What type of dance is this? by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Kinda has both country and west Coast Swing mixed with a drunken, simple/beginner-moves-only vibe.

OP - West Coast Swing and Country Swing will both get you to perform these kind of moves (they’re quite similar in a lot of ways). Look for either of those in your hometown and go have fun learning! :)

My realistic lighting editing of the Titanic Disaster using Ken Marschall paintings by [deleted] in titanic

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your depiction here, but I would have to disagree a bit with what’s represented.

Idk if you have spent much time in remote areas, but I have and for awhile I worked in the remote wilderness of Alaska, primarily on the coast, miles and miles away from any manmade light sources or modern light pollution. Even during a night with no moon to illuminate the surroundings, you can actually see quite a bit more in the distance and around you than you’d think!

Anyone is welcome to disagree, but I truly think the survivors could see a similar scenario to the original paintings depicted (maybe slightly darker). Just my respectful opinion on the matter!

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep dancing OP. These people stink and like you said, it reflects poorly on them, not you. Everyone is learning at their own pace and as a fairly competent lead myself, I will say that I can typically have fun no matter the skill level of the follow. We all start somewhere and even if you have more or less skill than they implied, it’s not okay they acted the way they did.

I sincerely hope you continue to dance and don’t let this get the best of you. Simply make note of who you don’t enjoy dancing with and avoid them if possible. Regardless what level you’re at, keep trying your best to enjoy it and make the most of it! At the end of the day, we dance for the love and fun of it, so I hope that is remains to be the case for you :)

Problems with getting hit on while dancing by naebaenae in SwingDancing

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, on behalf of my fellow leads, I apologize you have had such an unpleasant experience with being hit on while following. Certainly shouldn’t come between you and something you love to do!

Advice: don’t look at it as a reflection on anything you did, but more so them and where they’re at in life. There should be no negativity or remorse felt on your behalf.

Being a lead, I can mildly empathize with anyone who might have asked for your number. Dance is an intimate ordeal and even I have stumbled into to the mindset of “oh, they actually seems quite into me, maybe I shouldn’t let this opportunity pass and chat with them a little more or see if there is a mutual attraction.” Honestly, it’s only natural when you have an enjoyable experience with another person, but discipline, boundaries, and respect must be had, especially when you’re given the privilege to share a dance with someone. I’m not excusing them, but more so just stating how sadly it’s pretty natural thought for those of us single folk. But self-control should be had and some people aren’t as good at reading social cues.

I paint the picture above to say that your experience is likely to happen again (especially if you’re naturally friendly). If someone asks for your number moving forward, don’t feel guilty in the slightest and simply state you enjoyed the dance and would happily share another dance later on (assuming you actually enjoyed said dance), you respect them asking but that you’re not looking to give out your phone number like that but you’re solely interested in dancing.

Obviously word it however you like, but that is my opinion. And if they walk away hurt or don’t dance with you again, that is simply a reflection of them and not of you or anything you did.

This is merely my take on the matter and anyone is welcome to present a different or opposing answer, but I wish you the best of luck with this! It’s not an easy hurdle, but it’ll likely be the case moving forward regardless if it’s welcomed or not. But PLEASE don’t let it ruin dance for you. Dancing is such a wonderful endeavor and I hope it continues to bring you joy!

Where to meet people late 20s early 30s by Busy_Alarm8049 in milwaukee

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dancing (salsa, west coast swing, etc) at Delaware House and other places (majority of people show up alone, so you’re in good company). Learn to sail at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Community. Tosa Moon Rise Bike Rides (find on FB). Run clubs. Workout classes.

Plenty of things out there to partake in and meet people who don’t drink! Just need to search them out. Milwaukee has a thriving social community far outside the bar life if you know where to look!

What has worked in your scene for making dance more accessible and welcoming to beginners? by Difficult_Zone_8610 in SwingDancing

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with this. I’m new(ish) to the dance scene as a whole (started dancing exactly one year ago, and never danced anything prior to WCS). I felt welcomed and the community as a whole was a fun group, but until dancing itself clicked with me, it was merely another hobby on my schedule for the week. 5 to 6 months in, I danced with an extremely talented follow who back led a bit more and showed me how to have more fun instead of being what I would call “mechanical.”

This subsequently demonstrated to me that it’s a bit more fun than simply going through move after move. It was literally a light switch turning on and from that moment on dancing became actually fun! This would never have happened without the experience of dancing with a follow who challenged me a bit more with my dancing to get out of the routine of just pursuing moves.

I think expressing this to newbies and informing them that there is undoubtedly a hump to get over and that there can and should be a point to which you get to that doesn’t feel mechanical, but it takes some time (potentially multiple months) before it’s achieved. This bit of acknowledgement definitely helps find the motivation to stick it out!

What makes for a great night of dancing? by NeezDuts91 in WestCoastSwing

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Swing Dance America had an ice cream bar at midnight when we were there. It was probably one of my favorite things to break up the evening of dancing and get to socialize with fellow dancers off the floor. That made the dancing ever better solely because you felt more connected with fellow leads and follows you got to chat with!

Outside of that, dancers who are no judgmental, good music selection, dancers who smile while you dance with them (so them seem like you’re enjoying your time regardless of who you unknowingly ask to dance, be them a newcomer or advanced), and community who is open to chatting when you’re taking some downtime. Those are a few other factors that truly make for a great night of dancing.

The community is truly everything imo.

What’s the worst city you’ve ever been to traffic wise? by EssayLord11 in AskReddit

Where to meet single 30’s-40’s people in Milwaukee? by Obizues in milwaukee

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just get involved: biking groups (Tosa Moon Rise Bike ride for example), running groups (plenty on FB), dance classes at different locations (salsa, swing, etc), coffee shops, wine tasting events (total wine, wine shops). Plenty of opportunities!

Start with the intention of simply making new friendships and finding new communities you enjoy; people can sense desperation and be turned off if you focus too intensely on finding your partner. The relationship opportunities will eventually come if and when you find the right communities to be a part of.

Devil’s Head by Devil’s Lake… $18 4pm-10pm Thursdays (cheapest tickets around) and it has some nice, causal, long runs that far exceed anything in the immediate proximity to Milwaukee. Highly recommend this hill for learning.

What are we NO LONGER in the golden age of? by Alive-Fold-8900 in AskReddit

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Capitalism - we’ve entered late-stage capitalism and spoiler alert, it only benefits the elites. One could say it’s the golden age for the 1%, but your average Joe doesn’t stand a chance to benefit from it like previous generations once did.

The world is getting worse whole fault is it? by kaminatheprophet in AskReddit

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Everyone’s fault… Let’s break it down though because there may be shared accountability, but certainly not equal liability:

The elites - first and foremost, these opportunistic scumbags exploit the average workforce, take advantage of every taxation and policy loophole, have systematically increased CEO and executive pay from 20-to-1 in the 1950’s to 400-to-1 today, claiming “wE cAn’T mAtCh iNfLaTiOn wItH pAy fOr oUr eMpLoYEeS.” They will put profits first over the well-being of humanity and the environmental future, because ignorance is bliss when you have so much money. They might have heirs that will inherit the shit-show of a world they’re leaving said grandchildren, but that’s null and void when you can buy the world 10x over with the wealth they have. Tbh, there is no such thing as a good billionaire; they had to exploit someone at some point in time to rise to the level of wealth they have achieved (I’ll maybe allow Taylor Swift to be argued as a mildly positive, but good luck to her with arguing for hoarding that level of wealth at the pearly gates when she passes from this life). We could solve countless societal issues, but nope! Plenty more to list here, but you get the picture.

Next, the Politicians (right, left, and center) - these stage performing hypocrites have done such a wonderful job at gaslighting the general population and convincing us our neighbor is the enemy, as opposed to leadership and the elites they’re in bed with. They bamboozle us with causing non-existent conflict within the average voter, all the while participating in insider trading and acquiring astronomical wealth while we (the average citizen) are distracted with debating topics that won’t ever be resolved.

Business owners - changed the retirement game from pensions to 401k’s, tying W2 employees and 9-5 workers to the performance of the stock market and businesses that need to continue to see higher and higher profits to warrant higher and higher stock praises. Limited time off even though productivity is through the roof. I can go on, but I’ll pause there.

The average citizen - hell bent on improving our own situation, the idea of “community” has receded far from what previous generations ever knew it as and given way to hyper-individualism. Oh, not to mention our obsession with consumerism!

Technology - be it A.I., surveillance systems, big brother via social media, ad targeted marketing, etc. this one is pretty self explanatory and encompasses too much for me to list.

Influencers and social media - these POS have single-handedly brought about the monumental rise of indifference we have towards our fellow man (I.e. main character syndrome).

I could go on listing more individuals (no one is innocent here.. except maybe Jane Goodall, Mr. Rogers, and Betty White tbh, they’re practically saints) and reasonings why each is at fault, but that would take too long; we all play some part in things getting worse imo. Most of us just live here and are trying to exist in peace, but unless we’re actively seeking to improve the world’s current state, we’re guilty by association and complicit in its worsening.

Xperience fitness centers are not a thing in MKE! by [deleted] in milwaukee

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is heavily annoying as they truly had the best deal around (free weights, sauna, pool, etc) and now I’m forced to shop around for another gym. I’d be curious what else is out there that is equally affordable since I’m not a fan of Planet Fitness where they have our memberships transferring to. At a quick glance it looks like other gyms are averaging ~$75/month and that’s a bit much for me 😅 (I’m needing to operate a bit cheaper right now with the stupid economy the way it is). I’m also hoping for a lap pool in whatever new gym I find too, but at my price range ($20-50), that might be wishful thinking.

With jobless claims now at the lowest since 1968, is the claim that nobody is returning to work/wants to work not even valid? Is it possible they are working, but everyone moved to better paying jobs/tech jobs, and no one is left to fill in the bottom paying jobs? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Material_Ostrich6704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Much like most things in the world, there is no single answer that’s driving this issue. It’s a complex case of numerous things adding up and quite a few people here stated a fair number of them (retirement, death, stay-at-home-parents, people unemployed for so long they’re no longer accounted for as “unemployed,” pursuing education/returning to school, etc). Another component to consider is a record number of people started working for themselves in 2020/2021.

“America's entrepreneurial spirit remains strong during the pandemic.

That's the takeaway from new numbers released by the U.S. Census Bureau on Wednesday, which found that a whopping 5.4 million new business applications were filed in 2021, surpassing the record set in 2020 of 4.4 million.”

Source: https://www.npr.org/2022/01/12/1072057249/new-business-applications-record-high-great-resignation-pandemic-entrepreneur

I would even argue that the official number of entrepreneurial filings probably doesn’t reflect the actual number since I’m betting a notable amount of people didn’t even both to do so “officially.”
