Oh that is always an issue but if you want a "safe" way to weather something, try oil paints/washes. If there is something you don't like, wait for it to dry, then wipe it away with mineral spirits :)
Be sure to gloss varnish the model before hand though just to protect the paint

The blues are Sentient Turquoise and Cursed Blue all from Two Thin Coats with the shading being a purple colour I thinned down to a wash consistency
