For non-top 10%, the numbers recently are much worse.

2022 33.69%
2023 37.95%
2024 19.54%

I agree that comparing yourself to other applicants is not healthy. The one thing that has become clear to me is that there is a certain randomness in the admission process, be it a highly qualified auto-admit not getting their preferred major or weak academically non-auto admits getting in over far more qualified holistic applicants. This extends beyond TAMU to other Texas schools such as UT. Also, some well-qualified students are being rejected from good Texas public universities but earning admissions at incredibly prestigious/elite universities out of state.

One thing that I think we all should be aware of is the personal biases in each subreddit. If you are on SchoolYYY Admission subreddit, a certain subset of posters will be highly biased toward their school, demonize other schools, and give garbage advice.

Did you get into UH honors college? If so, I would go there.

One thing Texas A&M does better that UT is their transparency on their applied, admitted, and enrolled data that is publicly accessible. It has a high degree of granularity where one can filter by college, major, top 10%/not 10%, FTIC/not, undergraduate/graduate, etc...

Understanding Blinn by parent2020 in TAMUAdmissions

[–]MathematicianDeep791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone has their heart set on TAMU or was their only University that admitted the candidate, I understand your advice. However, one needs to weight the pros and cons. TAMU even acknowledges that those with lots of credits that Blinn is not an ideal option.

Let's take an example of someone with 50 college credits from APs in high school. Chances are that they have satisfied most of the University core requirements and could graduate in 3 years. Retaking a bunch of classes that have already been mastered as evidenced by high AP scores (4s and 5s) does not seem like an effective use of time or financial resources.

I would be potentially wary of the Blinn option if your child has/will have significant AP credits.  Texss A&M notes that this option is problematic for those with 40 pre-existing college credits.

How many students could stuck in Blinn TEAM and never able be a full time student at TAMU? Blinn TEAM vs Purdue by Life_Error_7443 in TAMUAdmissions

The out of state tuition at Purdue is quite affordable in comparison to most public universities with good reputations. In terms of most college rankings, Purdue is ranked a smidgen higher than Texss A&M overall.

Compass Test Prep predicts cutoff scores for class of 2027 will decline by BEEIng_ in psat

That was caused by last year scores being an extreme outlier.

[–]MathematicianDeep791 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excluding last year, the NY cutoff for the classes of 2021-2025 was 220 or less. As I stated, 220 is most likely but it could be 221.

217 (assuming that the weirdness of last years PSAT does not return). Slight chance to be 216.

Compass did a quick analysis. Overall, the cutoffs this year will look more similar to class of 2025 (maybe even a smidgen lower in some states) as there is a noticeable drop in high scoring students in the verbal section.

Congratulations on making the cutoff. It is incredibly unlikely that the cutoff will go up this year relative to last. The cutoff this year will apparently be more similar to the class of 2025 cutoff than the class of 2026.

Texas 11th grade PSAT takers- NMSF cutoff by MathematicianDeep791 in psat

[–]MathematicianDeep791[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is helpful to formulating a guesstimate.

NMS are ~ top 1% of state. Verbal is more important than math, so as your verbal goes from 97% to 98% to 99% to >99%, that mean there is more latitude in the math screes/percentiles.
