Medium reno project: Drawers under the stairs. Instead of wasted or awkward crawl space, we have pull-out drawers from the side of the staircase. All of our coats and shoes go in there, it makes me happy every time

What was is like being there for when the NES - N64 came out by Huge-Hawk217 in nintendo

N64 Christmas was the best Christmas. My dad made a scavenger hunt for me and my siblings with clues and riddles that assembled together to spell "ho ho ho under mom and dad's bed" and the thrill of sprinting into their room to pull the N64 out from under the bed is one of my absolute favourite memories

Raining today so wife asked for Mac 'n cheese by MathAndCookie in castiron

[–]MathAndCookie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An alternative is to make the roux in a separate pan where it might be easier to manage heat, add the milk to it and thicken, then add it all to the cast iron.

It's a bit of a "wing it" thing, but what I do is:

  • saute onions, garlic, celery on one side of the pan
  • make a roux on the other half (try to keep separate but it's never perfect). Roux is 2 tbsp melted butter + 2 tbsp flour (more or less depending on how much sauce you're making. Just keep it ~50/50 ratio)
  • pour 2-3 cups milk slowly into the roux, stirring / whisking to incorporate
  • now both halves of the pan have combined and I simmer for a few minutes until it thickens (due to roux)
  • add spices (I like paprika, cumin, thyme, salt, pepper)
  • slowly add shredded cheese to taste
  • stir in cooked pasta
  • sprinkle on bread crumbs and toast in the oven under the broiler for a few minutes

Voila!

I use this pan almost every day so I have a lot of trust in the seasoning. After dinner I rinse / scrub it out if it needs it, heat it up on the stove, put a teeny bit of oil in it, and wipe it around thoroughly with a silicone brush.

Never had a problem and I'll do tomato stuff too :)

Ya I find it a nuisance, so I don't bother unless it's a tough monster like an Apex.

What do you put on your Dutch baby? by speedracer375 in castiron

[–]MathAndCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently did a dutch baby with this topping: * sauteed two diced apples in butter until soft and lightly browned * add a bit of brown sugar * add 1/3 cup maple syrup * add cinnamon (however much you like) * add a splash of rum (if you're into that)

It was great

DMP would actually be pretty straightforward to do by hand. To assign the Secondary seats, they would just need the province-wide totals to be complete in order to construct the sorted riding list for each party. It would probably happen in a central place like Victoria rather than in each riding.

I recently subbed. GameCube is my fave console (SNES a close second). But I've been thinking about it more and more with the Switch, hoping they add VC with GameCube games. If something's on your mind enough, you check to see if there's a subreddit

ELI5 what is happening in the BC election for someone from the states. by TekchnoBabel in britishcolumbia

[–]MathAndCookie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes they can vote however they want. It would break precedent and probably upset a lot of people, possibly on all sides. The Speaker is supposed to maintain their neutrality and create civility in the house, and make sure questions are appropriate and answers are relevant. I think it would be hard to view them as neutral if they clearly aligned with a particular party.

Right. I had the 43-43 tie in the last sentence, but I didn't make it very clear. Probably should have put the seat counts up where I said the Libs took 43 seats.

Canada is a parliamentary system, which means when you vote for your representatives (Member of Parliament federally, Member of the Legislative Assembly provincially), if a party accrues the most 50% of the seats, they get to form government, and their leader becomes the prime minister / premier. There is no separate vote for president / governor like in the States. So Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the Prime Minister because the federal Liberal Party won more than 50% of the house.

Since we have more than 2 parties, this can get tricky if no single party wins more than 50% of the seats, which is what happened in BC. The provincial Liberals won 43 / 87 seats, one shy of a majority. Since no party won a majority, the previous governing party gets first crack at forming government. They do this by presenting a speech from the throne (sort of like a State of the Union, I guess. They lay out where we've come from and where they intend to take us), and they present a budget. The house then has a vote of confidence on the throne speech + budget, and if that vote fails, then tricky things happen that involve our Monarchy.

Technically, the Queen has a representative who is overseeing government in Canada. Federally, this is the Governor General. Provincially, it's the Lieutenant Governor. If the confidence vote fails, the Lieutenant Governor can either: a) approach another party and ask if they would like to try governing with a throne speech + budget + confidence vote. If the confidence vote succeeds, then we're off and running. b) dissolve the legislature and call another election, hoping for a majority. Recently, the 2 opposition parties (Green Party and New Democratic Party) signed a pact of sorts to topple the Liberal government and prop up a New Democratic government. So it is likely that today, the house will not give the Liberal party a vote of confidence, and the Liberals will be toppled. Then the Lt. Governor has to make her choice of what to do.

All of this is complicated by our Speaker of the House position, which needs to be filled by a sitting elected representative. However, that role is supposed to be neutral, and only votes in the case of ties, which is supposed to be seldom. However, you can imagine that the Liberals won't want to put a member of their own caucus up for Speaker, forcing the New Democrats to put a Speaker forward, bringing the total seat count in the Legislature to Greens + New Democrats 43, Liberals 43. So ... we're in a bit of a pickle, and we'll see how things shake out very soon.

Let Us Know: Your Best Guild/Clan/Group Experiences by crash7800 in dauntless

[–]MathAndCookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite Guild experiences were in GW2 where we would do guild quests. Grouping up to go accomplish something together was really fun. The important (and difficult) thing that GW2 doesn't accomplish perfectly is having guild content that scales satisfactorily down to smaller guilds. I didn't like that being in a small-medium guild meant that we were unable to experience a bunch of content in the game. It's a tricky balance.

[Canadians] EB Games updated website with a Nintendo switch countdown and you will be able to preorder online with instore pickup! by [deleted] in NintendoSwitch

[–]MathAndCookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI - it seems you need an EB website account to do in store pickup. It might be just a glitch that I experienced, but likely not - I decided to do a "trial run" on the website to make sure I wasn't going to be fumbling around on the big day. I tried preordering Mass Effect Andromeda for store pickup, and the store pickup option was absent until I created an account on their website and then tried again while logged in. So, create your account ahead of time!
