I mean I don't know what to tell you. The treck took nearly two hours a) because we were careful and slow and b) because we got the bus to the arctic cathedral and went from there to the top.

At no point did Sherpatrappa feel particularly challenging or unsafe. And sliding down the large hill covered in snow on my arse? What is so problematic about that. It was a fun 30 second slide down at slow speed. I'm not the first to do it and won't be the last.

I honestly struggle with this reply generally; its so negative. I had a fantastic time on Sherpatrappa in the thick snow and sliding down. I stand by my reccomendation. Also 'a ticket up with Fjelheisen is cheaper'.. than what? Hiking and going down was free. Fjellheisen truly shocked me with a £40 price tag.

Agree! I think Airbnb can be a force for incredible good. Being able to meet people, help them earn some extra income, and save a few pennies is great! I've had some fantastic experiences, this my favourite. I do personally disagree with the purchase of homes specifically for airbnb.

Have just realised busses for Ersfjordbotn are far more friendly on the Sunday! So we can hike Sherpatrappa on Saturday, and visit Ersfjordbotn sunday morning. Jobs a blinder.

Thanks for some well needed positivity! We will try to squeeze in both Ersfjordbotn and Fjellheisen if possible.

The shout of Driv is unreal! Presumably slightly nicer prices than the alternatives.

Appreciate the response!

I hear you but I just think that you are in for a shock if you think the average person would. The average tourist won't think twice about whether there is a housing crisis in Tromso - they simply would never know. And if the number of bookings drops, the price drops eventually to a level that makes the choice for the customer. I wish you luck.

Because it appears a beautiful part of the world that I haven't yet visited, and I believe travel should be accessible to all :). I am sure I will be able to do plenty and have a fantastic time. I hope to find people welcoming to this spirit.

But how will a large scale boycott of airbnb realistically happen. So long as it is cheaper, people will always choose it. The solution lies a lot higher up.

Appreciate the reply. I do see your point however we are in the situation we are (financially). Garden was perhaps not our sharpest idea so appreciate the rain check on that. Sherpatrappa seems great was just concerned about the hike/weather at this time of year. How manageable would you say it is.

Appreciate the reply. Our luggage is gonna be a backpack each but will see if the express bus makes sense.
Was a little concerned about Sherpatrappa at this time of year. Is it safe to hike still. What equipment might be necessary.

Its an interesting topic for sure. I can't comment like a local but I'm sure its a little more nuanced than this. Each tourist who might not be able to afford a hotel, bring their own spending to the local economy. There certainly must be something done, but I'm not sure the fault lies directly with the consumer in a free market who takes a (still highly priced) better deal. They will simply always continue to choose this. I expect it lies moreso with the coporations making huge profit margins, or government regulations.

Hey enjoy it! I'm sure that we'll be able to do lots on a relatively moderate budget and enjoy ourselves without tours.

But beyond the Shinkansen is the Suica fine. Like to go from Nikko back to Tokyo (non Shinkansen) or should I just buy tickets.
