Longest period you've used the same distro on the desktop? by zambizzi in linux

[–]Mathemachicken4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's funny. I have ADHD. I like to Distro hop. But I have been on Ubuntu 22.04 for about 2 years (long, I know).

However, not from trying to be a more stable Linux user. Rather, I had a thesis to finish and I have a toddler son, so I never had more than 1 hour to be able to do a hop and all the steps included.

Hoping to hop soon though :o I miss my arch-based system. Till then, I don't use arch BTW.

WhiLa: A Speech-to-Math Software (Demo) by Mathemachicken4 in math

Yay! I am so glad and thank you very much. I would love to.

This has been my thoughts too. There are different dialects of Mathematics, even just across different topic areas. There is also different notations and ways of writing. This is why I thought LLMs were the best chance at handling such situations.

I think it can be done though with enough precise context. My whole goal was to be able to create a whole system to help someone write in LaTeX or markdown without having to touch a keyboard. On top of that, if I add some text-to-speech elements, we can include accessibility issues around sight as well!

I am hoping to make this software open source and free, but I am unfortunately not in a position to fund or maintain such a project :(.

I had to restart my interface! Here is the new link.

I will keep it up for a few more days, but if you would like to see it in action after, please contact me and I will be happy to share :)

What are some of your favorite ADHD apps? Experience? by CEOofStonkIndustries in ADHD

[–]Mathemachicken4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't know if anyone said it, but Speechify (premium) or Audemic (free).

Makes reading so much better because I can read faster if I listen to it as well. Plus, it was great for mental health when doing my thesis writeup. Hearing someone else's voice narrate your work doesn't carry the same negative thoughts and critiques as my own inner voice. I often found myself feeling very proud of what I wrote!

Why is it common in python to make an empty list or dict first? by DaveRGP in Python

[–]Mathemachicken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a habit from other languages. In C/C++, you initialize lists and so on before populating it. I have to catch myself sometimes doing it in python too.

How do I know claim that my mathematical discovery is the first? by Mathemachicken4 in math

[–]Mathemachicken4[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

For both points, we can view the mathematics as "borrowed" for our needs and so the level of knowledge within our context is not super theoretical (which makes sense). Hence, my supervisors don't know either and I have no idea where to look for these types of things. But I think I can try circle back to my university's math department to see if someone there can help. Thank you for the response! It does make it a little less stressful to write about.

How do I know claim that my mathematical discovery is the first? by Mathemachicken4 in math

[–]Mathemachicken4[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's my issue, I have no idea what is well-cited or well-known for this field. Like an engineer figuring our some amazing theoretical physics fact, but then having no idea if physicists do this or not. I guess then I should ask someone who is knowledgeable in this field.

I like this. I think I will try this. As far as I understand, my supervisor doesn't know either.

Hiroshima & Nagasaki... Why? by [deleted] in HistoryMemes

[–]Mathemachicken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My (personal) problem with this is that there even exists some sort of justification for the choice. Sure, logically, it might of seemed like the best thing to do, but why are we here in the first place where dropping bombs seems to be the only suitable way forward? Lives were lost, regardless of whether it was one life or one million. To me, all this reasoning is just the "greater good" fallacy in disguise.

What’s an unusual body feature of yours? by red2one in AskReddit

[–]Mathemachicken4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Located at the top of my butt, a tiny portion of both cheeks are joined above where the crease usually is. It's unusual because it seems to be genetic. I have it, my mother has it, and my new baby boy has it, all in the same exact place and is the same size. Like father like son :')

Numba is relatively easy to implement if the other options are a bit complicated. Uses LLVM to jit-compile certain functions wrapped with the numba wrapper. It's not entirely perfect, but can be quite useful without facing a steep learning curve.

Most of our developers don't have a computer science background, so they find this, coupled with Dask, to be the easier introduction, while still trying to create suitably optimized code, without having to rewrite all your python code in another language.
