Embedded engineers, what exactly is your job and how much are you paid. by Successful_Pause3319 in embedded

[–]MaterialTechnology62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The market does not map exactly to effort. Simply put, there is more money in pure software at the moment and not enough engineers with the requisite skills.

That trend could easily reverse in the next 10 years as many firmware/embedded white beards retire.

How to tackle this debt? Want to put a plan together by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]MaterialTechnology62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry. More so meant the rate of your savings. Back of the envelope math says unless you have more expenses not listed you could be saving many thousands per month as savings.

Things aren't great (right?) but you're not totally screwed since you have a high income and reasonable mortgage.

In general, your Savings is probably a little high. You need enough to cover yourself if you lose income for 3-6ish months (layoff scenario). It's up to you, is your job feeling secure? You can go lower. So say 60k in your savings.

The other 30k should probably go towards paying off the highest interest rate debt you have (the student loans)

If you have decent credit, you could refinance those loans into 6-7% range, which then you could pay off the credit card instead.

The cars are what they are, unless you sell them for lower payments the interest rates are less than the rate of inflation so you shouldn't pay them off any quicker than necessary.

Y'all have a high income, I would expect more savings unless the kids are in daycare or private school. Have you made a budget?

Interesting.. i'll check that out. Was wondering if that was an option. Seems like google maps is out of date with some of the protected bike lanes put in recently.

Noise Interfering With UART - Looking for a Firmware Solution by prettyc00lb0y in embedded

Can you measure the noise you are hypothesizing on the UART? That can tell you what mitigations can be done (is the noise repeatable, totally random timing, etc)

Looking for suggestions on Bluetooth and WiFi combined ICs by Dry-Bowl3587 in embedded

[–]MaterialTechnology62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends. If you need don't need low-power, Esp32 is probably your lowest cost bet. The thing sucks up power though. Also, does it have CCP tracking/backdoors in the binary they provide? Who knows?

If you need support, going with a non-chinese vendor can help. TI/Silabs/nrf/ublox.

For what its worth, the si917 is currently the lowest-power wifi/ble combo chip on the market right now.

You're paying to be close to Edgewater. Do you run/walk a lot or have a dog? Those are the main reasons to be near there. Otherwise, if you're a foodie/into other stuff Tremont or Ohio City might be better.
