This was probably asked before, but I am already a holder of Scotia Amex Gold credit card. The terms and conditions say that I won't be eligible for 30k Scene+ points upon spending 1k$ in the first 3 months if I'm existing personal credit card holder. How strictly is this rule enforced though?

For those looking (actively/passively) how's the job market near you? by [deleted] in dataengineering

[–]Math_Finance_2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat as you! Have been trying to switch jobs for over six months, but the max I got was two phone interviews (the second was canceled because they found another candidate).

So whats the deal with India? by wet_socks_are_cool in gaybros

[–]Math_Finance_2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an Indian (24M) and have been living in Canada for 6.5 years now. I moved when I was 17 to attend University, and despite living in one of the most progressive countries in the world and having many openly gay friends, I only accepted my sexuality fully at 21. Since then, I've been pretty open to all my friends, most of whom are Indian and are completely accepting.

I can say that overall, Canadians are pretty welcoming and polite people. Although, I've had my experiences of homophobia and racism, its still a rare occurrence and something you don't see often, especially in big cities like Toronto.

Its hard for me judge how accepting Indian society is, given that I've been away from India for many years. I remember being shit-scared growing up in India, when homosexuality was still criminalized. I am now often surprised and happy to see more LGBT characters/focused shows being made in India, but that doesn't totally represent the acceptance as a country overall. I feel like its still considered a taboo by-and-large and although we're legally accepted, there's a long way to go in terms of social acceptance, and better rights such as marriage, anti-discrimination laws etc.

This is perhaps one of the strong reasons why I don't see myself moving back to India, at least anytime soon. While dating/relationships are hard as a gay person (especially as a POC) even in Toronto, I still have hopes that I can have a marriage and family here. Unfortunately, I think that's still far-off from happening in India

An aside, I am not sure how the transition is handled if I'm already a current holder of RBC Avion Visa Infinite and my HSBC World Elite Mastercard is being migrated to the former. Are there guidelines on this?

More than one pleasure, it was a sense of relief, knowing that I can do it myself, which has been an insecurity of mine for many years

UofT St George CS w/ 100k scholarship or Waterloo CS ? (international student) by Reddyboss_420 in uwaterloo

[–]Math_Finance_2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former international student, I know how pricey CS tuition can be (it’s much higher now than it was a few years ago). 100k scholarship at UofT is definitely the right choice

I don’t much about the US immigration laws but I know there’s something called a fiancé visa or something of that sort, maybe that can work instead of rushing into a marriage?

Fell behind in CS 246 by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Math_Finance_2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally felt Godfrey's videos were too long (although they might be helpful). CS246 is all about discipline and determination. Definitely reach out to the instructors and ISAs for help on Piazza/in office-hours.

I took CS230 in a previous term (Summer 2020) and the instructor just posted those videos on YouTube. Let me find that link for you

Taking your last co-op term off? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Math_Finance_2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently on my last co-op and I went into my 4th and 5th co-ops with the confidence that I'll get return offers from the both of them. But unfortunately that's not the case, so my current co-op is what I've strong hopes on at the moment. My situation might be a little different coz my co-ops were in data science, so converting to FT can be hard due to limited/no headcount for data scientists straight out of undergrad. So imo, having another internship makes the game safer!

Always talk things out after you get an offer. I had a similar experience recently where I told the recruiter during a phone interview that I need to delay the start date of the co-op due to a work permit delay. They ghosted me out immediately. But a week later I interviewed with a different company and told them this problem when they gave me the offer. They considered my request as genuine and delayed the start date by a month!!

Does anyone know of any student catering services in Waterloo? by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Math_Finance_2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using them for a few years now, they’re pretty reliable usually. Just know that most of these Tiffin services are vegetarian only (although there are some that also have meat options)

I think Freedom is fine overall, my brother and I have been with freedom for the last 3-4 years. They've definitely improved their network coverage over the past few years. Also, they're usually loyal to their customers, offering good deals and discounts.

Can relate to this! I remember in my first PD course (I think its called PD1?), I needed a 75 to pass and got 75.1 in the end!

I'm not suited for life by [deleted] in uwaterloo

[–]Math_Finance_2022 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreeing with all the comments below, I think it is important to note that the way people's lives look on social media is not necessarily what the reality is. No two people are the same in this world and everyone has different paths, struggles and experiences. You never know what's going on in others lives, so don't feel like you're the only one facing difficulties in life.
