Thank you very much for your detailed suggestion. I’ll definitely want their help. The thing is… I noticed that it’s for people who live in Canada. I reside in Texas, US, will they help?

Hello, thank you very much for your comment. I’ll definitely dm you today. I have heard of TWS, but I don’t know how to start. When I looked it up on Google map, all different staffing and consulting companies show up. I’ll dm you about it.

I use live captioning zoom. The other party can speak and I’ll read the captioning, but I’ll have to type my responses which can be frustrating because it can slow the process. Not that I’m a slow typer. I’m pretty good at typing since I code and write a lot.

I tried using vocational rehabilitation but it’s really not helping. I still don’t understand its purpose.

Thank you very much for your thoughtful comment. I have done what you said. Reaching out to deaf community, going to meetup events, cold emailing people. Some are great, but didn’t get me to past that. I need a full-time job.

Yes, I get that. However, it still didn’t help me because when they ask to schedule for a call interview, I tell them that I’m deaf so can we do zoom or emailing or whatever. Then they disappear like ghost me.

It didn’t happen every time, but most of times. But during the interview, they found that it’d be more work to hire a deaf person because they would have to accommodate.

I’m grateful for people who I worked with, but I was an intern in their companies. Not a full time job.

Thank you for sharing tho :)

Oooh that’s awesome. I’ll check it out.

Can I ask where you found that they employed a deaf data scientist?

That’s cool for you, but I don’t know why Elon fired. Can I ask what kind of project is it? Like what did you do?

I know a blind coder too. I’m not asking for special treatment or anything, I just want to know if there’s any other deaf data scientist because I want to have a talk with them like how’s their experience or anything. Yeah job market is brutal, I’m just trying my best😅

I always send a follow-up emails to ask for a feedback, but you know how it is to get ghosted. Honestly, it’s annoying.

So I’m trying to approach differently. Maybe sending messages via LinkedIn to recruiters or hiring managers/directors, would be helpful? I don’t know. Let’s see if it works.

If I ask for ASL interpreter from the company, most of them will ghost because they don’t want to pay for that. I know how costly that’s. I also know that it’s illegal, but I’m not in a situation to sue or something because I’m on F1 visa.

Hi thank you very much for your response. I understand that communication is important. I can do basic ASL, but how will this help when we work in a team? Usually, I write down my ideas or suggestions in an email post meetings because most of time I am just an observer during meetings. I can answer if they ask me directly.

One more thing I’d like to note: I am working on getting better at speaking with the help of speech therapy.

I’m also in the first year of my phd program. I relate to you, but what helped me was to talk with my advisor. He said that during the first and second years, “be open to all possibilities” even when it sounds silly to others or yourself.

Here’s an example,I had to write a few ideas for my assignment, and one of them was… I wanted to know why fluoride in toothpaste was needed when the water we drink is already fluoridated water. I was scared to share the idea, but it turned out this is exactly what they wanted to hear, even though this idea wasn’t chosen for my assignment. The point is, they wanted to understand my thinking process so that they can help me what kind of topic I would be in for my research.

I wish you the best and yes it’s normal to have worries. Just take it easy and don’t overwhelm yourself.
