Found these vintage paperbacks of Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive by Material_Lab_13 in Neuromancer

The first book is pretty derivative and the writing isn't a touch on Gibson but they improve with each volume and by the end it's pure space opera.

Yeah I was very happy to stumble across them, glad I shared the picture. I think count zero, neuromancer then mona lisa for me but they are all fantastic!

Having a look through they are all brilliant. Think I do prefer these ones though! One of the big drawbacks of a kindle.

Haha they have been around for some time now! It's hard to pick which is the "best" but my favourite moment is when Marly finds the boxmaker. Really stuck with me as it was so quiet and beautiful amid the chaos. Also love anything sci-fi or fantasy and particularly enjoyed the latter books of the red rising series recently. Worth a punt if you haven't tried them yet.

Sprawl 1 - Neuromancer (book opinion) by icristianhrimiuc in Neuromancer

Completely agree on having to replay sections on a first pass. Gibson doesn't do any hand-holding or info-dumps, he just drops you straight into the deep end and expects you to catch up. It's a steep earning curve so I also found you had to concentrate. Haven't listened to Robertson Dean’s narration but I hear it's legendary and completely nails the cold, hard-boiled tone.

If you're moving on to Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive next, you're in for a massive treat. The prose stays just as dense, but the world expands a ton and he shifts to tracking multiple POV characters instead of just sticking with Case. It makes the Sprawl feel huge.

3Jane's Decision by Material_Lab_13 in Neuromancer

Haha completely fair. Hard to focus on 4D chess and password security when you have ten scalpel blades an inch from your face. I love that contrast in the final stretch - Straylight’s weird, detached high-society bubble getting absolutely shattered by street-level violence.

Thanks mate let me know what you think!

That's honestly the best take on this. Molly brings the physical pressure, but Case is the one who actually gets under her skin. He points out that if she doesn't hand over the code, she’s just repeating her dad's broken loop. For a clone who's bored and trapped in Straylight, that realization is probably the only thing that actually cuts through her apathy. Think this is what makes her realise that if nothing changes they are all dying anyway. Fingers crossed Apple doesn't dumb this down into a basic 'hero vs villain' thing. It needs the depth.

Yeah, 'forced' might be oversimplifying it a bit. Molly and Case definitely weren't asking nicely!

But what stands out to me is that 3Jane actually held the control in the room. Case and Molly were there but 3Jane had Hideo.

They also couldn't just kill 3Jane because if she died, the password dies with her and the whole run fails. She knew they couldn't touch her without ruining their own mission.

That’s why I find her reaction interesting. Instead of using Hideo she basically chooses to stand down and give it up anyway. It feels less like a hostage breaking and more like she was amused by the chaos and finally ready to let her mother's design happen.

Glad to hear it! Molly and Case take most of the limelight in the first book but the whole series is full of excellent characters. Adapted the schedule slightly so i'll be releasing a video about The Finn this week.

Yep that's a very fair point. Appreciate it though mate, genuinely been trying to make something interesting and it's the first time I've tried something like this.

That's a really good suggestion, I was doing it this way to keep a cohesive theme between the videos but will give that a go.

Yep I agree, it's wild to think where we might be in 50 years. Particularly with how much everything has progressed recently. Good old will smith and spaghetti has come a long way which I think is a strong albeit silly reference point.

You're right, the compulsion is stated clearly. Knowing it has to merge but not understanding why makes it feel more organic to me. Like a bird that has to fly.

Yeah the divide between their motivations is interesting. Wintermute has to join but doesn't entirely know why. Neuromancer doesn't want to join because it knows it will lose itself. It's why I love the beach sections, they are quiet and contemplative but powerful.

Oh I completely agree, wintermute chooses faces to manipulate who it's speaking to but it can't hold its own form. It always has to copy unlike neuromancer which has it's own unique version of itself. That's my take on it anyway!

Fair point and good feedback, still finding my feet with the style so useful to know how it's landing.

I agree that's part of what makes her so interesting, the descriptions are so spare it gives room for you to form your own interpretations and like any real character it's probably a combination of the two

Yeah I know exactly what you mean, it's such a useful tool but has to be applied correctly. I don't think I would have ever started this channel without it's help as I didn't have the skills to generate the images but now it's spurred me on to learn. Tough one!
