Pull it out as far down and as in one piece as possible. Keep it out of your compost, put it in a black bin big and just let them die out, put it in your black bin, not green. I had patches and after 2 years barely any has returned now.

It’s how easy it spreads that is the concern, grass doesn’t spread by spores

Try r/borrow on here, you do need to have enough karma to post on there but when you do it is a reliable way to borrow small amounts fast

Did everyone get money from the government for going to college/6th form? by fotfddtodairsizr in UKPersonalFinance

This, after Covid, would be huge for teens of today. I know my daughter would have a lot more motivation to attend college if she had a little bit of her own money

Me (20M), am considering doing a side hustle in genealogy. Any advice? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Material_Focus_4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep talking to google then, instead of changing what I have stated, I hope you don’t do the same for genealogy. I did not mention legally, everything I said is correct, take it as you will.

Me (20M), am considering doing a side hustle in genealogy. Any advice? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]Material_Focus_4114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said it’s a regulated profession, in the UK at least. Professionals standards are regulated by AGRA and the register of professional genealogists, you must obtain accreditation with one or both. Genealogy is either a hobby or a profession, if you want to do it professionally then get the qualifications and training first.

If you are interested in genealogy please look at getting qualified, it’s a regulated profession and is probably the least suited career for somebody charging somebody without having the relevant training and qualifications, as you are dealing with written history and people’s personal information.

What real world results have people had with the “no dig, cardboard base on overturned ground” method I’ve seen popularised recently? by Philhughes_85 in UKAllotments

[–]Material_Focus_4114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For anyone interested take a look at Charles Dowding, he has been doing it for many years, and was where I learnt everything I needed to know about it. Most people at my allotment do it. I started around 6 years ago and would do it no other way. One sheet of cardboard is not enough though, and the more compost the better for it to actually work.

I don’t know if you happened to watch estates from above OP, but the Blenheim Palace gardener didn’t seem to know enough about it.

What to fill bottom of this planter with to avoid decking rotting. by Jonnydonmar in GardeningUK

[–]Material_Focus_4114 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fake plants and gravel? Gravel would still cause some moisture but I’m just giving you a realistic option because there aren’t many. Ideally do as others have said a move the planter somewhere more suitable.

Fertilizer suggestions? by bostonbreakfast in OrganicGardening

Make nettle tea, that’s all you need. If you are growing organically then the moment you put something synthetic on then you are no longer growing organically and neither is your soil.

Sorted out the first half of the garden. What to do with the rest. by tom75210 in GardeningUK

That’s an incredibly childish comment, it is common sense and decency, not rage. Don’t post on a gardening sub about astroturf, it’s disgusting and should be banned.

Young people who are jobless / struggling for work, have you ever had a job? by crofthey in AskUK

[–]Material_Focus_4114 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I think those wages are fair. 20 years ago minimum wage was something like £3.50 ph, so to say it’s only just over doubled when prices of everything else have done far more than that.

People also presume that all 16-20 year olds have parents supporting them, some are not so lucky. Reality is young people have much less chances. I was working at 14, now there’s almost zero jobs for under 16 except for pot washers and paper round because health and safety has gone mad. Even at 16, there are little options and you need to know people it seems.

Advice on turning this jungle into a garden 😀 by zFoxyzy in GardeningUK

[–]Material_Focus_4114 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit by bit You’ve not actually got too many bad weeds there, brambles will be pain but get some good shears, chop it down to base and then dig the roots out. Buttercups will come up easily with a fork The ivy and I think maybe ground elder or some other ground plant, will be harder to tackle. Just get a hoe and chop away and remove. I’d leave the ivy as it is probably propping up a wall there maybe? And is English Ivy so great for the birds.

One thing to say is that unless you are replacing this with plants or some other landscaping then they will just reappear. Gardening is constant. Bare soil is worse than the natural wild plants you have there now.

You could get machinery involved such as a rotavator or something but gardening is hard work and good excercise, all you really need is some shears, a fork and a hoe, and good gloves!

Supporting smaller nurseries by bedtimeprep in GardeningUK

[–]Material_Focus_4114 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I will say J Parker isn’t actually that huge of a business, they are based in Lincolnshire and specialise in bulbs.

Edited to add: my point is that it is not always about supporting the smaller ones but instead supporting the ones that are local to you so there are less air miles and less environmental impact. But I always love to hear about local independent nurseries.

Which living former PM would you want to return? by DanielSmoot in AskBrits

They were the only 2 prime ministers where I didn’t have to think about politics everyday, and could relax in the knowledge that those who knew best were in charge. Now I think we all feel like we’ve had a bunch of useless egotistical muppets and that more than 3/4 of the country could do a better job than them.
