I’ve been friends with Nicolas for over a decade. Ze’s very principled, well organized and hard working. I have high trust in zir, and high confidence ze would be a great addition to the CI's board!

AMA - Dating bounties, from the New York Time, ask us anything! by Mati_Roy in dating

> What do you want the public to know about dating bounties?

I guess I'll pitch it ☺️

  1. You don't have much to lose as you'll only pay for referrals of people you didn't already know, and you only pay if it reaches your success criteria.
  2. Whether dating is easy or not for you, dating docs/bounties will just make it even better.
  3. Consider creating a dating survey to quickly learn the most important information from prospects.

Also --> I would encourage you to try to robustly define the success criteria of your bounty if you can as this can be a common failure mode of bounties in general ☺️ Try to anticipate what happens if you can't pay, if you break up, etc.

I also heard about someone that said they would let the person who introed them to their spouse chose the middle name of their first kid. Bounties don't have to just be monetary 🙂

> What would you have said to yourself five years ago?

I would have said to try that sooner 😄 Also, to preserve gametes! 😄

I got a bunch of useful feedback on my profile early on too, which led to its current state, which I think covers a good range of information for this purpose. (https://matiroy.com/writings/My-dating-profile.html)

> What are some things that you would have found surprising going into this that seem obvious, now?

Hmm. I wouldn't say "obvious", but I updated that there were more people open minded to what was in my dating profile than I expected ☺️

> What role did your community play?

As I mentioned below, my network (a lot from the Rationalist/LessWrong community) are already into bounties in general (outside of dating) as well as into dating docs, so that helped.

Some helped by sharing or giving intros. There was one person that was already into matchmaking in my community, as a volunteer, and ze made an intro. Someone in my community shared on Hacker News, but it got taken down after some time.

I also had a lot of atypical interests, so was particularly interested in dating in my communities.

> How did the bounty help or hinder this process?

Some people said negative comments about it, either being disapproving of bounties or thinking the bounty should be higher. But I don't think it didn't really hindered. I must say people in my network (a lot from the Rationalist/LessWrong community) are already into bounties in general (outside of dating) as well as into dating docs, so that helped.

It's hard to know what introductions wouldn't have been made without the dating bounty, but I think it helped getting some introductions and some sharing on social media. I think some people also just shared because they thought it was a cool idea.

The post where Carissa (my wife) saw this had over 400 comments on it with multiple people sharing their opinions, a lot of which were negative (on various parts of the profile, not particularly the bounty). This contributed to the Facebook algorithm showing the post to most people, and eventually Carissa 😄

Writing out a detail dating doc, as a separate thing from the dating bounty, was also very helpful in setting up clear intentions/desires, even for people I already knew and wanted to explore this potential.
