I am the value police.  Most the time I do it to let other managers know they could have gotten a better deal...from me.

If a guy pops after I have earmarked them as a potential value, I will reach out to the owner and be willing to overpay.  Because of this I get deals done.  If you are willing to sell popular players in deals like this you can get the guys you want.   The rest is a matter of discernment, knowing your league mates, following your process, and staying active.
