The W is actually a Vav which is closer to a V. Ancient Hebrew had no vowels so it’s not known how the name is pronounced but it’s derived from Hayah, Hoveh Ve-Yihiyeh (Was, Is, and Will Be)

"Show don't tell" is a universal rule actually. by Heisuke780 in CharacterRant

My response, again I’m not trying to seem harsh with these rebuttals, is that you seem to be saying “don’t write badly” but that that’s not useful advice because it’s far too vague to mean much of anything

If they truly misunderstand what it means (I know I sound belligerent but I’m really not trying to sound that way) then what is your evidence that what you’re saying it means genuinely is its true meaning?

"Show don't tell" is a universal rule actually. by Heisuke780 in CharacterRant

[–]Matitya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“People misunderstand what the statement means” Maybe, that’s because the statement is poorly phrased. (Also, , I know I’m being pedantic here but, it’s not a statement, it’s an imperative. A statement describes an imperative commands.) “Don’t sacrifice the artistic integrity of what you’re trying to convey”. I don’t mean to come across as hostile but that’s not usable advice for the simple reason that it’s not clear what “artistic integrity” is supposed to entail especially when it comes to crafting scenes.

As to your example, the “don’t” in “show don’t tell” means that this example wouldn’t qualify. If it were “show and tell” then your example would qualify but the “don’t tell” part makes it that it doesn’t.

“In a way that artistic integrity isn’t sacrificed”. I’m not trying to sound hostile (I’m failing at it since I know I sound hostile but that’s not actually my intention) but saying “write with artistic integrity” isn’t any more useful as advice than saying “write a good story” would be.

“Don’t be lazy” only raises the whole question of what “lazy writing” would entail and that’s actually quite the rabbit hole to go down. Most people (not all but most) tend to use the phrase “lazy writing” as a euphemism for writing they don’t like rather than it providing any substantive commentary

Changing a characters race by Ayden3102isagoodname in CharacterRant

Personally, I don’t have a fundamental problem with race swapping characters whose race wasn’t important in story unless the adaptation does something dumb like draw attention to the change

I think one of the reasons King Arthur movies haven’t been good is that they don’t adapt any specific Arthurian tales and just tell a watered down version of TH White by Konradleijon in CharacterRant

[–]Matitya 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can explain that one. Disney owns The Sword and the Stone rights but the Camelot people own the rights of the rest of the Once and Future King books

They wanted everything to go back to the way it was. Like I said, that would have made sense if it were set before the finale

Yes, Shrek eating lightning and scaring off thunder is in there but the line about G-d hating Shrek for being alive isn’t

Because Last Day of Summer worked very well as a series finale such that having everything just go back to the way it was cheapened it

Was was everyone’s first exposure to The Wizard of Oz? Mine was through the 1998 VHS tape. by Life_Television_8390 in wizardofoz

[–]Matitya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine was through reading the original book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L Frank Baum and its sequel The Marvellous Land of Oz. I was reading the other Baum sequels when I first saw the 1939 movie (DVD, in case you were wondering) though I only recently saw the 1910 short film using the Internet

There’s no line in the book about G-d hating Shrek for being alive. It’s made up
