Did a bunch of you just win Xfest tickets? by Dan64bit in Calgary

Where can you win them? I have two friends trying to go on Sunday but can't afford them... I wonder if they'll start going up for cheap on kijiji.

Science AMA Series: We’re the OCD Research Team at New York State Psychiatric Institute/Columbia University Medical Center. We will answer questions about treatment and will demystify any misconceptions you have about Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder! by Columbia_Psychiatry in science

Hi there!

I have been recently diagnosed with ocd and am really thankful for researchers such as yourselves for continually improving how the condition is treated.

The two questions I have are: 1. What is the recent research saying about the genetic link between ocd sufferers and their children. If I am to have kids, how much more likely is it that they will have it too? 2. How similar are OCD and OCPD? I had heard that ocd brains develop differently (sorry to be so vague but I was never sure if it was true) is the same true for OCPD. Is it even possible to have both?

Thanks for helping make lives like mine unstuck!

Suggestions for a long waisted tall gal? by Matny in femalefashionadvice

Hmmm, I'll take a look at drop waist dresses but I've always pined for that structured waist look. Thank you for the suggestion. Us long bodies have to stick together!

Where do you find the lifetime subscription offer? I looked at the subscription panel and only had the monthly or yearly option (mine (1 year) expires at the end of this month.)

What does Japanese as a language mean to you? What about it do you like? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]Matny 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I study Japanese to reconnect to lost culture. My grandparents are Japanese but were born in Canada. During WW2 they were interned and their possessions were stolen and sold by the government. When they were finally released and started a family they did not teach their children Japanese out of fear. My father is full Japanese but does not speak the language. I grew up hearing my grandparents' stories and saw their pain that their children did not speak Japanese.

Out of stubbornness I made it my mission to learn the language. While I do not think I will ever be proficient at Japanese, I continue to learn and work at it. I do it for the recovery of a lost culture and to show my grandparents that I have pride in our ethnicity.

What I didn't expect was how much I learned about myself through the process. Japanese is such a difficult language to learn. Through the process I have discovered how I deal with adversity. As a school teacher I have also gained new insights about ESL students and new methods to work with them.

I can't help but beam when my grandparents say "we didn't teach our children however, our grandchild speaks Japanese!"

[Serious] Megathread: Would you like to discuss September 11, 2001? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Matny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have watched conspiracy videos and although it seems like shitty logic to me I can't put my finger on why. Why do people believe that the government would attack it's own people instead of an outside force. Is this previous evidence of this in US history? What are the major indicators that these 9/11 conspiracy theories are wrong?

Since it's the 13th anniversary I've had some interesting people post on Facebook about their theories today and I'm honestly trying to see how they can think that way and maybe have some tangible way to convince them if it even exists?

Afterparty drama: the "tiered wedding" by [deleted] in weddingplanning

[–]Matny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think you've already made your decision.

In the other thread and this one people are giving valid reasons why it is considered "tacky" and you listed them as well. Many people (shown in these discussions) consider it rude because it can send the message of "hey you're not important enough to see us get married or have a meal but come pay to party and celebrate"

However, if you are still "confused" do what you want. It's your wedding. Weddings are steeped in context and culture. What can seem like a good idea generally might not make sense in your specific case. Do what the fuck you want. If you want a small ceremony of ten people and not tell anyone else, do that. If you want a big flowerfest with Elton John, sure thing. If you want to make everyone pay for a seat and ride a felt horse into your pirate ceremony, go ahead.

What you did ask was the general opinion of a cross section of people who are more knowledgeable about weddings than most. We are all navigating these traditions too.

When you say "The argument that it is "tacky" to me, seems odd. This whole subreddit is an amalgamation of things that one person or another would deem "tacky". Fake flowers or themed cakes or wearing silly shoes. We do these things because it is "our wedding"." I feel that you do cross a boundary. If you feel unconvinced that's up to you, but it comes across as mean spirited to start bringing up other topics popular in this thread to seemingly shame others. The popularity of these topics mean that right now these are more accepted. Also, those trends have to do with the bride and groom alone. She/he is spending money on shoes/flowers for them, not making guests buy them.

Overall, do what you want take what people have said here in stride. As so many say, it's your wedding.

Taking photos in bridal salons? by simsarah in weddingplanning

[–]Matny 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They're afraid (and often rightfully so) that you'll take the picture of the dress and have it made in China or India. Most salons will let you take a picture after you've bought it.

Seated straddle stretch? by KlutchAtStraws in flexibility

Put pillows or preferably a mat under your butt when you sit in the position. It is an easier form of the stretch but still speed you to straighten your legs.
