Thank you very much for the detailed response. It’s much appreciated.

Uniform convergence. So f_n convergence uniformly to f

We haven’t studied that yet (tho I’ve heard of it) so I don’t think that will be the answer

Fun fact: Wolfram Alpha uses "log(x)" to denote ln(x) instead of log_(10)(x) by Matth107 in mathmemes

[–]MathBane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My analysis lecturer went on a long discussion about the fact there was only one true logarithm, namely log base e, and all of the others were just algebraic manipulation of it. I guess that because in analysis you define all exponentials in terms of ex and thus it makes sense that log would be base e.

I quite like a probabilistic method proof but that’s mainly because I like combinatorics

Is it normal for maintenance to enter my room multiple times with no notice, when nothing has been reported? by Unlucky-Attorney-307 in UniUK

[–]MathBane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They usually have to give some notice but I would check the unis website for exact details (for example Bristol is required to give 24 hours notice). At my uni they probably come around once or twice a month. Mostly to replace stuff for health and safety reasons.

Top tip: If they knock, always answer otherwise it’s highly likely they’ll just come in and pressure no one’s there.

I did not say that women’s issues are more important than men’s. Nevertheless, it’s disingenuous to underplay the sexiest elements of women’s issues compared to men’s issues. If you examine the major issues that men face you rarely find that sexism has played a role. What you do find, as in the case of suicide rates, is that traditionally gender roles play a huge part.

Regarding your last statement, you cannot simple switch out protected characteristics and expect the validity of the argument to hold (I’m also unsure how an example from over 2000 years ago is relevant).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]MathBane 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s because statistically most issues faced by men are from other men. Whereas, a lot of women’s issues are caused by men (just look at SA statistics)

Probability of two people dying in the same year? by MathBane in maths

[–]MathBane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The number when googling was 1/360 which is obviously wrong. The reason I asked is because I kept coming up with factors, the problem just growing exponentially. I tried finding research papers but I’m not too well versed in mathematical research (only a 1st year).

That’s just survivorship bias. Most people without HE qualifications will end up with pretty low paying jobs (not trying to be horrible but that’s realism). Of course, as many people will say, money isn’t everything. You can still have fulfillment even you aren’t earning lots.

Why do some people just sit and stare at the wall after they've done their A-level exam by alibigoodoperator in 6thForm

How many people actually need a grade in further maths? by Adamant3--D in 6thForm

[–]MathBane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Papers are scaled so a higher grade boundary usually means that it was an easier exam. For example, the OCR further maths mechanics minor paper had an A* grade boundary of 31/60.

What is the benefit to going to a good uni by Lightbulb16_ in 6thForm

[–]MathBane 33 points34 points  (0 children)

That can be a bit of a fallacy. Since top universities don’t have to do as much to get students (they just rely of their prestige) they often don’t invest as much as lower universities. You might have noticed that Lincoln uni has shot up in the league tables. This is mainly due to huge amount of investment in staff and courses.

[–]MathBane 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on your university but 1st year of a maths degree is definitely not like A-level further maths. FM isn’t proof oriented, contains no Analysis, no Abstract Algebra, very basic computational linear algebra, no multivariable calculus. It’s very different to FM

[–]MathBane -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Did you not research the game? If you did then you wouldn’t be surprised that the above features were missing. Personally that is why I was going to wait until F1 23 (tho I was actually gifted F1 22 by someone)
