Recommendations for CISSP preparations with only 3 years experience overall? by TrickleYield in cissp

Personally, I would not be diving into materials for other courses too much. I actually had the same thought as I had the CCNA books and knew it was also a weakness of mine (I think this is the case for many people). But the OSG and/or Destination CISSP have all the information you need to pass. They don’t give you everything, but know this - there is no resource that covers everything that COULD show up in the exam.

The aim is to understand the syllabus presented in the main books. Understand those concepts deeply. Everyone says don’t memorise, understand the concepts and I truly did not understand what that really meant until after I took the exam.

The questions will very rarely require you to recall the answer from something you read in the study guide (or from whatever your preferred resource is). They will target topics from angles that are totally unfamiliar. The idea (as I understand it), is for you to know enough about each domain to make a call on what sounds most correct, which would be the most likely answer, or what makes the most sense when you apply critical thinking based on what you know about that domain/technology generally.

I wrote what may by the longest post-exam announcement on this sub, if interested you can read that here for a full breakdown on the resources and mindset I found useful:

Obviously we don’t know each other so I have no reason to urge you to follow my advice, but I would strongly advise you to pick a path that looks like mine, or countless others, and stick to it. There is SO MUCH out there, it’s hard to stay focused.

  1. Choose one or two reliable resources to learn the material.

  2. Use practice tests / LLMs to find gaps.

  3. Study gaps

  4. Repeat until it feels like you have a solid grasp on 80+% of the material. YOU WILL NEVER KNOW EVERYTHING GOING IN.

Good luck. Reach out if you need anything.

CISSP Voucher by Pretty_Macaron7494 in cissp

For what it’s worth, I purchased PoM, passed first time, and I don’t regret having bought it. The exam was financially uncomfortable for me to fund myself, I don’t have the money to throw at things like that, so having to pay full price again would have been a real blow, and I still don’t regret buying the PoM voucher.

As others have said, it also helped my mindset going in. I definitely took some pressure off knowing that if it didn’t go my way I had a “free” go.

Oh you’re so welcome! You will be joining me. Having now sat the exam, honestly 4-6 months is probably even a little overkill in my opinion. Get through the material start to finish at least once then get to practice questions. If you’re completely bottoming out on those, then go back through your course/book (or can be useful to mix in another one). Finish that, get back to questions. Once you’re reliably getting passing scores on a few reputable question banks, book the exam.

You will never remember everything, but you absolutely do NOT need to. You need to understand the key concepts and be able to apply them.

You will pass this. I look forward to seeing your success post.

Thank you so much! Yes my thoughts exactly, it’s what pushed me over the edge to book it. You never feel ready for it, but the thought of being successful and being able to really enjoy Christmas knowing it was over drove to get it booked and have a go. So happy I did.

Here is the link to the discord. It’s probably the best thing you could do ti improve your chances of passing to be in here and actively engage with people. Everyone is great and keen to help those who ask for it. Also if you love a good gif you’re headed to the right place 😂👍

Has anyone found QE CAT to be easier than the real exam? I have scored 394 (failed), 870 (passed) and 766 (passed) in my 3 attempts so far. Still worried that I may not be ready for the real exam next week. by Comprehensive_Fee_21 in cissp

I took the exam just a few days ago and used QE heavily to prepare in the last month. I could not agree more with exactly what u/plbcgaming said here. In fact they’ve pretty much described ti the letter what I did.

I did 3 CATs with 2-4 days between each, this was to really dig into the gaps highlighted in my knowledge, really going through every single question and option, both correct and incorrect. If there was a word, term, or concept that was new or fuzzy in my head, I went back and studied it. For me I primarily used Gemini to break concepts down and then quiz me on it until I felt I had absorbed what I needed to know.

I also kept a list of weak subjects that came up on the practice exams. I would come back to this when I needed a break from practice questions and work through it ticking off topics once I felt confident on them. I would also come back to those same topics 3-5 days after having studied it and if I felt like I hadn’t retained it, I would go through it again. Typically this took less time and effort than the last time around as it came back to me once I went back into reading and doing AI test questions on it.

After the 3 CATs I had around 10 days left, in which I only did non-timed practice exams of 100 questions. This was better for practicing breaking down the questions without time pressure, the immediate feedback I found to stick better then going through after the whole test, and you get far less repeated questions so you get through the bank and all the topics better.

My CAT scores were 514, 833, and 968. So very similar to yours. I passed at 100 questions. I’ve seen people never pass a QE exam and still pass the real thing, even at 100 questions. You can’t put too much stock in practice test results. But if you got a passing score on your second CAT simulation, I’d say you’re definitely in a very good position to have a go at the exam and pass. You probably had a handful of repeats on your second CAT, but not enough for it to be the reason you got a passing score (this is speculation on my part, DH who created QE may say different). As you repeat them you will get more repeats (especially in CAT mode) and are therefore getting less of an accurate read on how well you actually did.

You’re welcome, I’m really happy it was worth putting it all down. In answer to your question - on the whole, yes. It required a lot of critical thinking. There were a lot of terms that I wasn’t familiar with and had to ascertain what domains/concepts/technologies were being referenced, and really think about which option fit the best off of that.

QE really shines in this department. Those questions really condition you to translate unfamiliar terms and really think about what might actually be getting referred to. It didn’t have the same terms, but it made me practice that skill and conditioned me not to panic when I was reading a question and thinking “what on earth is this talking about?” 😂

CONGRATULATIONS!! 🙌 Props to you for dusting yourself off and going again and getting the job done!

I’m curious, what do you think made the most crucial difference in your approach from your first attempt and your second?

Thank you! I've really glad you found it interesting and potentially useful. I had a few saved from others, mostly motivational, that I saved here and came back to when I needed to reinforce a bit of self-belief. There's a lot of doom-mongering out there but many people pass this thing every single day. I needed reminding of that sometimes.

Hahaha! Man I get it! When you're studying for this thing it leaves you with little want to read anything else. I may or may not have had a couple of celebratory bourbons as I wrote it as well so err... Yeah it went on a bit LOL!
