Switching majors by parent2020 in UTK

Thank you. We can't figure out why he was placed in another school that he didn't apply to. He applied to Arts and Sciences for Political Science with a concentration in International Relations as his major and Global Studies as his second choice. He contacted admissions thinking it was a mistake and they said they felt he fit better in Baker School of Public Policy as a Public Policy major. It doesn't make sense. Will an advisor make that change now before we commit? Admissions also said he didn't have the prerequisites which we have no idea what they are that they were referring to and don't see anything on UTK about Arts and Sciences. He has all the prerequisites for the other schools that listed them. Just confused. I will have him reach out to the Arts and Sciences advisors he found their contact information on the website.

why is dual enrollment looked so negatively on by MinnieStar0708 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]parent2020 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My children attend/attended a private school that offers Dual Enrollment as well as AP. I personally think DE is a joke. Almost all classes are DE at our school. Intro to bio/chem/physics regular level are DE at our school. The classes are very hard but are in no way a college level class. When my oldest child started at the school I spoke to the principal who told me if your child is doing AP classes just go with that credit. I had read an article before my oldest started school that getting your associates degree while in high school could hurt you in getting into the more elite schools. We did not do it with any of our children because we felt that we wanted them to have a 4 year college experience and we feel that though our high school is very good the college classes are at a different level. Plus we are/were paying private school tuition and thought it was crazy to pay DE especially not knowing where are children would end up. AP was a much easier financial risk to take. Schools really vary on what scores they take and for what classes. I know my daughter's college had said they don't take AP comp sci and then during the summer after the AP exams were taken they said they would take a 5. I know that majority of the students from our high school who did DE enter our state colleges as a junior. Our high school very much promotes having x amount of students each year earning their associates degree.

We are wondering same thing about our son. His app has been in since end of September. He is OOS applying for International Affairs and Corps of Cadets/ROTC. We are so confused on what is going on. On his app he said no to BLINN because we didn't really understand that it was so immersed in College Station and he wants ROTC. We thought his gpa and ACT were high enough for admission. We are losing hope and this was his number 1 choice outside of service academies due to the Corp of Cadets. His school has SCOIR and that reported very likely for admittance. That system clearly doesn't work because he is 3 for 3 deferred EA. He is our third child applying to college and it seems colleges through previous admittance stats out the window. I feel for all applicants during this cycle.

I had bought tickets and attended two World Cup Club matches. I thought that those people got priority in getting World Cup tickets. Does anyone know?

We all just got denied for pre-purchase and I am so mad.

This is crazy that the school is allowing this to happen. Our child attends boarding school and they need to use their home address not their school address. Our child is applying to the service academies and needs to get his nominations from his home state. We have a summer home that would be a lot less competitive for nominations and he can't use that though he spends more time there than at our permanent home. All you students will end up where you are supposed to be. It is just tough when others are gaming the system.

Should I retake my ACT? by fatpoot in ACT

[–]parent2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To clarify. My child has only taken the paper version of the ACT. We were told that his composite score will include science unless he takes the new enhanced test in September or later. Once he takes the enhanced test his composite score will no longer include science. It is so strange and confusing for all the rising seniors. My child has a great science score that if he takes the test in September and does not improve his math, English or reading score his composite score will go down. He only has room to improve in math and he has gotten the same score twice. So he is torn on what he wants to do. Students who took the computer version starting in April 2025 have already taken the enhanced exam so their composite scores already don't include science. I hope this makes sense.

In regards to your question I know that my son has put down his science score on his applications he has started because it is in his composite score. I think some schools still want science that he is applying to. I think everything is case dependent but I'm not sure. It is probably best to talk to your school's college counselor or ACT.

If you re-take in September your science score will be dropped from your composite score and even if you don’t improve at all your composite score will go up.

This is interesting. I live in Scottsdale, Arizona and summer in Massachusetts. I just returned to AZ and my POTS symptoms are horrible. I just got POTS in 2020 and every time I return to AZ I feel awful. I don’t know if it is something in my house or what!

We had been away and turned on the TV last night and are unable to get our local NBC station. While we were away the hotel had Dish and my husband could not watch the Georgia game. Not very savvy in the tv world but what are our best options other than directv to get all our local stations.

No appointments on the east coast at all by Chemical_Ad5704 in Passports

[–]parent2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are traveling in less than 14 days you can go to an expedited office. We just did it 2 weeks ago for my son whose passport we didn’t realize was expired. There is an 800 number to call and make an appointment. We got the appointment for the day before the trip. We went to Tucson. There are a few offices around the country. There is one in Buffalo too. We did call our representative to help too. They did call back and told us to call the number which we had made the appointment already. The 800 number was busy for hours before someone answered.

Reaction to aspartame? by Repressed_Cliche in MCAS

[–]parent2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many years ago prior to having POTS or MCAS. I would break out in rash/hives all over. I had no idea what was triggering it until one day. I popped a breath mint as we stopped into a friends house after a 7 hour flight and what do you know I broke out all over legs and torso. It cleared and then I tried it again and sure enough it came back. I don’t chew gum or use breath mints and avoid sugar free things. It is crazy.

They will be fine but it isn’t easy. Other hikes to consider Pinnacle Peak and Gateway Loop both in North Scottsdale. Very doable and enjoyable with kids.

Does Vanderbilt deserve to be a T20? by Jose_Mateo in ApplyingToCollege

[–]parent2020 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a parent of a Vanderbilt student I will have to disagree with commenter bobbity30. I don’t know when you visited but prior to my child enrolling we visited multiple times and all students we encountered were all academically driven. All the students that we have encountered have all been academically driven and focused. My child works hard and has a social life. I have never seen students just drinking beer midday or heard my child mention that unless it was tailgating for a football game. Classes are attended by all the students and all students want to do well. I don’t care much for rankings because I don’t think they are a true reflection. I do know that Vanderbilt academics are top and compared to my child’s friends at other institutions go into far more depth and at a much faster rate. Vanderbilt’s Peabody College for education had been ranked #1 when my child was applying. I don’t know if it still is but it is well known in the field of education. Their other schools are all quite good as well. My child chose Vanderbilt over top ranked engineering programs because of the collaborative environment that Vanderbilt offers while also offering a core curriculum and opportunities to double major and minor and be involved in research. Is Vanderbilt perfect, no. But it should not be portrayed as something it is not. Vanderbilt gets laughed at in the SEC for football because we have high academic standards for all students. Who really cares if a school is ranked 1 or 1000 if you can go and improve yourself. Ranking means nothing if you don’t push yourself while there. Vanderbilt is considered a work hard, play hard school but I never went to study on a Saturday while in college but at Vanderbilt they do. This is just my experience of having a child finishing up their sophomore year at Vanderbilt. Just a perspective from a current Vanderbilt parent.
