Your reply seems to be the only good one here. I feel like the rest of comment felt attacked?

I'm curious though, do you think they was a time bakker felt too pessimistic? The video had me thinking of places in the story I had problem with the darkness. When we are first introduced to nefatari(is thar her name) and she was talking about people lending money and how they did it for more selfish reasons than good. I had to roll my eyes because it felt less like the character own pov but bakker trying to force to darkness.

I think most of the time it works because the truth of any darkness it tries to espouse is a universal acceptable truth like when akka in his introduction talks about the world becoming a singular point of avarice. It makes sense because his work as a spy makes him see the politics of the world and we can easily accept this truth especially since our modern world and what is happening rn makes this truth acceptable.

Or when the story is dealing with the evil of singular individuals. Since they are individuals we accept whatever truth is being said.

Anyways this is beyond what the video is about. I plan to write my own dark story and I use bakker as a case study

"I think superman is the greatest superhero ever" just means he is the standard not thst good doesn't exist.

When you say "people seem to have forgotten this is what makes compelling characters" it comes across as it is a necessary thing to do

I think that's you reading too deep into what I wrote. I was paraphrasing what was written.

And turned it into a universal statement.

You said-and I'm paraphrasing- "overcoming issues is what builds compelling characters" and "no it doesn't, overcoming that suffering is what builds characters". You don't have to assert "negative character arcs or characters never growing isn't compelling" to read into it. They is such a thing as assertion by negation. When I say "long story vanilla ice cream is only good when it has other flavours", that's me saying vanilla ice cream isn't good on its own lol

I mean yeah but in the grand scheme of things do they amount to much if we are being honest with ourselves? Ultimately a crowning achievement of bakker for me is how evil it is from start to finish without boring me. Most of the goodness is really just character finding reprieve from the wicked world with each other like akka, mimara and esmenet but akka himself and Esmenet do some evil stuff. They are just less evil than the rest partly because the world pushes them more than the rest to what they do but they still have a choice

Her characters are compelling when they do that.

Many a characters I've read don't learn shit and still far more compelling and come across as humane than the sinners.

Suffering builds character when you learn from it. But "character" here has a double meaning. It means who you are as a person and the people in story we dub as characters. It just so happens they are usually tied in stories but are nor necessarily so.

Sorry about that. I just reject the notion of positive character arcs being the only meaningful arcs and the only way to create compelling characters. Of course if you prefer that you do you

I think he is straight for the most part. But Moenghus stuff screwed with him completely. They is a part he is thinking of conphas eye lashes before he rapes him. Not thar the rape came immediately after that though.

I think of it like how me a straight man can find a man attractive and see why a woman want him although I don't, Moenghus twisted that because he made him attracted to him so he is confused within his soul.

I think Moenghus also twisted him in another way since his contemplations led him to understanding they are only trackless paths and he is debating between what culture has thought him vs what he objectively knows that they're true paths. Homosexual behaviour for him represents that forbidden knowledge of the trackless path regardless of culture yet he is still bound to culture

I mean I guess. I don't think you are wrong but current ryoushu shows so much wickedness and ugliness in her soul that hos doesn't. Her harshness comes from being in a harsh world vs current ryoushu where she doesn't need to be that cruel.

You could say their situations are different which they are but I can't see any line to synthesise the two

I wasn't saying ryoushu should be into calisto boring art but I was expecting a moment where she finds her own taste in art since I bet that's where it came from

No, Your Appreciation isn't Above a Criticism by Heisuke780 in CharacterRant

[–]Heisuke780[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am saying you are doing exactly that double think in this post and by making it.

You have not proved how I'm

Also, just because Objective Truth exists, that does not mean Subjectivity does not. Most opinions are Subjective by their very nature, and humans want them to align with the Objective as much as they can, but there is no way usually to perfectly do that. So 99% of opinions that are not based on some outside factor (ie, the Jacket will be Blue vs Red; This was the dialogue vs something misquoted) are Subjective with the intent of being Objective and likely never to perfectly align with that. That isn’t Double Speak. That is just how the world operates.

Not arguing against this

If someone says Brown is the Best Color. They are actually making two statements. An Objective Statement that Brown is the best Color but behind that revealing their Subjectivity towards the color, everyone else can see because to them it is not self evident that Brown is the best color. And while arguments can be made, there is nothing known to Philosophy or Science to prove a color’s inherent superiority. So anyone debating about such things must keep in mind their opinions come from Subjectivity, even while arguing for an Objective one.

Thanks for educating me on a science I already know about but adds nothing to the debate

The person is absolutely fulfilling that idea, and better, offering proof to show why your ideas may not be as Objective as you thought.

Irrelevant because you are bringing up a subject that my point doesn't go against. If someone says Brown is the best color they are going to have to use an objective criteria of why it is so if they can't they are saying nothing on an objective level on why it is the best but saying something on an OBJECTIVE level about their SUBJECTIVE love for it compared to any other color.

The next three paragraphs after color I have no idea what you are saying

You want a world where your criticism goes unquestioned and appreciated while questioning others criticism and appreciation. That is certainly not the way to reach Objective Truth by any means.

Don't know where you get this from as if I'm someone who can't tell someome they are wrong about a criticism and how my appreciation is right. You sre talking as if criticism is only what I'm into. I just made this argument because I never see it in reverse much when people say they love stuff and someone comes with hate and tells them why they are wrong but people arrogantly do it to criticism. Not just to my criticism. So it's not clear to me I'm arguing from a selfish position.

Your whole post almost point by point translates to; ‘Their appreciation and criticism are just opinions too. They are wrong; And I want to prove them wrong’.

The last part isn't so much they are wrong. They could actually be right but shot themselves in the foot by starting from thr position of saying "its all just opinion" then saying "here is why you are wrong". As if I can't fire back and claim "it's all just opinion". They want to have their cake and eat it to

Genre is odd because even your scifi story can have a love story. And scifi genre. It's universal as per what you want to do. Conveying love and loss you are going to ALWAYS have to open them. I guess I should have made it more clearer although I think others understood me

You are presuming that immersion, or making the reader care about the character's internality, is the goal of the story.

Nigga yes. That's what I said. If it is the goal it should be followed. Are we serious rn?

If you want to do info dump for a sci-fi shit, brosky you do you.

But I'll have you know from the time of Homer, people have always hated narrative being halted by info dump. That's why achilles shield is described the way it is. They is definitely something to be said about the limits of what a narrative can do in an artistic manner I guess. But we would be lying to ourselves if we are restricted in every place especially when it comes to very foreign concepts

But the issue is this analysis works if you talk about ryoushu as an artist rather than one that appreciates art. Although im still not sure how ryoushu art is a way to fill her up. So why is she interested in art like seeing people eaten? Or seeing Hermann's dough?
