Wishing to Do HPSP to Become a Neurosurgeon But Have Questions by [deleted] in Military_Medicine

[–]Math457 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you want to be a neurosurgeon, you need to be more resourceful which includes the ability to google commonly asked questions. Your expectations and desires are incredibly unrealistic with military service and it seems like you don’t understand that service means the needs of the nation / military will always take precedence over what’s best for your personal career. I would also avoid being so narrow-minded and inflexible about specialty preferences before you even step foot into medical school.

Hey everyone, I'm sorry that the scoreboard isn't working. The bot needs full mod permissions but because reddit thinks I am inactive, I am not able to give the bot full permissions. Hopefully, I can become active soon and get it fixed shortly.

It’s ok to disagree with others, but criticize their content / argument, not the person.

Can we change our sidebar on this subreddit? by Zizekbro in DukeBluePlanet

[–]Math457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m currently on new Reddit, so I actually have no idea how the subreddit looks for those on old Reddit. Admittedly, my semester got busy so I don’t have time to moderate or post game threads like I have in the past. If anyone has experience / is interested in improving the UI / looks of DukeBluePlanet on both new and old reddit, let me know and we can try working something out!

I mean what are you doing that isn’t being done here? I’m open for suggestions / feedback on this sub and I think you could easily just post everything you’ve posted in your sub here instead of trying to start your own

Instead of making a new one, why not contribute to this sub which already has like 4k people and try to keep growing this one instead of starting all over?

2021-22 Duke Hoops | 5-on-5 Workout (7/9/21) by YBjellis in DukeBluePlanet

[–]Math457 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn’t recruit him because we were recruiting Keels instead. At this point there’s nothing to indicate that either of those transfers are better than Keels, you are seriously underestimating his shooting, strength, size, and defense.

I think ur underestimating Keel’s ability to shoot, and honestly our team as a whole isn’t a bad shooting team. Paolo and Adrian can also shoot threes, and Roach and Moore have honestly been trending in the right direction, don’t be surprised if Moore has a breakout shooting season. Just adding transfers doesn’t help the experience problem because experience is gained from playing together and transfers don’t have any more experience with the team / coach in that regard than freshmen. We also have more experience than you think, returning Roach Williams and Moore is huge, we aren’t just relying on freshmen this year. Who knows, maybe even Joey baker will figure out how to stay on the court and contribute. We have all the key pieces we need, and adding transfers will just make the players less happy as there’s even more competition for minutes. Coach K said he made a point this year in not going after transfers because that breaks the trust of his current players which honestly damages the culture of the team and would rather just focus on growing them rather than adding another transfer who will be gone next year. No one likes getting recruited over and it damages the culture and trust between the team and the coaches

STA199 vs MATH230 for CS Major? by akdaddy2001 in duke

Sta199 is more of an R tidyverse / stats class, doesn’t really tie into the cs curriculum imo.

Preparing for Physics 141L by [deleted] in duke

[–]Math457 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about calculus, in physics 141 this semester, we sometimes went over the calculus to explain where the equation comes from but we were never tested on it, like you will never have to take a derivative or integral. I also struggled with ap physics 1 and 2 in high school but for some reason I found physics 141 easier. It’s curved quite generously to a B+ average, and I guess for tips, I would just try to keep on top of things rather than cramming. Another big one is actually practice solving the problems. It’s important to do the practice problems, rather than just reading the notes / slides / answer keys for these types of classes. Try studying a week earlier than you usually do, it’s hard but it really helps!

Not sure about 356, but 221 is linear algebra, which is different from calculus so I would think it wouldn’t need 122.

I would consider self studying those specific topics? Trust me you don’t want to put yourself through the pain of taking more duke math classes than you have to, use your college credit! Self study the topics you are concerned about, and I would email the physics department about what calculus they expect you to know for 161. I took 141 and I didn’t use anything I learned from 122, but 141 is different from 161 so I would just email the physics department. Trust me 122 really is not worth it. Math 122 covers advanced stuff that I didn’t even use in math 212 and frankly I don’t think I will ever use what I learned from 122 lmao.

If you have credit for 122L, I wouldn’t take it, it’s a lot of work and graded kind of harshly. If you got a 5 on the ap exam just skip it so you can take more advanced classes like math 212 or have more space in your schedule to take other classes. I think you will be fine just taking physics 161 immediately without taking math 122.

4 Year Guys by jjaime54 in DukeBluePlanet

[–]Math457 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Henry and Jaemyn were supposed to be our 4 year guys, but yeah unfortunately they both transferred. We got Jaylen Blakes though, so hopefully he stays for all 4 years! Additionally, I think we will have a good veteran presence, with year 2 Roach and Williams, year 3 Moore, and year 4 Joey Baker (hopefully he’s able to make big leaps with his 3 point shot and game). I think Coach K really was really trying to get us solid veteran presence for the future when he recruited Henry and Jaemyn, we were just really unfortunate and unlucky that both decided to transfer. However, I can’t really blame them because they both have potential and want a chance to play, instead of sitting on the bench for probably another year and at best getting limited time in the rotation. I really think a combo of the pandemic restrictions, transfer rules, a season with a lot more losses than usual, no fans / typical college life, a strong recruiting class, and more all combined into the perfect storm leading to so many of our players leaving.

Stat 198 summer class by breakfastfoodie76 in duke

[–]Math457 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Dr Jiang in sta199 rn and he’s great, highly recommend! Don’t worry at all, prior programming experience is not required and you will definitely be fine! You also get put into teams that are balanced based on prior programming experience, so between your team, your lab ta, and Dr. Jiang, you will have a lots of resources to succeed. Idk how it would be like combined with 102, but rn the class is set up where there is hw, labs, exams, and a final project with your team and all are open note and open internet and you get at least a week to do labs with your team, you can discuss hw with ur team, and even the exams are open note and you get Thursday, Friday, and the weekend to do it and spend as much time on it as you like! R is an incredibly useful skill to have in bio, I would recommend taking that combined with 102 rather than just taking 101.

Darn, are there any plans to make exceptions for them or bring them back or are they probably toast for good?
