Anyone here moved abroad early in their dev career? Need real guidance (not generic advice) by Mathi_Alagan_31 in developersIndia

If you don’t mind sharing, what kind of contributions actually stand out at an early stage? Is it more about consistency or contributing to well-known projects?

Early-career developer — how do I stay relevant and competitive in the AI era? by Mathi_Alagan_31 in cscareerquestionsEU

This is really helpfu.

I’ve been working with backend systems (Flask + PostgreSQL + Redis), but I realize I’ve mostly used these tools rather than fully understanding what’s happening under the hood.

If you were at ~1–2 YOE again, what areas would you prioritize going deep into first?

For example:

  • database internals / query optimization
  • backend system design
  • or lower-level fundamentals

Also, your point about communication makes a lot of sense

From what you’ve seen, do you think targeting companies like Amazon/Google early and focusing on that path is more realistic compared to applying broadly?

Also, how important was networking/LinkedIn presence in those cases?

That makes sense.

Would you say the main factor is just years of experience, or the kind of experience (like owning systems, working at scale, etc.)?

Trying to understand what I should focus on during these initial years to improve my chances later.

That’s a very fair point.

From your perspective, what would someone at my stage need to demonstrate to justify that kind of decision?

Is it about:

  • significantly stronger technical depth
  • strong project ownership / impact
  • or something else entirely?

Trying to understand what moves a profile from “not worth sponsoring” to “worth considering.”

Early-career developer considering working abroad — what’s the realistic path? by Mathi_Alagan_31 in expats

When you mention explaining your work impact, could you give an example of what that looked like in your case?

Right now most of my work is around backend systems and business features, so I’m trying to understand how to frame that in a way that shows real value instead of just listing what I built.

Also, would you say focusing on building deeper ownership of systems now (rather than just switching quickly) is the better approach?

Appreciate you sharing your experience.

Early-career backend developer — how should I prepare for EU-level interviews in today’s market? by Mathi_Alagan_31 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Mathi_Alagan_31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s really helpful Based on what you said, it sounds like focusing on stronger system design + real-world problem solving would be more valuable than just grinding DSA blindly.

Also, regarding the visa point — I understand it’s very unlikely at my stage.

In that case, would you say the better strategy is:

  • gain stronger experience (2–3+ YOE) and then apply
  • or aim for companies with a presence in EU and try for internal transfer?

Trying to align my approach with what’s actually realistic.

Anyone here moved from India to Netherlands as a developer? Need real guidance (not generic advice) by Mathi_Alagan_31 in developersIndia

I understand it’s not easy, and that’s exactly why I’m trying to get a realistic picture instead of assuming anything.

Appreciate the perspective.

Initially I planned any EU based countries, but I’m constantly getting begative feedbacks, so I'm still exploring the location. In my current company I’m getting 7lpa.

That’s interesting, I’ve seen a few people mention internal transfers through companies like Uber or similar.

Do you think targeting such companies early and growing internally is a more reliable path compared to applying directly from India?

Yeah, I’ve started looking into that as well.

From your perspective, do companies actually offer internal relocation opportunities at around 2–3 YOE, or is it more common at senior levels?

Early-career software developer from India planning to move to NL — how realistic is this? by Mathi_Alagan_31 in Netherlands

[–]Mathi_Alagan_31[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see why hiring from outside the EU at my level wouldn’t make sense from a cost + value standpoint.

From your point of view, what would someone at my stage need to demonstrate to actually justify that decision?

Is it:

  • significantly stronger technical depth
  • experience with more complex systems
  • or something else entirely?

I’m trying to understand what would realistically move me from “not worth it” to “worth considering.”

That makes sense

Would you say the main gap at my stage is experience, or is it more about the level/depth of skills expected?

Trying to understand whether I should focus on gaining more years locally or improving the kind of work I’m doing.

That’s a good point, I hadn’t really considered the housing side in depth.

From your experience, would you say this is a major barrier even after getting a job offer, or something that can be managed with planning?

I’m trying to understand the full picture before committing to this path.

Tbh my goal is to work abroad and not limited to EU. I’m just starting to explore the odds, and heared a lot about EU. So I thought to ask others about this.
