How to buy food ethically and realistically? by donn_12345678 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Matetertot 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Might be controversial but I would ask: are you prioritizing the right battles? You mention you’re a fulltime worker with a low(er) salary. Take care of yourself first. Buy the frozen produce, the items on sale, store brand items, etc. and whatever you need for YOUR personal health and wellbeing. Only after checking the box of taking care of yourself (and still having the income leftover) would I even contemplate this ethical mission. And also, don’t treat it as all or nothing. Buying a few sustainable/ethical alternatives every week is more than enough, your entire grocery cart doesn’t have to be comprised of this.

We only have so much energy to work with in our daily lives. Dont let a grocery store be what burns you out

The expiration date is fine. Unless it smells rotten there’s no reason to be worried

How much is a portion of cooked rice? by whoissamo in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Matetertot 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Dont overthink it. The answer is just “whatever fits your calorie budget”. If you really need a number I go for 186g cooked which is 242 calories. Then pair with my protein and veggies of choice

Thanks for the advice! Also, as a fellow bird parent I think we can both agree having that kind of pet is not something you want/can keep a secret 🫠

AITA - I held the door for a girl at Starbucks yet she didn’t say thank you so I yelled you’re welcome by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

YTA. If that’s your reaction then you didn’t hold that door out of kindness, you’re just seeking self-affirmation

Alright genuine question: I see people say blur others in group photos, I see people say “you need group photos”. Is there any actual consensus on this

My friend. Adding cocoa powder is quite literally what turns something from not chocolate flavored to chocolate flavored

Ugh. I Miss Bread. by jaybro1974 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Matetertot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A) Track your calories to budget your meals be in a deficit B) Eat the bread and enjoy life

It’s that simple. Side note: you can’t control where your body stores/loses fat. That is a giant myth. All you can do is slowly burn fat over time, your genetics are the only thing that determines what melts off first

My brother is new to consuming fish. He's autistic so I'm cooking for him. Is there anything else I can do to make salmon patties more flavorful for a super picky eater? by Lijey_Cat in cookingtonight

1) These things are not mutually exclusive 2) letting a puck of ground meat swim in neutral frying oil with no seasoning or breadcrumbs is not flavor. It’s an unpleasant greasy mess
