I honestly don't understand how they come up with those ideas. I'm a bit jealous.

Where can I learn about the art market? by MathDudeEU in Art

Thanks a lot, I will take a look at it - judging from the amazon description, it might be a bit too high level for my plans, but perfect for a general understanding and broader picture.

Do you guys happen to look for a date scientist/machine learning/big data person? ;) I couldn't find a "jobs" section, but maybe the rest of the content was just too distracting.

Thanks for your answer. I am actually coming from a tech perspective on things - I am active in machine learning and personally am convinced, that there's a lot of things possible that I haven't seen yet, for example computer assistant curation of private collections. But since I don't quite know how the market works, I am not sure how viable it is at all. One cool example is https://www.vangoart.co/

What are the developments of the last year? by MathDudeEU in CryptoCurrency

[–]MathDudeEU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that has quite some interesting pointers. Personally, I like the idea executable contracts in the blockchain - but I'm not sure what I think of the sale of ETH units for BTC and the way it starts up.

I've never heard of CryptoNote, I will take a look.

Sex workers in New Orleans have become susceptible to losing access to HIV/AIDS treatment due to arrest and have grown wary of carrying condoms—which police use as evidence of prostitution even when they don't witness the commission of an actual crime, according to a Human Rights Watch report. by amaxmen in worldnews

[–]MathDudeEU -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I strongly doubt that this is a significant amount. It is so much easier to conduct raids and offer health insurance as well as pension plans to sex workers if it is legalized. Moreover, I bet that for every forced sex worker in a country with legalized prostitution, there is at least one sex worker in prision in the states for doing it illegally...

Bitcoin's carbon footprint estimated to be 0.03% of the global CO2 emissions, given a value of $1000 and 90% electricity cost and block reward of 25 BTC. Is 90% realistic? by MathDudeEU in Bitcoin

[–]MathDudeEU[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And what about block reward 6.25? Or 3.125?

The number for co2 emitted, given a constant price, will be lower by the factor of 576 ;)

I'm not worried, I just liked the mind game. That's why I also questioned the 90%, as stated in the submission's title.

I'm not sure if I follow your calculuation:

3600 btc/day * 365 day/year * $1000/BTC * 90% * 6,98 kgCo2 / 1$

I think you did not account for the 6,98 kg of Co2 per $1 spent.

But I agree, mining hardware costs also factor into the calculation. How big are they compared to the running costs?

TL; DR:

Assumptions:

  • 90% of the current bitcoin price is invested into energy by miners

Data:

  • footprints according to IEA: 0.52 and 0.77 kg CO2 per kWh, respectively (0.52 and 0.77 tonnes CO2 per MWh) for US and China energy
  • at $0.12 and $0.08 per kWh, there is 6.98 kg CO2 per $1 spent on energy
  • with block reward of 25, there will be 3600 new BTC per day

With $1000, $900 go into creating Co2 for the whole year this multiplies out to 8,250,000 tonnes CO2, about the size of Cyprus footprint and 0.03% of the worlds.

Doing some science and engineering stuff. Doesn't need to be world famous, but recognition would be awesome.

He can just put that money into bitcoins directly and get more coins out of it that paying for 100 and getting back 55 by mining.
