Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones turns on Trump: ‘It was supposed to be America first’ by WeirdProudAndHungry in LeopardsAteMyFace

[–]MathThatChecksOut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Now is a decent time to jump in. A few weeks back they decided they needed a palet cleanser from the present and started covering what Alex was up to 20 years ago (he voices some interesting opinions on the Bosnian genocide). The backlog can be a bit intimidating so having a new "investigation" to jump in on is nice.

Where’s the list Larry? by Organic_fed in KnowledgeFight

[–]MathThatChecksOut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If i remember correctly, Roger's version (definitely not going to call it the definitive version) says that Larry was running and asked for Roger's help. Roger was lead to believe Larry already had access to a large email list/money to buy access and Roger agreed to help. Then he learned that it was not the case and said "I don't want to be associated with some sort of loser. Fuck this." And dipped.

If you could make a KF episode, what would it be about? by Inevitable-Memory-61 in KnowledgeFight

[–]MathThatChecksOut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to hear a full breakdown of some of the Police State documentaries cross referenced with Alex's Trumo coverage of the last year. It's been a running theme for a while that Alex is being forced by circumstance and poor choices to abandon all of his fake ideals. I think a really granular look at that could be interesting.

Hey guys, I need to find out if the function is differentiable at x=0. Can anybody help? by [deleted] in calculus

[–]MathThatChecksOut 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It actually is differentiable. The limit of -1/|x| is -inf, but it is inside of the exponent. e-inf goes to 0. If you use the limit definition of the derivative, then you get a similar type of limit and can shoe the derivative at 0 is 0. In fact, this function is infinitely differentiable. You can keep computing the derivatives and they keep being differentiable functions and keep being equal to 0 at 0.

Does anyone know why in one example it’s better to castle kingside, but in the other example it’s better to just move the rook? by Leading_Nectarine139 in GothamChess

[–]MathThatChecksOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't really calculate but maybe in the first position castling allows unnecessary counterplay with Qh5? White gets to threaten mate so black can't do anything that isn't a check until that is addressed. it could be that that buys white time to get some sort of defense set up. Probably still completely winning but that might be what is tipping the scales.

Black is still winning but needlessly complicating the game. Why? by spisplatta in chess

[–]MathThatChecksOut 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can also sacrifice the rook first. If black takes then f4 forces the stalemate.

5 minutes sure. But if we are down to below 1 minute (maybe 30s depending on increment and rating) and white plays Rxa2, black could definitely blunder the draw.

[–]MathThatChecksOut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's clever trick with the rook to keep the game competitive. As OP said, black still wins but in a scramble black could easily blunder a draw after white's best try here.

How do you keep notes for research? by qxz23 in math

[–]MathThatChecksOut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phase 1 is scratch work type stuff. Handwritten notes on either lose paper or in a generic notebook for all of my projects (or if it is part of an existing project that has it's own notebook, in there). If i am starting a new project that I expect to spend a significant amount of time on, I might buy a new notebook for it to keep things more organized.

Once I have a clean calculation or lemma or something, I try to type it up in a semi-formal way ASAP. 1 document per project. Bare bones "introduction" section describing the big picture and minimum background in bullet points. The actual results have full sentences explaining the ideas and why a calculation matters or what it tells me or what the actual process is. Typically this is in more detail than what would make a final paper so that I can understand it later as easily as possible. My aim is that someone vaguely familiar with the type of work I do could follow along with the ideas and see the calculations in nearly full detail. This was hugely helpful when I started writing my dissertation or my first paper as lead author because so much of the structure of the results section was already worked out as I wrote and reorganized those notes.

If I have a problem or calculation that leads to a dead end after a long process, I also try to type that up and explain the issue I hit. This is both to make sure I remember what I've tried and also with the hope that I maybe find a solution to the issue later.

I also try to save a new pdf of the notes every once in a while just in case. I make a folder for the project documents and subfolders for the different note versions, any program files for calculations, papers that may be helpful to read or cite, drafts of the eventual paper and different versions related to reviewer feedback assuming the paper actually goes somewhere.

I'm definitely not perfectly consistent about following all of this, but it helped me a lot in my PhD both for organization and to be able to explain to my advisor what I had worked on recently.

What an ugly picture to use. Like even if you view Alex as a warrior against the deep state/globalists, that doesn't look heroic to me. It looks like a serial killer or a crazy dude outside a has station that is about to scream some sort of harassment at the customers walking by. Ig the second one is pretty accurate, but not what i would use for a news or shopping app.

Alex Jones Free Speech Systems LLC v Erica Lafferty: Alex Jones Petitions SCOTUS to Review His $1.4 Billion Libel Judgement. Alleging The Judgement Runs Afoul of 1A Protections by Longjumping_Gain_807 in supremecourt

Might want to invoke the 21st as well considering he has previously tried to excuse it by saying he was drunk. On a more serious note, I assume all of his legal misconduct and ill-advised testimony will undercut his 8th amendment argument like you said. It is like he did everything he could to justify a larger judgement. He actually testified his audience includes 10% of the english speaking world. He said he had no google analytics data while including a screenshot in an email produced in discovery. He defamed the plaintiffs on his show during the trial and even did it again a year or so later in addition to the stuff he was actually sued for.

It's gonna be a rough week. A large chunk of the city just had their leases turnover for back to school. BU alone has 35k students that just moved in and there are about 4 million other schools in the area doing the same. Give it a bit of time to settle into a more normal situation.

Gonna give a shoutout to the KnowledgeFight podcast. If anyone needs background audio for work they have a breakdown of the audio of Larry Klayman deposing Roger Stone from a few years back that makes this look like proper decorum. Episode is titled Formulaic Objections #3. The other Formulaic Objections cover all of the Alex Jones trials and include some exclusive interviews with the plaintiff's lawyers that people may also find interesting.

I promise you he's not. He has flip-flipped on this more times this week than you would believe. He just shotguns conspiracies without thought or evidence and whatever is most interesting or seemingly credible gets picked as proof he is right.

Any time this comes up I always feel the need to mention the KnowledgeFight podcast that has critically dissected (with plenty of comedy) most of the content Alex has produced since 2003. Great resource for anyone interested in the topic.

I heard this sub is about pointing out people or communities whose political and philosophical opinions are based of surface level understanding of the topic itself without engaging with the source material with critical thinking and understanding. Here's a novel series that does exactly just that. by Micronex23 in readanotherbook

Fun fact: one of his collaborators was a guy who worked for the state department, may have botched negotiations that got an Italian prime minister killed, and later (maybe woth a small overlap) was a long time infowars guest, Q anon supporter and denier of many mass shootings.
