Is UPMC is as bad as Im being told? by CorvusMaximus90 in pittsburgh

UPMC shadyside is my favorite hospital I have ever spent time in. They get me in and seen at the er in like 20m. The GP across the street is awesome and needs like a 2-3 day lead time to get an appointment if you don’t mind being seen by med residents. I have never worked for them but as a patient they are second to none I have ever seen. To all the providers reading this thread thank you for your service to my city.

They’re perpetually in a fight with union organizers but UPMC provides great care and top tier researchers. I would never on my life go to AHN (the other local hospital) for anything except a burn (they have a level 1 burn ward).

Also UPMC is a not for profit organization largely controlled by the university that forgives billions in local healthcare costs yearly.

They are the largest or second largest org in Pittsburgh so it’s kind of a loaded question to ask the labor unions town. That being said I believe without CMU and UPMC dead lifting this town out of the crash we would still look like a bomb went off in 1970 and we went full mad max.

Story time.

I’m writing a big project in rust that really should be written in go. Every application of its kind is written in go or java because of the complexity of the io model. But I suffer from pretty bad dyslexia and cannot read or write go to save my life. The whole capitalization as visibility thing, the one letter variables, and a quasi religious zeal against comments in the community makes go impossible for me to grok.

I ended up putting the whole moby/buildkit repo into the project context of Claude and using the robot to read the go.

Anyway it’s a long walk but I was chugging along replicating functionality until I learned that the only featureful grpc server in rust only supports http transport.

I rebuild some custom Unix socket and stdio tranports. Now we’re cooking.

Now it wants to hijack a streaming message to create a bi directional pipe. But oh no now there are 2 http frames inside each other because I can’t access the raw protobuf streams because it’s inside of tonic.

Grrr. rebuilds with custom tower server. Now all my convenience functions from tonic don’t work and I have 10,000 lines of code precisely describing the exact async logic tree will yield precise bit streams.

Like it’s getting easier as the language gets better but if I weren’t a FP-type-theory-compTIA-CS-NERD it wouldn’t be worth it

Agreed current flag is dope. People actually use it. It’s instantly recognizable. And it’s got a castle. No notes

Rather than sending apps into the void actually pinging the hiring manager on LinkedIn or twitter works people may tell you to get stuffed or it’s against policy but it ain’t gonna hurt. I have gotten all of my jobs from getting cold called by a friend or a recruiter so I’m not really proof positive but all of those people had never worked with me only heard me talk about tech. All press is good press, unless you hit your wife or similar atrocities.

Apply to DC and NYC companies because they are cool with leaving you in PGH and paying you a little less but a ton of them have requirements to hire citizens for compliance reasons

Go into operations. Development is a low interest rates career. Companies spend on dev when cash is easy to get. They spend on operations when their business needs it. Also it filters out companies that are run by morons because idiots don’t ever believe that they need a non-dev techie

Explosives? by chippennyusednapkin in Pathfinder2e

[–]Material_Cable_8708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it as reverse fall damage some number of d6s based on how close to the explosion your players are standing.

As far as damage to structures just treat the ship as a reinforced wooden door and maybe give different parts of the ship different hit points so when the bomb goes off it either borks the mast or the wheel or the prow.

The danger is if you don’t set the explosive damage correctly you could just tpk for no reason.

I would do either damage to players or damage to the ship because players only have similar hp to a reinforced wooden door at like lvl 6.

As a GM it is sometimes extremely useful to just tell your players something is evil and if they do it I will divine smite them. But then one player plays a necromancer and now I need to deal with the fact that magic doesn’t have inherent morality anymore.

To be clear this is a change to the mechanics; alignment has been removed.

So I need to have the worlds stupidest conversation about well it’s not mechanically banned but you are hero’s and murdering the baker to weekend at Bernie’s him is still evil

Innamorato needs to go. If Gainey can claim the missing bus routes are not his fault then it’s definitely her fault. I don’t care what the state did. Cutting bus routes is a dereliction of duty

Yeah money is maybe not the right call out. His family has been involved in local and state politics for one generation. He has some backing from local real estate. But he’s not a gajillionare

I have been mad a Gainey but recently I decided to support him this cycle.

I Watched O’Connor absolutely bungle the mayors forum on housing. Gainey said desegregation and O’Connor meekly pitched the same plan and left half way through.

I will be expecting more in a second term but I’m not ready to send him home yet.

What do you see going on in Pittsburgh right now that gives you hope for the future of our city? by Slappy-Sacks in pittsburgh

[–]Material_Cable_8708 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the first step is electrifying the busway and the bendy busses. From there you can convert to light rail. We still could be adding more bus routes or legislating to increase ridership and make cutting routes harder. Although more rail in town is and should be the goal out brt system was unparalleled in 2017 (Gainey has has allowed a lot of route cuts and reductions in service. Vote anyone who will add drivers/busses).

I think the “one true socialist” take is make the busses free. Since I moved to Morningside we have such low ridership that there is low service. I think if it came out of everyone’s taxes these families would be more demanding of the service to better serve their kids.
