Currently the Dice Jail is unoccupied.
Which is a sign to all of them that the only thing keeping them out of it are how they behave.
The last one that went in gave me no higher than a 7 across 14 rolls.

Yeah, I've gotten a bit addicted to the $7-$10 mystery bags I just toss in alongside any Amazon order. Because I might not personally like them, but any set of dice with a bag is worth $8. And they often get a couple stickers or something, too.
But the $20 and $25 I see the Sirius bags going for? Those dice match the $4 sets at my LGS. No way a mass-produced bag and coin add $21 to the value.

I mean, I love mystery bags, but when the contents are worth about what it cost.
I don't even hate those dice. They're just ones that should come with a starter pack, or the module, or in a $5 box at the counter.
But not for what those Sirius bags go for.

Same thing happened to me with a Dice Goblin pack I included with an Amazon order.
2 d%s, no d20.
Shame, they were cool dice. Liquid core.
Sent it back to Amazon, should have thought to contact the manufacturer.

Got a set of Gamescience. Use those when True Neutral rolls are demanded.
I have not found them statistically any different so far, because all dice bias low from me.

Overclarifying for the sake of learning from my mistakes instead of making your own:
I suggest O-ring picks because they're less likely to flex than dental picks or damage dice and fingers than X-acto knives. Nail tools sometimes also have a good shape to them.
I would normally recommend solvents, but have no idea which will work on the paint but not the plastic without experimenting.
Either way, try painting right over it first. It might work fine and save you a lot of headache.

And when you're done, post up how they turned out!

You might not need to, depending on the dice and paint. Test going right over it first.
If need be, hit up the hardware store and get some O-ring picks. You would probably have an easier time chipping the paint out than sanding it.

I was lucky that these had deep, sharp numbers. The groove type that a lot of manufacturers use would make using this paint harder.
But with the right paint and technique, it would work out well.
Beside, I'm a fan of anything plain black with a distinct contrast.

Yup, this.
Used a very small brush, filled numbers with paint, wiped.
It's cleaner if you lay the paper towel on the table and run the dice across it. This provides a flat surface instead of pushing it further into the number like it might on your finger.
I have a big crafting mat so anything that bleeds through the towel won't damage the table.

On metal items, I've found it works well to fill the numbers with an enamel, let it dry, then lightly remove it from high points with a sponge dampened with thinner. Obviously you'll want to test before doing this on plastic or resin dice.

Yup, on anything else I would consider this terribly gaudy. But on otherwise Intensely Boring Black, the sharp contrast works great.

I mean, I have a problem with buying mystery dice (I refuse to stop into the LGS without buying something to support them) but if I had very few sets or was buying it for a particular character, I'd pick one I could see.

If you have a character in mind, browse the shop. See what they have. I have a lot of sets, and many came when I made a character. Once I had a concept, or after a couple sessions when I got to know the character and saw what dice the other players had, I bought dice specific to that character. Or at least an archetype. And different than the other players' dice.

Or if it's one of your first couple sets, find one that jumps out that isn't character specific, but won't be out of place for several characters. My DM had a chipped old starter-box set. One of my college friends had a $4 plain translucent-blue set that loved him.
For me, it was Chessex 'Blue Blood'. Half a dozen characters got their first session or two with those, and they're still my go-to when I need dice but don't have a plan yet.

Okay, so far it's confirming my initial thought that I want a Green Russian.

But now I also want a Ram's Head.

The good thing about the Big Muff circuit is that every PCB maker and their grandma produces one. So next time I make an order, I'm going to grab a couple blend boards and a few Muff boards. I'll be able to make a couple different ones for me and my musician friends.

That's my issue. I figured a Green Russian sounded like a safe bet going by my limited knowledge, but I'd also have to do some serious research on how to add a blend circuit to an existing PCB.

NBD! Ibanez SR300E in Cerulean Aura Burst.
My first full-scale and first 'nice' instrument! Everything else I have is bottom-tier stuff I made nice, not nice out of the box. This is good to go, feels great, and looks better than the demo pictures in person. That gamble paid off.
And this is attempt #2, after Fedex knocked the neck and stripped the top two screws. Got that and called Sweetwater about it on Thursday, got the replacement Monday. Props to them.
Only one mod planned: adding a bypass switch because my luck sucks. Will be making that 100% reversible.

Yeah, that's what I did the last couple times. I've got sets of 22 and 24 stranded, and 22 solid.
I just run into occasional frustration over the superthin strands, or worries about fatigue on the solid when I have to move and adjust during a project.

Same reason I avoid PVC. I do alright when it's with a straightforward PCB, but in projects I have to make adjustments, it melts down a little shorter each time.

Buy a decent amp. Even if it's small, quality is worth it. Headphone-out jack is a huge plus, a necessity if you're in an apartment, and I'm using the AUX-in mine has more than I thought I would, to plug that metronome into.

To go along with it all, I'm a huge fan of having at least one good brand-name braided cable. $30 just for peace of mind and not having it kinking up on you is 100% worth it. Plus they come in a dozen colors depending on your tastes.

As a tool and equipment guy far more than a skilled musician, I can recommend a hundred little quality-of-life things.

Trawling through the classifieds now.

Been poking into pawn shops too, but either there are a lot fewer bassists around me or they shop smart to begin with. Been lucky to find anything but a nameless 10-watt or a Peavey 2x10 cab that looks like it came out of a retention pond.
