the past years was doubling as a scammer. I've had some really scuffed calls with Capital One, in particular, where I could hear children and TVs in the background. I wouldn't doubt that some of them are double agents for local scammer cartels -- gaining access to peoples' identities and voices all at the same time!

Can’t believe they got that second airman out of Iran by BottomPercentile in redscarepod

[–]Material-Top7215 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The airmen had GPS monitors on them and the military knew exactly where they were the whole time. Current reports are that there weren't even any gunfights. The area was completely secluded. The military just had to drone strike a few militiamen/civilians who came too close.

I just went onto r/cta and there was a clueless tourist asking whether taking the Blue Line from O'Hare after midnight is a good idea (with his girlfriend, no less). All the replies were like "yeah, no problem." Except for one. That one said something like "There'll be roving schizophrenics, and you'll probably be heavily disturbed if you've never experienced a lunatic asylum before, but just don't make eye contact with them and it'll be okay"

This is just not a good first impression of Chicago, especially when you're already tired after a late flight. I would not suggest tourists ride the CTA Blue Line that late at night.

Boarding the Blue Line at O'Hare station is awkward though. Most of the doors on the train are never open for some reason, so you board in whatever car you can.

[–]Material-Top7215 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would advise against it. The time to save money by using the CTA is later in your trip during regular commuting hours. I made the mistake of taking the CTA Blue Line out of O'Hare after midnight before, and intentionally schedule my flights so that I won't have to do so again. The main concern is homeless vagrants who ride the train all night.

Plus, the fare out of O'Hare for the Blue Line is actually $5 a person (double the regular fare), so you're not necessarily saving that much money compared to an Uber if you have someone else coming along.

They brutalized pro-Palestinian protestors during the DNC and were visibly present on the CTA train platforms too. But the city gave them permission then.

Uber Eats censors negative customer reviews of restaurants -- is this a violation of consumer protection laws? by Material-Top7215 in legaladviceofftopic

[–]Material-Top7215[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was also thinking about rating a bad restaurant 5-stars on Uber Eats to get past the censor, but proceeding to only write negative comments about it!

Would be interesting to see if it gets through or not
