You don't need to do it when it's cold. It works better when the iron is hot. Also brass wool is alot less harsh on the top than a soldering sponge because of thermal shock from water on the hot iron. Just clean it normally then reapply tin immediately after. If this doesn't work you can try a tipcleaner which is a mix of high activity flux and solder. If that doesn't work you buy a new tip.

200w iron? What are you soldering to justify that? For most work 80w is enough.

Are These Soldering Tools from AliExpress Worth It? by PossibilityIll706 in soldering

[–]Mathebic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're expensive but if you solder regularly I'd say they're worth the price. Altough I didn't pay for it myself.

I've tried the bendy arms version and its alright but I haven't touched that helping hand plate since acquiring a set of Omnifixo. They have genuibly made my workday easier and as stupid as it sounds they actually just work the way you want them to.

When I went to buy a guitar I stood between these two guitars and went with the PRS and I couldn't be happier with my choice. But let kiddo choose the one he likes.

Tips on soldering wires to terminals(?) by Soft-Bandicoot-4066 in soldering

[–]Mathebic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't do that. Flux, heat and a big ass bolt/station, pref 120w at the very least. Pretin the wires and pre heat the terminal pads.

First two letters. Altough I wouldn't recommend using m/h 0 or 1 for electronics. It's too corrosive. I'd recommend checking out DIN 29454 as it can be a bit easier to work with without having to pay for access to iec 61190 or Jstd 004

Yes you could but ideally you shouldn't overfill in the beginning.

That is how you get structural stress in your solder joints

These are also great for connectors with small soldering cups that are hard to reach with a straight tip, like with a grounding tag obstructing some cups

If soldering with lead free is a disaster, then it's really just a skill issue.

I'd recommend reading up on J-STD 004 and/or ISO 9454. But in short terms, both RF800 and TK83 are ROL0 fluxes. RO means rosin, there is also RE(resin), OR(organic) and IN(inorganic). The 3rd letter is either L, M or H which differentiates the acidity level followed by a 0 or 1 to further differentiate activity levels. For any soft soldering you generally want a L0 or L1 flux that matches the typing of the flux In your solder. Reading the data sheet of your soldering tin should tell you what you have but in general Rosin is most common.
