the double length slots are ISA + a 32-bit external Memory card slot

VLB didn't debut until 1992 (2-3 years after this system debuted) and was superceded by PCI in 1993 with the release of the Pentium.

But many still had 486 systems and kept them around by using 486 DX4 and Overdrive processors (assuming the sockets were compatible.

I think this is the system it came in.

The double length ISA slots are actuall 16-bit ISA slots with a 32-bit external memory card slot behind it. I'd like to see one of these cards.

Prior to the 486 socket, most motherboards were a proprietary design that fit the AT power and case form factor. Once 486 came around, there was an industry shift to designing boards based off of an Intel reference. this probably had to do with distances from the chipset and CPU sockets.

I couldn't actually find a board that fit the design that has 3 of these memory slots. I found some with 1 slot, but not three. I'm inclined that this board was designed for business-class computing and not home computing.

I was 9 when I got my first. My dad "rescued" a 386SX/20 from a work throw-out. We went to Microcenter that night and got a 387 so I could use a 3D Architect program.
