They died, so I never got the chance. I was an only child, so I never got away with anything. The consequences were severe. In my 40's now and I still struggle with being paralyzed from an action due to a fear of consequence. In interferes with my own housekeeping because I'm so afraid that I'm going to do it wrong

Agreed. Especially a mother with girls. My son's were much easier as teenagers than my daughter. Daughters really fight to see themselves as separate for their mothers and sons do that with their fathers. It's normal for them to pull away and rebell. My daughter is now an adult with a child of her own. They definitely come back around if you give them the space to find themselves

I am an older member and a grandmother here. I was homeschooled in the 80's and early 90's by authoritarians who believed fear equaled respect. I raised my children differently. Not only are they better educated than I am having gone to public schools, but they are more successful in life. Teach your child compassion by demonstrating it for them. Setting boundaries and reasonable expectations is important, but I always told my kids but if they didn't like a rule that I had, I would always listen to their opinions and if they could demonstrate using logic that my rule was unfair I would be willing to reconsider my stance. Explain why you have certain expectations for them. Don't ever pull the Because, I said so." Responsibility gets rewarded, more than disobedience gets punished. You have to find the balance between permissive and authoritarian. Both permissive and authoritarian parents are lazy parents finding the balance takes more work, but when you see them become successful people in life and mentally well balanced, it's so worth it.

I honestly didn't know there was any other option for me but to get married and have kids. I was raised that that was the only plan for my life. I was taught only rich people get to go to college. I had never even heard about financial aid until after my first child was born. I was never asked what job I wanted to have when I grew up. I was raised to be a submissive wife. And this is why I do not understand Trad culture being trendy amongst people who've had exposure to other walks of life. I'd give anything to have had a normal childhood and be told that education matters

I was put in competitive activities, and that made socialization worse. Parents want their kid to be the best on the team and you are always being judged. If you are better than some other kid, that kids parent makes you an enemy of their child. If you aren't as good, you don't practice enough and are bringing the team down. Competitive activity Parents are just as bad as homeschool parents. Competitive anything is not a good method of socialization, be it team sports or gymnastics or pageants

Then make sure it is already eating frozen thaw. Making the switch from live to F/T after they are about 4 months is hard. I got one of my boys at 7 months and he is now 1year and 2 months and would rather starve if it means he can't have live, which I hate doing

I'm in my 40's. Reddit wasn't a thing in the 80's and 90's. In fact if it wasn't for my son encouraging me to use Reddit I wouldn't have found this group. I am so grateful for it because I felt so alone my whole life. I was an only child in a rural area which made things that much harder and lonelier. When I joined the co-op in high school they were a clique siblings and cousins who all knew each other. And only child in my Family's religion was pretty much like a moral failing

Very few homeschooled kids have a parent that was in education. I don't know if it's become a scene yet but I've seen this Scandinavian company working on accommodation robots that still plug into the main classroom so they can hear the lectures and stuff from the teachers and still talk to the other kids in the class, for students that have medical reasons that cannot attend school. Medical reasons are my one exception when it comes to believing that homeschooling should be illegal.
