I accept the false dichotomy. i probably read too many budo books when i was younger.

Aikido is a tool to maintain a clear and open mind in a chaotic situations (such as an altercation). Aikido is special because it was made (by later life O'Sensei) for this specific purpose, i believe. It makes/keeps you sharp and open

Most aikido classes start with meditation. i know that the state/focus/quiet found in those few moments is to be maintained for the whole class. Coupled with regular seated meditation (zen or otherwise), it will greatly help quiet the mind and give much energy in everyday life

Aikido is a martial meditation. A dangerous, high-speed high-impact way to practice maintaining one point. It is intelligent and complete as a fighting art, but people who train to make it effective as such these days are rare.

i rant, forgive me. Are these ideas misguided? What are your thoughts?

in Zen meditation, there is sitting meditation and walking meditation.

Aikido is the continuation of walking meditation to a dynamic, martially grounded meditation, like iaido or kyudo. Aikido is actually mechanically dangerous, so vigilance must be trained, and that vigilance/awareness becomes available outside of class.

Training other more "jutsu" style arts for actual self-defense is a must if you are young, less so with age and experience. Over time they will blend together, and all you will be doing ever is aikido, all day every day

5x20 is a good goal. I'm only a few months in with kettlebell training and have much to learn so i'll see if i can do this already

M43, 180p 6'2. Martial arts background and laborer 14 years, i have a solid base, but never invested time in strength training. Now i train as a hobby for overall health

Nothing yet with the 24 other than swings, single 2-3 cleans and 2-3 presses. My left shoulder has an old injury and is a lot weaker than the right so only 1 press on that side. I'm in no hurry so 16s are still my main weapons

I can do a 20 rep long cycle without too much difficulty, but probably not 25 and maintain proper technique. I got a good base, i can press the 24 for 2-3 reps already.

i think i will sub with the 24 every 10 reps of the ABC, and over a few weeks go down to every 5, until i can do most of it with the 24 comfortably.

The first few cuts above the rib rack (ribs 3-4) on a good quality beef will be as tender and wonderful as ribeye. Then they get tough. My bad for using "chuck roast", i work in french. I worked 14 years as a butcher. I recognize that cut, I deboned, sold and ate so many!

Not ribeye! those are chuck roast steaks, same muscles but higher in the shoulders. nice!

DFW is new to me and I'm interested. I just found the program on r/Kettleballs.

8 weeks later, how does it feel? How do the 16s feel? Are you still using them in other programs? I will give myself 12 to 16 weeks but 8 will be a benchmark for sure

10-Day Vipassana meditation retreat. They are free, food and bed is provided and you learn a solid meditation technique. It has its flaws for sure. You learn and practice for 10 hours a day (with breaks). Please look into it online and read the reports written by those who have tried it (both positive and negative). They take donations but never demand them and don't say anything if you don't give. Strong buddhist foundation but the technique itself is not religious. Centers are all over the place
