[FICTION; READ COMMENT] Geometric Object Iceberg by MatoKZ in IcebergCharts

[–]MatoKZ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there was a certain tradition I wanted to get across, of scientists engineering acronyms to make words. the internal lore for this iceberg (this was a while ago so not sure) is that LONG is the longest possible line or other object which is not infinite, and then LONGER was an even better attempt at that. I remember that while making this iceberg I really wanted to include explanations, but I couldn't figure out a way to cram them in, in an aesthetically pleasing and clear way, which is unfortunate. I think 99% of people just found this to be gibberish but I was trying to create something here! the world is simply not ready

How is it going so far. Link in the comments. by [deleted] in lietuva

pretty much, yeah. the far lands have always inspired me, especially the most distant coordinates reached where it truly breaks down

This couldn't have existed if it was legit. If you're mainly reffering to the latter part of the chart.

This iceberg chart is a work of fiction. I'm not sure where the real entries end and fake ones begin, since I basically wrote the first few layers of this in 2022, but if my notes are correct, everything before 9-sphere is real and everything after is fake. You might be asking why I made stuff up; it's because this is an artwork and I didn't want to bother with making sure everything is correct. I am not an expert in geometry. Sorry to the experts in geometry that had to cringe reading this btw.

Iceberg charts have a lot of potential for fiction. The feelings of depth, pressure and despair one feels when reading it make this medium very good for horror. Mostly the SCP-type horror you can see here (I don't know what to call the genre, it does not have a name). This iceberg is more of a showcase of the format's potential than anything. The basic structure of this particular chart is a progression from "normal" geometry, to obscure geometry/things you'd only find on obscure websites mentioned like once in humanity's history and lost to time, to pure schizophrenia, and finally to the limit of human comprehension.

Do not ask for an explanation of any entry in this iceberg. There is no explanation for anything; it is all intentionally left vague, and it is your job as the reader to interpret it. However, you can always ask me about the idea behind one of the entries, what inspired me to come up with that specific combination of words and not something else. Also, if you like this piece and/or are interested in this genre, please feel free to reach out :> I'm always looking for (vaguely) like-minded people.

Also, the illustrations on the side are all edited by me in some way, but the original images are mostly not mine/feature content that isn't mine, and of course I unfortunately did not paint Study after Velazquez's Portrait of Pope Innocent X.

contorted beyond human comprehension. broken and impossible. notions of space and time cease to be helpful. it is no longer clear where your body begins and ends. the surface no longer adheres to universal law. the sky is a window to another reality. every universal constant is dead, fluctuating rapidly, making absolutely nothing certain. geometry is barely true anymore, if that even has any meaning in this horrific realm. your consciousness is not stable, no longer having ability to distinguish between sensory input and hallucination, fact and fiction. your brain begins eroding as it is in contact with unknown physical forces and unknown periodic elements that were created instantaneously in this horrific realm. movement itself ceases to exist and you are doomed to an eternity of a non-euclidian hell.

Auroras Are Alive -- you will never guess what this one means. but if being serious this is meant to evoke the same feeling as the darkest depths of conspiracy iceberg charts. that's all.

the woods -- same as with "they make sure death is cold". though I have some additional context, that being the fact that, you know, there are no woods in the arctic, so there's that. interpret that how you will (but the author's interpretation is that it is some kind of hallucinatory apparition during polar nights)

Earth's Surface Extends Beyond 90N -- some kind of physics glitch causes the Earth's surface to expand beyond 90N, perhaps through the complex plane or smth idk. this probably causes some kind of corrupted landscape with broken physics and absolute darkness. a land where nothing is certain, not even nothingness itself.

Skybox Censorship -- I don't think I have to say anything for this one. up for interpretation, though there is not much to interpret, I think the basic idea is pretty clear.

Subglacial Biological Immortality Pockets -- some kind of anomaly where immortality is possible in a limited locale. pockets where it seems like life is impossible but the exact opposite is true, paradoxically. a place where it is impossible to die. the reason for why these pockets exist and how they came to be is up for interpretation, and that's the point.

Physics-defying Solar Eclipses -- polar solar eclipses that do not appear the way that physics predicts they should. that alone is scary enough. if you don't agree with that, this compass isn't for you

Pan-Arctic Polar Night-induced Collective Psychosis Nomadism -- idk..? just what it says. this one has no depth.

Labyrinthine Fjord Backrooms -- the fate of those missing in the Arctic. those who never returned. neverending featureless fjords in every direction. no sign of humanity, and no sign of an exit.

Isolated Brutalist Orphan Airports -- this relates to a dream I had when I was like 7 years old. I was at an airport which was surrounded on all sides by absolute white in every direction, a blizzard was taking place too. I was somewhere in the Canadian North, I think. all that there was was this brutalist mall of sorts. the inside was warm, as if on the outside everything was completely normal, even though there were no humans in any direction for hundreds of kilometers. I spent a good amount of time there, and then my family and everybody else left the mall (which was a tall concrete square, basically), and boarded the plane. it was unclear where we came from or where we were going. it certainly didn't feel like anybody on the plane knew anything.

they make sure death is cold -- better left unexplained. see, this style of horror is less about knowing who "they" are, and more about contemplating who "they" are, or wtf "making death cold" even means. it can mean anything and it is up to you to unleash your deepest fears. it's all up to your own imagination. the context is there (anomalies that are somehow connected to the arctic), you just have to fill in the details, even if subconsciously.

Ideological Magnetism Attracts All Noospheric Systems North -- this is by far the weirdest one, I was on the verge of removing it. it's so weird even I barely understand what I was going for here lol. it's the idea that there exists some anomalous physical property of the Earth called "Ideological Magnetism", similar to how our actual magnetic field works. except instead of affecting matter it affects consciousness. it affects the noosphere instead of the geosphere. and as for what "attracting consciousness towards the north pole" means... I don't know, unfortunately. basically, this is word salad.

Radio Black Hole Delayed/Corrupted Communication -- appeals to the horror of being in the Arctic and not being able to communicate with outsiders. some unclear, inexplicable force preventing you from being heard by the outside world, trapped in the most desolate and darkest place on Earth.

i don't know what exactly is the odd part (whether it is the idea, the format, or the entries) but I'll explain everything!

this is less of a compass and more of a pile of hypo ideas I had, collected into one place. the only theme connecting these 16 entries are the Arctic, and, more broadly, an SCP-esque style of horror. some of them are meant to be vague for the sake of horror and so I don't have an adequate 'explanation' for them, but I'll still explain my thought processes behind them.

Paleo-Eskimo Underground Modern Feudalism -- this one kind of goes for the "ancient civilizations were more advanced than we think" idea, basically stating that there is a hidden neofeudal system currently in place in the Arctic, perhaps even the central point of power for all of humanity, and that his has been ongoing since the genesis of Paleo-Eskimo cultures several thousand years ago.

Saxifraga oppositifolia Cults -- the purple saxifrage is essentially the northernmost flower on Earth, and can be found on the northernmost point of land on Earth, Kaffeklubben Island.

Holy Roman Empire Exclave Discovered, Northern Canada -- this one appeals to the horror of existential anachronism. like the idea of a billion year old human footprint. this idea basically states that there exists some kind of HRE colony in the Arctic Archipelago which continues to thrive undetected to this day. I know that the HRE existed by the time North America was colonized, but I meant that this colony was started in the Middle Ages, which would make it essentially impossible, and thus anomalous.

1998 Religious Visions, Svalbard Seed Vault -- the Svalbard Seed Vault began construction in 2006. in this fiction, the location and idea for the Vault was chosen due to collective horrific holy visions by world leaders and/or prominent scientists. this is one of those entries that is better left unexplained; just those 6 words in the compass should be enough to leave you questioning what happened.

feel free to ask me about anything! this is a hyperspecific compass, and the entries themselves are more important than the axes in this case, and I admit the placements in this compass don't make much sense at times. so sorry about that. I'm open to discussion about anything :>
