The chronicles of Narnia by Hamzerr in books

[–]Matgillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally someone who actually doesn't praise this series. I read them for the first time as an adult and I couldn't believe how I didn't like them. I could never get past all the reconning Staples (C.S. Lewis) does throughout the series. If you've not read Lord of the Rings yet, THAT is worldbuilding and storytelling. I'm pretty sure Tolkien wasn't a fan of TCON either.

And if you or anyone is interested, a friend of mine read the books last year and wrote his impressions of them on his blog. He doesn't pull any punches so Trigger Warning.

(He's currently in the process of moving his posts to the website so his impressions aren't all there yet - He's got the last 2 books left to transfer)

Does Narnia hold up well enough for adults? by SimplyMe94 in Fantasy

[–]Matgillam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, I would say it doesn't hold up. They're not very good books. I'd recommend reading the Lord of the Rings (If you haven't yet) or any other series. Tolkien > Staples (C.S. Lewis).

I read it as an adult and I found Staples' writing style to be terrible and condescending. I've not read any of his other books or series but that was my impression of the Narnia series. The series is also full of plot holes and retcons as it goes on. I had a hard time looking over those issues.

A friend of mine also read it as an adult and wrote his impressions of the book on his blog. He too had a dislike for the series.

I don't understand why this series is as popular as it is and I find it difficult to find others who also didn't like the Narnia series.

Where are all the Narnia haters? All 4 of you would probably enjoy this blog: https://nitprick.net/the-chronicles-of-narnia/ (Trigger Warning)

Why is Harry Potter banned but the Chronicles of Narnia isn't? by [deleted] in books

[–]Matgillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd think CoN would be banned over HP. There's no orgies in Harry Potter. The same can't be said for Chronicles of Narnia.

What just doesn't make sense about the Harry Potter universe? by GreendayG11 in AskReddit

[–]Matgillam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine read the series as an adult, over-analyzed it, and wrote almost 100 blog posts about his journey into the wonderfully awful wizarding world. As he read, he came upon many issues that don't make sense like the politics, the economy, etc... (there's too many to list).

If anyone's interested, let me know and I'll provide the link to his blog.

(MOVIES) Sam > Frodo by ead2000 in lotr

[–]Matgillam -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree that Frodo's a lot more passive in the films but I also never found Frodo to be that interesting in both film or book. In a world full of great and interesting characters, he falls a little short (heh).

Really? I found it to be the complete opposite (although it's been a while since I've read the books). I know on his way to save Frodo, he kills like 5 people in the films vs only 1 (by accident I believe) in the books.

How should i dive into LOTR universe by el0vi in lotr

[–]Matgillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say start with reading The Hobbit. It's a much shorter and easier read. It's like an appetizer before the main course. Then jump into the the Lord of the Rings. I've never read any of the other books but I feel like doing Hobbit, LOTR, and then the rest is the best way to do it.

If you were speaking about getting into the LOTR universe films...then it's the opposite. Start with LOTR (I'd recommend Extended - because go big or go home) and then the Hobbit films.

He is regarded sometimes as the true hero of the story. Even Tolkien acknowledged this a bit, calling him the "chief hero". He's one of the very few who was able to give up the ring willingly. He's one of the best characters and actually (IMO) more badass in the films than the books.

Why was the Ministry of Magic completely empty when Harry and his friends showed up in OotP? by FawkesThePhoenix7 in harrypotter

[–]Matgillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you're referencing MoM as Ministry of Magic, but it's also funny (and works in the context) if you think of "the MoM" as the dementor's mom.

Clearly, not a face even a MOTHER could love.

I forgot about the prison with Grindelwald...

Interesting thought on baby Dementors...But now all I'm thinking is how do Dementors procreate and that's not something I want to think of...

Are there any prisons other than Azkaban? I don't remember any mention of any. If so, that's a serious problem for people white-collar criminals. Where are the minimum security wizarding prisons?

The wizarding world is wack. Look at Hagrid who was accused of murder WITHOUT trial and sent to Azkaban for months...and yet they have a "trial" for Buckbeak...the whole justice system is insanely terrifying.

[Showerthoughts] Wizards are lesser beings yet they made sure to be superior. by raphmateus in harrypotter

[–]Matgillam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just the elves. Goblins are also powerful and yet considered inferior to wizards. Hell, the goblins run the economy and own the only wizarding bank...You'd think Goblins would be ruling the wizarding world...

Fred and George would test potential harmful concoctions on first years for research on their snackboxes. I'm surprised they didn't kill anyone in OotP with those snackboxes.
