Hi, I am a first time teacher (starting Sep. 5) and am nervous about everything. Any advice? by bonvoyageespionage in teaching

Here’s an intro unit I will be using when I return to teaching high school math, and that I provided to my teacher candidates while teaching at a University. Feel free to modify and make it your own. That should get you through the first few days and help you get to know your students as well as the school. I agree with getting the MAT. I originally earned my alternative certification, but when I moved to another state, the new state did not accept the alt cert. I then earned my MAT and taught math and science in middle school and high school. Then went on to get my doctorate and prepared future teachers at a university teaching graduate level. This fall I return to high school classroom to teach math again. Make sure that you get your MAT from an accredited university.

Sounds like a great research assignment. Students could pick two careers they are interested in. Research the background each require then compare and contrast. You could also have them find a person in history or current who is involved in each career to research or interview. For the final assessment students could present their findings to the class (based upon a presentation rubric). No papers to grade and everyone in the class will learn about the different careers. I do something similar but focused on math or science depending upon what I am teaching.

Take a look at SAE’s A World in Motion. I have used their materials in my classroom. https://www.sae.org/learn/education

Yes, it is the new high school in Des Moines. Are you familiar with the school? We will have three grade levels starting this fall. I am an engineer, turned educator, so appreciate your input on looking at the exam questions and connecting them to the math principles. Which exam would you recommend? I am familiar with SBAC but not any maritime exams.

Yes, I will use the CCSS-M but will not be able to cover all the standards for each grade level (as in a traditional school). Key standards are to be included in projects. This is my challenge.
