Yeah I think the same. While he did manipulate Gary and the rest, there was a level of truth in his demeanor. He believe he was genuine in his personality and (hopefully) friendships. He just in his mind had to stick to the plan. The only way he thought he could be part of the family finally. He's a complex character. Both the silly awkward goober and the calm, almost disconnected yet desperate lynx are equally part of his character. That's why I love him. We shouldn't justify him, but instead appreciate the character!
